[Editor's note: Sharpless takes a look at Team Fortress 2 and tells us how he would improve it as part of this month's Monthly Musing. -- CTZ]
In many ways, Team Fortress 2 is kind of the bastard child of The Orange Box. Half-Life 2 and its sequels are regarded as being innovative and quite legendary, and Portal is every games-are-art indief*ck's favorite squeeze toy. TF2, while respected and well-liked, is the immature, rebellious sibling. It has nothing quasi-revolutionary to add to the gaming world, and it has no immersive narrative to draw people into it.
That said, I bloody love this game. Halo 3 can choke on the bile of its racist 12-year-olds, Gears of War can suffocate under a hulking mass of CliffyB's hair gel, and CoD4 can just flat-out lick my love pump. While I enjoy all those games, I would much rather spend my time back-stabbing your Snipers, sniping your turrets, and listening to the Heavy laugh psychotically whilst mowing your team down in a hail of hot lead. I love the chaotic-yet-skillful, class-based gameplay and the colorful, endearing characters.
But would I change anything? Yes. Yes, I would. No game is truly perfect, and TF2 could definitely use an Engineer to tighten its screws. And I'm also generally critical as hell, so I'm sure I can come up with a shortlist of changes that would make it slightly more awesome, which you can read about after the jump.
Character Customization Okay, now, believe me, I'm more than satisfied with the nine brilliant, hilarious characters Valve has already crammed into this game. But wouldn't it be nice if you could tweak your characters just a little bit? Put a bowtie on the Spy, maybe give him a pipe instead of a cigarette? Perhaps you'd like to put one of those plaid, winged lumberjack hats on the Heavy. It's not necessary, but it's small and fun, something Valve would excel at.
Taking it one step further, how about gender? As you can see in the above fan-made image, a female cast is not that ridiculous of a notion. It would certainly make the female-type fans happy, as well as generally adding some always-welcome variety to the mix. And who wouldn't like to see the Heavy find his soulmate (other than the Medic, that is)?
Another possible avenue of customization is weaponry. Choosing whether your Scout carries a bat or, perhaps, a crowbar (wink, wink) could add yet another fun dimension to the game. Of course, to a degree, Valve has started rolling this out for PC players, with the new additions to the Medic's arsenal. If only they would make that class-specific loadout menu more robust and add it to the console version. Speaking of which ...
Better Console Support Yeah, yeah, yeah, Valve is a PC company. I get it. I don't deny that that's their niche and they work it really well. However, I am not a PC gaming fan - at least not when it comes to FPSes. Cry me a river. Anyway, it comes as no surprise that Valve is being quite efficient at releasing patches and adding new, fun content to TF2's PC version. The console versions, however? They've seen none of the content, with little hope of it ever arriving. So, what am I proposing?
ANYTHING. New maps, new gametypes, new weapons -- hell, even new boots for the Pyro would be welcomed. If Microsoft or Sony insist on charging for it, I'll bend over and take it like a fanboy. Hear me? Yes, I will let you microtransrape me. And I'm certain that Valve could add these things to the consoles just as easily as to the PC, barring MS and Sony's inevitable meddling. If Bungie can do it with
Halo, then the infinitely more-awesome Valve can do it too.
Frankly, while playing
TF2 on a console is still fun, it's kind of like playing in a cage. A not-as-fun-as-PC cage. Go play
TF2 on a console. Chances are, you'll never once see a single person on your friend list playing it, unless you happened to have met them while playing the game. I'm not suggesting that the PC players shouldn't be shown some favoritism, but it would be nice if, as a console
TF2 player, I didn't feel like Valve's red-headed stepchild.
More, and More-Versatile, Maps I'm pretty sure that most people out there will agree with me when I say that
Team Fortress 2 doesn't have nearly enough maps to choose from. The maps it does have are great, but the seven (technically, eight) maps do tend to grow somewhat old over time. (Admittedly, to their credit, they don't grow nearly as old as most maps in certain other, more popular shooters do.) Starting with a minimum of ten, and releasing additional maps as time goes on, seems like a good plan to me.
Another problem with the game's seven unique maps is that only one of them can be used for more than one gametype. For example, 2Fort is only capable of being a CTF map, while Hydro is only for Territory Control. I can see the benefits to building a map specifically for a certain gametype, but it greatly limits both the map's usefulness and the game's potential. By allowing some flexibility, fans could come up with some surprisingly fun map/gametype combos.
And while we're at it, why not drop in a dumbed-down version of Garry's Mod for the console players, while you're at it? Perhaps something more akin to
Halo 3's "Forge" map editor, where players can move certain elements around and create maps that look almost nothing like their original layout. Not essential, but an interesting thought. And yes, I know that Garry's Mod is superior. Go lie down in a volcano.
Split-screen Multiplayer Lastly, one issue that's often come up for me is the lack of split-screen. Of course, I realize that one-on-one games are thoroughly boring and virtually useless. However, I can't count the number of times I've been playing
Halo 3 online with my friend beside me, and I've gotten the urge to fire up some
Team Fortress 2, only to remember, "Oh, that's right.
We can't." Allowing for two players would definitely boost the playability, as I'm sure I'm not alone on this one.
So, there you have it. That's probably not an extensive list of things that many people would consider issues, but it's more or less everything that bothers me. Sure, I'd like more spawn points, so I didn't have to walk all the way across Dustbowl to get back to the second control point, but that's all part of the game. Constructive criticism is one thing, but bitching is anoth ...
