About Me
I've never really filled out the section that asks me to describe myself, but I'm making an exception here because Destructoid is so awesome, and the column on the right looks so damn empty without something here. I'm just another guy on the internet who plays lots of games while trying to make something of myself.

You can find many of my posts at my own gaming site http://www.loneshadow.com/

Real men use items. (Smash Bros.)
ShadowXOR | 1:14 AM on 12.03.2007 25 comments

I've always been an item user in Smash Bros., it makes the game way more fun. I hate people who bitch about always turning items off so things are "balanced". They also love banning levels. Fuck that, real men adapt to the situation as it evolves, and it appears that they're right there with us:

My favorite custom game in Melee is all items off except Pokeballs (frequency cranked to max) on the Pokemon Stadium stage. Pure insanity.

I love items on medium, and my friends love them on very low. Compromise? Low.

Furthermore, a few people already want to ban stages like WarioWare and Pictochat, and I will refuse to allow that to happen. You roll with the punches, bitches.

@ Mxy

All bombs and motion-sensor bombs is also quite fun.

Luckily all my friends play with items on medium (occasionally we turn them to low, very low, or off, but not very often). We also use all levels except for a few that we don't like, however we are in the minority because we never play Melee...we like the N64 version way more so we all still play it. We're all excited for Brawl though.

I agree with Necros (and ShadowXOR). The game is meant to keep you on your toes. If you can't deal with changing scenery and an opponent suddenly coming across a tide-turning item, then you shouldn't be playing Smash.

I too am an item user, and one of the reasons I did so poorly in Brawl at E for All was because the Wiimote on its side lacks the single button command for "throw item" that is mapped to Z in Melee. Nobody expects to get hit with a Beam Sword in the face from across the level.

The only level I don't like is the Donkey Kong stage from the N64 version. Ugh. Absolutely hate it. Everything else is fair game though, including all items.

I will likely be using the Wiimote and Nunchuck for Brawl, or the Classic Controller. I like the GameCube controller but I don't like the feel of the L & R buttons (because of the levels of sensitivity) for Smash.

Tino: For the N64 version me and my friend (who play the most out of our group) have three banned levels. One we each choose, and one we agree on. We agreed to ban the unlockable old school Mario Bros. level, we don't like how you can walk to your death. He banned the Donkey Kong level (which I actually love, what don't you like about it?) I banned the Samus level, I don't know why but something about that rising lava just pisses me off even though I'm good at avoiding it.

I think Nate Bihldorf took a few liberties posting the english screens. On the Japanese site it says "Shyukudai owatta?" meaning "Have you finished your homework?" Lil bias much?

I love the chaos of battle with items and a few friends but when a explosive crate spawns or a bob-omb spawns on top of you while you're in the middle of an attack, its a bit infuriating.

Zeke: It happens to everyone at some point so it doesn't really bother me at all...especially considering if I was almost dead I was going to die anyway, and if I wasn't almost dead it's just a bit more damage, I can handle it.

real men also like to fight using characters in big poofy pink dresses. Or at least go with Zsuit samus so you can distract your opponent with her ass.

As a mostly non-item smasher, my friends and I would sometimes have long streaks of games with one item on very high to break up the monotony. I always liked the madness of very high red shells on final destination with fox and falcos.

I love items. Maybe it's because I tend to lose without them though :[

I use items too! We started with all items on with the rate at Medium, but due to massive complaints from my sister I made a few changes. We deactivate the Heart Container and Lip's Stick. Turning off the Heart Container makes sense (even after it was nerfed from the original game), but why Lip's Stick? I don't really know, I guess I'm pretty effective with it or something...

...But seriously, play with items on. It is so much more fun, because it is even more difficult to predict what will happen next. Not to mention that the multitude of different ways items can be implemented adds a great deal of strategy to a relatively simple game. Too bad most "hardcore" Smash fans don't realize this (Zeke the Plumber notwithstanding).

Street Fighter doesn't have items, maybe that makes no items hardcore? This is why I don't compete.

Anyways, Mr. Saturn/Mines on VERY HIGH!

I've been playing final destination with items off for the past two years. Playing SSBM really got a lot more fun for me once I got into the really technical stuff.

I'm still technical, but with items and levels on so that there is more variety and fun. Every items adds completely different strategies for offense and defense.

I'm sure this will be my favorite after I try it.

Pokemon Stadium IS my favorite stage though. It's so epic. The music, the very competitive atmosphere. It's awesome.

I think the key thing for games like this to have is the ability to choose between different kinds/frequencies of music and items and such. It really depends on what you're going for, as well as preference.

By the way, Shadow, I've heard a couple one-liners that I tried to woo your girlfriend. Not a big deal, but YOU know that's not true, right?
