I think it’s pretty safe to say that Mikey has impressed us all with his incredible drawing skillz. Time and time again his video game/Destructoid inspired drawings have amazed us all, and I’m sure we have all at one point wished that he would draw something personally just for us. Well a couple of months back I decided that I needed a new blog header, something that had more of a Destructoid theme to it. The first person that came to my mind was Mikey, and I knew I needed to procure his ultimate drawing skillz somehow. I began by sending him an email with a description of the blog header I envisioned, to see if he would even be interested in doing it. This is what my description said:
”I would like an image of the Descructoid robot fighting the ultimate battle to the death with a huge silver dragon. The battle needs to take place in a volcanic, magma filled cave, with fire everywhere. It would be great if the dragon could be breathing a huge line of fire at the Destructoid robot.”
I didn’t know if Mikey would be interested in helping me, but I could only keep my fingers crossed and hope that he would come to be aid. Well luckily for me, he decided that he would create my drawing, and after negotiating a fair price for his services, he was on the job. He began by sending me two rough draft images which I’ve shown below. One was a more panoramic image of the fearsome battle, while the other was a closer, more intimate image of the battle. I decided I liked the zoomed in version better. Once I had chosen on which general direction I wanted the image to go in, Mikey came up with a more detailed version. It’s in this image where you could see his artistic genius begin to show through. At his request, I had sent Mikey a couple different images of dragons which he could the use to finalize the look of the silver dragon. If you can’t tell I am a huge dragon fan, so I was expecting to be pretty picky about the way the dragon looked. I wasn’t sure if Mikey would be able to nail it or not. When I saw this image though, I knew I shouldn’t have questioned his ability. His illustration was spot on what I was thinking the dragon should look like.
Once I approved this image Mikey disappeared for a while. I’m going to assume he spent all this time toiling over my image, trying to get it perfect before he delivered the final product to me. In reality his life just got really busy and he had other more important things to tend too, but I like to think he spent all that time just on my image alone. Finally, this week Mikey delivered the first colored sketch. It was INREDIBLE!!!
I honestly couldn’t believe how good the final product was. It surpassed even my own wildly crazy expectations, and trust me I had quite high expectations. All that was left was to add in the title text, and Mikey even did that was a little style, placing it over the fire at the bottom of the image, with a cool silver glossy text. The final image can be seen below, or can be seen as the new blogger already posted at the top of my blog.
I would just like to end this by thanking Mikey for creating my new incredibly awesome blog header. I am extremely grateful, and I hope that he is able to put this talent to good use to become wildly successful. With so much talent, it would be a real shame to waste it. Thanks again Mikey. You are THE MAN!!!
