When it comes to video games I am obsessive-compulsive about beating them. If I start a game I must finish it. No matter how bad, or how hard it is I will not rest until the ending credits have rolled across the screen. Like Bruce Hornsby says ... that's just the way it is!

I can’t take it anymore! Hollywood wants to destroy every childhood memory I hold dear, by remaking all of my favorite cartoons into horrible movies. They already took Transformers and made into the laughing stock of the cinema community. From what I can tell, they plan on doing the same thing with G.I. Joe in a couple of months. They even have plans to bring Voltron to the big screen, which I’m sure can only turn out horribly bad. Now though, they have gone too far, because today it was announced Hollywood would be remaking The Secret of Nimh.

I read this story today as I was perusing through IO9.com and I immediately threw up a little bit in my mouth. I don’t know about the rest of you, but “The Secret of Nimh” holds a very special place in my heart. I consider it to be one of the classic animated movies of all time, created from one of the most classic children’s novels of all time. I mean they just don’t make movies anymore like this. It was dark, gritty, and edgy, yet humorous and light hearted all at the same time. It had very memorable great characters, including evil villains, old mystical wizards, a clumsy crow, and some of the most adorable mice you’ve ever seen. The whole movie was blanketed in a cloud of mysticism that really set the tone for the entire thing, especially the end. They just do not make children’s movies like this anymore. Hell, they don’t even make adult movies like this anymore.

Now Hollywood wants to take this classic movie and remake it in a CGI shit fest. Now look, you might think I’m going to far by saying this. I mean after all I haven’t seen a single second of footage yet, so I could be totally wrong. Trust me I’m not wrong. Read this quote from the makers of the new film.

“It's likely the new "NIMH" would combine live-action and animation in the manner of "Alvin & the Chipmunks" and other kiddie hybrids.”

Did any of you see the Alvin and the Chipmunks movie? It was absolutely horrible. That’s another childhood cartoon I watched, and used to love until Hollywood went and ruined it. If they are trying to relate the new Secret of Nimh movie to the before mentioned Alvin and the Chipmunks movie, it can ONLY be a bad thing. I just have to many examples that prove Hollywood does not know how to take cartoons and turn them into movie. Maybe the problem is that cartoons just don’t translate well into movies anyways, but that’s a discussion for another time I think.

Hollywood is completely out of ideas right now, so they are scraping every last cent off the bottom of the barrel by taking my childhood cartoons and turning them into movies. Now they want to take a classic like The Secret of Nimh and remake it as well, most likely destroying it in the process. I just can’t take it anymore. FUCK YOU HOLLYWOOD!!!!

All I can do now is watch this trailer from the original movie, to remind myself of a time when 2D animated movies ruled the world.

I'm a big fan of Don Bluth movies, so this remake will inevitably suck.
Ruin it? Don't you know CGI makes everything better? We're not in the 1930's anymore. Not everything has to be made in some ugly hand-drawn 2D abortion.
Ah, I heard this earlier today too. It made me want to run out and get the movie again so I can soak up the win before the fail is released.
Could be great, could be terrible, but no matter what we'll always have the original. Ah, good terrifying times.

Also, Rockadoodledoo...anyone remember that?
Even if it turns out palatable (which I rather doubt), there's no way in heck it's going to stand up to the original...I really wish they'd leave well enough alone over there in Hollywood.
Actually, this is supposed to be closer to the book, which didn't have any of the magic and mysticism of the film. Don Bluth added those to the movie because fantasy was the hot thing at the time.
Also, the combination of animation and live action wasn't the reason that Alvin and the Chipmunks sucked. It could have been animated by Miyazaki and it still would have been a massive turd.
Are you serious?? Secret of NIMH was awesome. Damn, I love that film. Remaking it is pointless.

Hey at least we have the traditionally animated Princess and the Frog to look forward to, right? I for one am excited for it.
And while I'm here, I might was well say that yes, Nukka Jdav I remember Rock-A-Doodle: it was a terrible, terrible movie.
I just bought the DVD online last month and watched it again for the first time in 14 or so years. Still really good, but IMO some parts seemed a little rushed.

What is with the movie industry taking all these animated movies/TV shows and turning them into live action anyways? Cowboy Bebop, Ghost In The Shell, and Akira are supposed to be getting redone in live action. Perhaps "old school" vs CGI animation will become our generations' black & white vs colored film versions.
To be fair, as Shipero pointed out, it's fair to say that "The Secret of NIMH" was a massive abortion of an adaptation as far as faithfulness to the original source due to the whole mystical vibe that Don Bluth and his team added into the movie that was totally not in the books. That being said, I will admit that I personally much preferred the movie to the book and I liked the mystic aspect of the film because, from a mouse's point of view, surely anything technology-related would seem to be mystical and magical.

There's an optimistic part of me that feels that there is room for a more literal adaptation of the book. I personally would not be bothered by the CGI/live-action idea seeing as there are very little humans in the book and given today's film climate, I can't see this being done hand-animated as opposed to CGI animated. That being said, there's a part of me that is very suspicious as to whether or not this film could do the story justice, whether it decides to move closer to the source or farther as with the animated film.

Lastly, the score to "The Secret of NIMH" is one of the most beautiful scores ever written. I can't really imagine a score for a remake that could possibly even approach what Jerry Goldsmith did with the score to the animated film.
@shipero

Really!?!?!? I ate that shit up when I was a kid.
Don Bluth was always Disney Jr (which is ironic, because he used to work for Disney). While he had a few hits, most of his movies were way too oddball/poor to make it mainstream.

I did like Nimh, All Dogs Go to Heaven, and a few others though.
I can't wait for the crappy tie-in game c/o THQ with 1000 gamerscore obtainable in an hour or less. Thanks, Hollywood remake culture!
I wish they would stop and think that just because you can do something doesn't mean you should.
