Normally, a game is either rated as Overrated(usually the more mainstream ones) or Underrated (the lesser known games) by gamers. A game or game series is either labelled as one of those two, and maybe some might say it's deserving of it's popularity. No one will ever call Halo or Half Life underrated. But Dynasty Warriors seems to fall somewhere in between.
Dynasty Warriors is a franchise as popular as Final Fantasy and Resident evil in Japan, while doing badly in sales in America, and being constantly bashed on by game critics. Those who see Dynasty Warriors getting praised say that the series is overrated and doesn't deserve to be treated as a "work of art" (from one of the comments on this site) while those who read the bad reviews for the games say that the series is underrated and that they're one of the few people who likes it.
So in general, the series seems to be the one to receive the most mixed reaction. Hate it or love it, what are your opinions on the popularity of the series? Does it deserve more recognition or is it too popular for a game of its kind?
It's not underrated. The reason it does so poorly is because there's a new one ever other month, with no new gameplay elements, minimal new characters, and pretty much no graphics updates. It's that we're bored of Samurai Dynasty Warrior of Blades of Glorified Death.
Oh, that and a game should require you hit more than just the X button.
It's not either. Not enough people like it for it to be considered overrated and not enough people dislike it for it to be considered underrated. Most people just don't care anymore. It was impressive the first time around, but after you played the first couple Dynasty Warriors you've pretty much played them all. They get repetitive quickly and then it just turns to plain old boredom.
No one really talks about the game seriously so it can't be overrated and its not underrated since theres been a slew of DW games. They do get boring after you play 3 or more DW games but if you take a break from them its kind of fun again to go and slaughter 600 troops like they were matchstick men.
Neither. Considering I could get the same experience just watching the History Channel and pressing the a button on my controller, I'll take either or.
people will say it's just button mashing, others will say it changes as time goes. But really, just don't worry about others words.
This just goes back to not listening to reviewers or others and just liking whatever your mind says it likes. I love the DW/SW series even though most will just say it's button mashing. Granted after DW3, the game has changed a lot more as they've gone in. But most casual players probably wouldn't notice or care. But again, this game is just a love or hate thing.
They are switching up the "DW" formula a bit with titles like Bladestorm, Dynasty Warriors Gundam, Circle of doom, etc... But I guess all of that is just an acquired taste. Some people say cucumbers taste better pickled.
@Heretic: You might not believe it, but I remember there was a comment on this site where someone complained that Dynasty Warriors was overrated and treated as a "work of art" by people.
This isn't about me listening to people or reviewers to decide if it's good or not. I'm just interested in people's opinion on this because it seems DW is one of those few series that have been said to be both overrated and underrated.
As for me, I love the series but do buy only few of the games. What I don't understand is thatpeople said you can simply mash one button to beat the game. I've tried that, and believe me, you're going to die so fast on higher difficulties.

Dynasty Warriors is rated where it needs to be:
A tired, worthless A button masher
