When I heard Weezer's video for their new single "Pork and Beans" would feature various YouTube "celebrities," I was worried. The band has gotten a little lame and gimmicky, in recent years. Would this be the nail in the coffin?
NO. IT'S FUCKING AWESOME. It's like the "Buddy Holly" video, only, like, internetty. Watch it. It's AMAZING. I'm really impressed with how successfully they managed to merge the band with the memes, and it's actually a fun, enjoyable video. Kudos, Weezer. Perhaps Failsville is a little further off than I thought. Make sure you watch the whole thing, as it doesn't really become worthwhile until the first chorus, much like the song itself.
Also, if you're upset about the inclusion of Chris Crocker, stick with it. There's a nice payoff.
That's pretty awesome, actually. I saw Chris Crocker and though, "Oh great..." But it was nice to see the inclusion of some of others, like the Daft girls, Ryan v.s. Dorkman, and Ms. What's-her-name with a map deficiency. I saw Charlie the Unicorn in there too.
@Nihon
I don't know. Their last few videos have been pretty shitty. I'm glad they seem to've reacquired their charm and wit, if only in video form. The band used to be quite hilarious and amazing, on video.
I still like the idea that Feeder had with their video Just A Day. Having a fan compilation as their official music video, it was the funniest thing ever!
If I recall, Weezer going downhill musically is intentional, coz' Rivers didn't want the stresses of putting personal effort into the music. Basically he got all emo butthurt after Pinkerton didn't sell incredible, which is why they didn't release anything for years after, and it's gone a different route since.
Still tolerable I guess though, video is put together pretty nice. I haven't seen any music vidja's in years though.
@Wedge
Not really. During the Green Album era, Rivers stuck to making shallow pop songs, simply because they would be popular and "mainstream." However, he slowly started moving away from that, then around 2003 or so, he got into some Eastern meditation hoodoo, and now he's back to writing more personal lyrics. Unfortunately, his inner vocabulary is currently at the Jr. High level.
Also, Rivers' mustache is amazing. Don't lie.
@bbrigg1
GET OUT. You do not insult Tanya Byron in my house.
@nintendoll:
I was actually listening to Just a Day as I was re-reading this thread! I think I might have entered that contest for the video back in the day but I didn't make the cut..... probably something to do with the fact that I was naked and chasing a chicken....probably.
@Sharpless:
I thought Rivers was dumbing down Weezers music a bit because he didn't like the way the record label was telling him what and how to write songs or maybe that was just how the name "Pork and Beans" came about.
Either way I'm glad Weezer are back after the disappointing Make Believe and the indefinite hiatus (I know they always go on hiatus but still...) and for a Harvard student why's Rivers vocabulary lacking so much?
@nintendoll
Well, keep talking to me and eventually you'll have a PHD in Weezology. :) I've been a fan since 2000. Definitely the most influential band for me.
@Anus Mcphanus
Well, I know he wrote the song about the record label's meddling. I don't think he dumbed the lyrics down for it though, since all the songs on Make Believe and (as far as I can tell) the Red Album are of the same style. I can't imagine what happened to him. I'm sure his current whiny voice doesn't help any.
Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. I miss the old days.
Yes! It Blends!
Yeah, Rivers has kind of lost his ability to write awesome lyrics, but I can forgive the little guy.

I almost didn't recognize Rivers with that tache.
I <3 Weezer
Apart from that i pretty much agree with Rockvillain.
South Park did this better.
also, good video.
What's the deal with the old ugly chick at the bottom of your profile?

But it's an ironic mustache! It's funny! Ha!
Actually, I don't think it's meant to be ironic. I think it's the result of a combination of his rock'n'roll training and his hippy training.
