Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Furthermore, a few people already want to ban stages like WarioWare and Pictochat, and I will refuse to allow that to happen. You roll with the punches, bitches.
All bombs and motion-sensor bombs is also quite fun.
I too am an item user, and one of the reasons I did so poorly in Brawl at E for All was because the Wiimote on its side lacks the single button command for "throw item" that is mapped to Z in Melee. Nobody expects to get hit with a Beam Sword in the face from across the level.
Tino: For the N64 version me and my friend (who play the most out of our group) have three banned levels. One we each choose, and one we agree on. We agreed to ban the unlockable old school Mario Bros. level, we don't like how you can walk to your death. He banned the Donkey Kong level (which I actually love, what don't you like about it?) I banned the Samus level, I don't know why but something about that rising lava just pisses me off even though I'm good at avoiding it.
I love the chaos of battle with items and a few friends but when a explosive crate spawns or a bob-omb spawns on top of you while you're in the middle of an attack, its a bit infuriating.
...But seriously, play with items on. It is so much more fun, because it is even more difficult to predict what will happen next. Not to mention that the multitude of different ways items can be implemented adds a great deal of strategy to a relatively simple game. Too bad most "hardcore" Smash fans don't realize this (Zeke the Plumber notwithstanding).
Anyways, Mr. Saturn/Mines on VERY HIGH!

My favorite custom game in Melee is all items off except Pokeballs (frequency cranked to max) on the Pokemon Stadium stage. Pure insanity.

I'm sure this will be my favorite after I try it.
Pokemon Stadium IS my favorite stage though. It's so epic. The music, the very competitive atmosphere. It's awesome.
I think the key thing for games like this to have is the ability to choose between different kinds/frequencies of music and items and such. It really depends on what you're going for, as well as preference.
By the way, Shadow, I've heard a couple one-liners that I tried to woo your girlfriend. Not a big deal, but YOU know that's not true, right?
