When it comes to video games I am obsessive-compulsive about beating them. If I start a game I must finish it. No matter how bad, or how hard it is I will not rest until the ending credits have rolled across the screen. Like Bruce Hornsby says ... that's just the way it is!

Where do dragons work? (My new work office)
SilverDragon1979 | 9:46 AM on 08.20.2008 23 comments

Most of you don’t know what I do for a living, so let me give you a brief description. I’m an electrical engineer who works for a high performance analog company as an IC Designer in the field of notebook computer power electronics. In other words, I design microchips that regulate power to Intel and AMD Notebook CPUs. In even simpler terms, I make your computer work. If you are still confused don’t worry, because I have never found a good way to describe what I do to people.

So just recently I have gotten a lot more responsibility at work, and with this new responsibility has come a completely new office and computer setup. I was so blown away by it all that I wanted to share it with you, because it’s pretty incredible. As you can see from the pictures below I am now running 2 different computers, with a total of 3 20” LCD monitors. One computer is a Dell Windows laptop that displays using a 20” 4:3 LCD monitor. The other computer is a super-powerful Dell Linux Box that requires me to use 2 20” 16:9 widescreen monitors side by side.

As you can see from these images I am literally surrounded by monitors. I can turn my head almost 120 degrees and see monitor. It’s absolutely crazy.

Well I just wanted to share my new office and computer setup with you all. Hope you enjoy the pictures.

So you should be the guy I curse to the bowels of Hell when my computer is not working??

Today isn't a total loss after all.

Also Tarheel #1. Learn to live with that.

I've always been torn when it comes to office space. In my previous job I almost ended up with a shiny new office to myself instead of sharing with a couple of people but then some asshole manager decided he wanted it for the 3 days a month he was on site.

This was probably for the best though because I already spent half my day arsing around playing games and browsing the web (the general lack of computer literacy among my colleagues led them to think jobs that took me 45 mins constituted several hours of work). The lack of any direct supervision/monitoring I enjoyed coupled with a newfound insulation from the rest of the building would have, I fear, been too much for my meager willpower and I would have been sacked for doing even less.

3 monitors? Do you really need that many? Sorry, that's just my jealousy speaking. Enjoy your 120 degrees of awesomeness.

The real highlight of the office is that couch, though. When I have a couch in my office, that's when I'll know that I've become something.

Dude you need to rig up Forza 2 with some xbox's in that office, it's the only logical option. But also, that is an awesome office.

@Yojimbo: I can't believe you just wrote in your comment "Tarheel #1. Learn to live with that." You are truly dead to me now.

Heh, thats pretty sweet. I had a dream of having my own office until I found out they have these things called cubicles. Then I discovered what I have now which is a glorified cubicle called a "workspace."

Yeah I do hardware only, no software at all. I have designed at the system level, but now I'm designing at the silicon level.

So what? I have 30 calculators just like yours in my "office." And I have an LCD projector and a SMARTboard. Oh, and rulers. Lots and lots of rulers. Do you have any rulers?

Seriously, nice office and monitorage.

Starting salary fresh out of college with just a Bachelors degree can be anywhere between $50k and $70k. If you have a Masters that can be bumped up to between $60k and $80k.
