Do you use screen protectors for your handheld consoles?
Shadowstew | 8:11 PM on 08.11.2011 7 comments

Screen protectors! Something that always runs through my mind when I buy a new handheld. During every honeymoon cycle of buying a new handheld, I believed that I wanted my new toy to be always in mint condition. I always ended up buying some.

But every time (and I swear every time!) I bought one for my handheld, I always go to a few stages before giving up on it.

Stage 1: Optimistic

"Yeah, this is going to be perfect!" I said as I slowly apply the screen protector on my screen.

"Oh no! Air bubbles!"

Stage 2: Fumble like a madman!

I say to myself, "IT HAS TO BE PERFECT!" as I slowly tear off the screen!

"Whoops!"

"Ahh dust! Must clean it with a cloth..."

(Cloth manages to put more dust on the screen)

I start to hyperventilate.

Stage 3: Applied

"Cool", I say to myself. But why does it look a bit off? I really don't like having a fake screen on my screen. I can see the edges. It's really bothering me...

Stage 4: Fumble to remove it!

"AHH THIS IS TACKY! It looks so unnatural"

Minutes later.

Legit story. A Pi trophy fell on it. While trying to get a screen protector off. Somehow.

Stage 5:

I always change my mind about screen protectors. I mean I spend a good amount of time when trying to apply a screen protector to a handheld. But in the end, I ask myself, "What's the point? There's gonna be a time where I don't touch this handheld for a month."

But, I'm really curious. Do you use screen protectors?

The same thing happened to me when I bought the Hori screen protectors for my 3DS, after I spent some time applying the top screen I immediately took it off. It looked super tacky and it was really pink, complete waste of $10. It's a shame too because I had the Hori screen protectors for my DSLite and they didn't bug me too much.

I have a screen protector on my iPhone. There are air bubbles near the edge but they are mostly covered by the case, as are the edges of the screen protector. I think it looks fine and I obviously use the screen on the iPhone that it makes sense to have one on there. I was going to put one of my DS but I decided against it. The games I have and plan on getting don't heavily use the touch function so I am not terribly worried about the screen getting fucked up. Plus the screen is protected when I close the DS. Maybe not from dust but certainly from scratches and the like.

I can't stand screen protectors.

I don't know why, but the irritate the HELL out of me. I want to smash phones/handhelds that have them on. Again, I don't know why, they just fundamentally make me angry for some reason.

Don't see the point for a clamshell like the DS/3DS, but they're totally viable for something like the PSP or a phone. I don't bother though for the same reasons you listed, and because I don't want to pay a "professional" $20+ to do it for me.

Your post is great, myself I never go with screen protectors because I know the hour or so of turmoil and uncertainty that goes with putting them on.

I use a ds screen protector because of games like Etrian Odyssey. PSP and Phones need one though as anything can scratch those suckers.

I've got a clear plastic clamshell case for my PSP (with cutouts for the controls). It works quite well.

I've never bothered for my DS or GBA SP, as the design protects the screen when not in use.

As for adhesives, never. Homie don't play that.
