It's A Crime Not To Have 2 Controllers in a System Now.
Shin Oni | 11:30 AM on 06.19.2008 13 comments

Controllers. It's what we need to play games...an alternative (and bad for FPS...) to PC gaming keyboard elitist. Quite simply a remote for said little white systems that could. In the end, they're controllers. It's a question that has probably crossed your mind and a question I hear quite alot lately on the salesfloor at Best Buy. Never are 2 controllers bundled with a system by default. We're forced to pay money that we'd still be paying if we bought it together. Many ask, Why?

In this day and age, as Video Games continue to grow ever so popular with us young/teen/tadult/adult/obese players, this should be a standard practice. I shouldn't have to wait till christmas and hope for a Christmas only special bundle packaged with 1 "meh" game and 2 new controllers". Christmas would be the perfect time for such a thing....but so would year round. Online gaming may be the big thing in the future, but gamers still have company over their house or a bro/sis who want to play a game with you. Lets look at Microsoft and their XBLA bit. Most of these games are old school games...some of are new school. Majority of these games can be 2-4 players (3 if we're talking the new capcom game they released last week.) Some have the option to play with others online but that option for a split screen 2 player gaming is still there. Seeing parents KNOW most of the time whoever the system's for, they'll have friends over. Not everyone goes out and buys said system, head to a friends house on a regular, and bring a controller. Especially if said friend can play the same game from home, online, no moving his lazy ass anywhere but to the couch. The only current system not really exempt from this is the Wii as everyone and their grandmama's mama have it or want it. (or went out and bought a remote...hoping games were on the remote.) Seeing this system is a big home multiplayer grabber to begin with, parents already know to grab at least 3 extra remotes and maybe nunchucks. If Nintendo was smart, they would've bundled 4 Wiimotes/Nunchucks to go along with the system. They know it's hot. They know people will buy it anyway because it's hot, parents love it, and cause it prints money. Paying a few extra bucks along with the system doesn't kill anyone.

Wasn't expectin that controller were you?

something told me to write more. But I figure I can break this into parts.

Paying a few extra bucks along with the system doesn't kill anyone.

You just killed your whole argument with that final sentence. If it won't kill you to pay more for a bundle with two controllers, what's the big deal about just buying a second one?

These companies just want to milk you for as much money as possible, so why would they not force you to hand over more money?

Are you showing me the Saturn controller just because you already know that I needed to round up six of them whenever my pals and I wanted to sit down and play Guardian Heroes?

Are you making fun of me and all my friends?

Your argument was blown when you got your first achievement in Rumble Roses.

2nd controller is omitted to meet price points.

fuckin wiimote + nunchuck is $80. thats 1/3 the total cost of the wii. it would be $330 if it came w/ 2 controllers, which puts them at the same price point as 360/ps3.

360 controllers are roughly 60. ps3 too. you do the math.

I had friends who bought controllers just so they could come to my house and play.

The controller was what they could afford, not the console.

@GalagaBug

Wiimote is $40 plus the $20 nunchuck so it's $60 total.

The point is, it doesn't cost $60 to make a wiimote and a nunchuck. I know the 360 controller costs less than $20 to produce. So including an extra in with the system isn't going to break Microsoft's bank.

I think it's ridiculous that we're forced to pay for an extra controller, especially when there's a lot of focus on Multiplayer games these days.

Galagabug, a Wiimote + Nunchuck is $60, just like the 360 & PS3 controllers. I agree it doesn't make business sense to include them- it blows the price point all to hell.

Console makers sure know how to piece everything apart. It used to be a system always included video cables, not always true today. Maybe they're "learning" from watching some of the peeps on eBay who are pretty much taking a donated system, (prob something they've gotten for free) and selling each and every part separately on eBay.

We had a similar discussion with Sony's decision not to include HDMI cables. They pinch pennies in the most annoying ways.

ah yes. the PS3/HDMI fiasco. It still pisses me off and amazes me everytime I pass that silly demo on the PS3 kiosk, they boast about the HDMI/1080p feature, yet don't even give you the kindness to have at least Component cables.

I too miss the days when we used to get two controllers with a console. It was Sony who started this trend of packaging one controller and its stuck.

Such a shame, as those extra controllers could help get more customers into gaming.