Oh, sorry. I forgot that I was on the Internet for a second. Some logic slipped out. Won't happen again. Anyway, how would you improve your
TF2 experience, be it on a console or on a PC?
If Valve could manage to include some of these in a patch or even an add-on pack I would definitely pay for it. Any incentive for me to get the Orange Box disc spinning in my 360 is well worth the price of admission for me. I just don't want it to be released and have it splinter the already small fanbase on the consoles.
Good point with the customization. Other than the new weapons, I'd also like to see some straight up cosmetic stuff done, although female model would lead to some extremely disturbing Gary's mod shenanigans and whatnot :D
The Character customization and female versions of the current characters would be fun though. I could be down for that :D
Heck, if someone (anyone!) could get around to patching half of the big ole problems with the PS3 version, I'd be thrilled.
Though if I had only one wish it would be... er... for more of the character videos. Hot dang those are excellent.
Do you guys have Badlands and Goldrush yet? Badlands is better than granary and well, imo, and Goldrush is just plain awesome.
If there was anything else i would change for you guys, it would be more people. 8v8 is allright, but 12v12 is fantastic, and most of the maps seemed to be designed for those numbers.
I'd love to, dude. I actually own the PC version, but all I have is my laptop, which can't run it. Sad face. :( Can't afford a good desktop for a while, either.
@Wexx
Well, I can't exactly write from a PC gaming perspective, can I? I admit it's not a very extensive list, but if I included any more changes, I'd be entering tl;dr territory.
Also, could this please go on the front page, just so the pictures won't look out-of-sync with the text? I'm really OCD about that. Thanks. (Damn new 468-wide format!)
As far as I'm concerned, the only kind of in-game modding that I would consider legit in TF2 would be homemade maps. For the most part, I think these things should be made more accessible for the masses. I applaud those who can manipulate code or craft amazing mods, but that's a tiny, tiny fraction of the population. Gaming isn't an elitist club, and suckers like me want to join in, too.
apart from that, yeah I agree tf2 could use some more things especially!! customization & female character options. Ive been saying that crap since the days of tfc, since there wasnt really much we could customize in the ways of character models in the days of qwtf :D.
Don't let these sites with specs for "monster systems" fool you - overpriced monster systems are for people who don't know the difference between paying for the brand, and paying for good hardware :P. Consult your local, humble nerd for more info!
I understand what he's talking about. That stuff is still over a lot of people's heads, and I'd like to see Valve do something official with customization. I'm not suggesting they remove modding or anything, just that they give the mod-impaired something to play with.
@Rockvillian
I plan on building my next computer, with the help of a friend. I know I don't need a monster PC, and I would never spend that kind of money on one, even if I did. I do plan on getting the best video card I can afford, though. I'm sick of being stuck with crappy ones.
I'd make it better by removing the team aspect, adding red armor, a proper rocket launcher, a railgun and quad damage. AND A HOOK.
Gratz on the promotion Sharpless, <3!
Don't forget the little people when you become all big and famous!
I definitely agree, the 360 lobby system is glitchy. Sometimes it reaches a point where it refuses to find any games for me. I have to back out to the main Orange Box menu and restart TF2. The gist of this post is that the console port of TF2 is basically shit, in comparison to the PC.
And yes, for the record, let me state this more clearly to any gripers: THE PC VERSION IS BETTER AND I WANT TO PLAY IT. Unfortunately, it won't run on my gaming-impaired laptop, and I don't have the money to spend on a desktop that I don't really need for anything other than TF2. So hush. :)
But dude, that bridge cover is a perfect shortcut for Scouts to reach the opposing base's upper level. Maybe if they took some chunks of the roof off, so Snipers could fire in.
@Valve, Remove engineers in Sudden Death !!.
gratz on getting front page homes!
also on topic, i just sold my copy of orange box for 360 and im in debate on if i should get it on pc. i beat portal.. who hasn't am i right? didn't really play hl2 or the episodes very much but i think i could get into them.. LOVE THE CRAP OUT OF TFC2...so now im in debate..is the pc content going to be that much better? and should i just shell out the moneies for the whole damn box again? hmm.. questions questions..
also, awesome read is still awesome read.
Just buy TF2 for PC, unless you're going to want more Portal or HL2. It looks like Valve will be adding new weapons and achievements for all the classes over time, as well as new maps and gametypes. Ugh, the richness of the PC version is sickeningly awesome.
It also kind of seems like, in the original version, the bases were a wee bit further apart. Kind of seems like a Little Tykes version of 2fort now. I don't know though, maybe my memory is making it more grandiose than it actually was.
Also while I'm at it, it kind of sucks that the characters don't all have their own grenades anymore.
But..... now I'm just complaining. =)
Gmod can barely run on a PC at Recommend requirements for most Source games. It's so fucking extremely RAM hungry. Your 360 has 512 MB of Ram. Gmod needs 1-2 GB to not lag the fuck out when you start doing shit, especially when you take it online for a custom LUA scripted game mode (the main attraction of gmod for a lot of people, including me, and something that would never work, on purpose, on a console. Custom content!? You must be out of your mind!).
I still don't have a copy of TF2 yet. I'm planning on it... soon.
Simple solution: bought TF2 on PC, bought M$'s usb adapter for wireless 360 controller. It'll set you back ~50$ to get both, but PC TF2 is worth it.
