Devil May Cry 4 REQUIRES a 5GB installation.
ShadowXOR | 4:45 PM on 01.07.2008 64 comments

Let me just put it out there, I'm a big fan of the 360 and not of the PS3. Now that we've gotten that out of the way I still like to discuss the pros and cons each system has with as little bias as possible. No matter which system you're rooting for, this is both good and bad news for PS3 fans. While I personally think it should be optional, they must have had their reasons. The Blu-ray drive reads slower than the Xbox 360's drive so perhaps the load times were so bad they felt it necessary to require it since all PS3's have a hard drive. I'd like to know if this is an option on the 360 and how the load times are, but I've yet to hear any confirmation on that. Let's take a look at why PS3 fans should be happy...and why they should be sad.

The Good:

-No loading times.
-Only needs to be done once.

The Bad:

-Takes 25 minutes.
-Isn't avoiding installation at least part of the reason people buy console games?
-Takes up 5GB.
-If you uninstall it and feel like playing it again you have to reinstall it. The same applies to taking it to a friends house, you'll have to wait for that 25 minute install again.

Obviously there is no reason to go buy one system or the other over this detail. However, those who own a 360 AND a PS3 will have an interesting decision to make once we hear exactly how the Xbox 360 version function.

bottled dark's Destructoid Blog
lame.

it should have come in both disc and dlc format.
cjpkiller's Destructoid Blog
incorrect.
its optional.
also, read dtoid more.
this was posted in a much better format by an actual editor some time ago.
cjpkiller's Destructoid Blog
oh, and athiestium also posted that the ps3 will have online capabilities, whether that means dlc or online play who knows, but its something the 360 doesn't get.
Eschatos's Destructoid Blog
It's only five gigs.
ShadowXOR's Destructoid Blog
@cjpkiller:

Hey, how about you get your info straight and stop being an asshole? Joystiq is reporting this as well (here) and they say that the 1UP Podcast confirms it. Destructoid reported that it was optional, but it turns out that it isn't.
ShadowXOR's Destructoid Blog
@Eschatos:

Some of the PS3's don't have a big hard drive, not to mention if other games utilize this you could only fit a few games on your hard drive at once.

@cjpkiller:

I've heard both versions are the same (not that it has anything to do with this article's subject). Could you backup your claims of the PS3 getting exclusive content? It's not that I don't believe you, but with you providing other misinformation and being a dick I have no reason to trust you without proof.
ShadowXOR's Destructoid Blog
I like to be able to pop in any game I want at any time. I don't want to have to reinstall if I feel like playing it down the road and I don't want to have 5GB taken up just in-case I feel like playing later. Also I have a lot of friends that miss big releases so occasionally I'll show them a game, I shouldn't have to wait 25 minutes if I feel like showing them the game. I would rather install it for my first play with faster loading times, then have the OPTION of uninstalling it but playing with the longer load times if I just want to show a couple people.
vexed alex's Destructoid Blog
Ouch. I can't believe they'd do this.
Clockwork's Destructoid Blog
That's pretty ridiculous? 5 gigs? I don't even have 3 gigs left on my Xbox 360 Harddrive.
JavTheGreat's Destructoid Blog
Don't you have to install every demo you download from the PSN network?

Why is this different?
Steel Squirrel's Destructoid Blog
Hey.... at least it's still coming to the PS3 huh?
Just watch an episode of something on the tube until it's installed. You're going to be playing the game for hours on end anyway, 25 minutes is a drop in the bucket. Also, you will have probably made up for those 25 minutes later when you're not sitting through long-ass loading screens. Just a thought, you can still be peeved if you'd like.
ShadowXOR's Destructoid Blog
@JavTheGreat:

Because this isn't a demo. I delete the demo when I'm done and buy the real game without it taking up a large percentage of my hard drive.

@Steel Squirrel:

If you're talking to me you apparently didn't even read the article. I'm not peeved at all, I don't even own a PS3. I listed the pros and cons for people to discuss, not to get defensive about. You just reiterated what I said above.

Just talking to anyone who's pissed about it in general.
It wasn't directed at you, I read your whole story.
Just saying, if anyone's pissed about it, there's probably bigger things to worry about.
xper's Destructoid Blog
25 mins is a long time, and it should be optional. but i think there will be no load times in this game, apart from that being hidden behind cutscenes. my prediction: it will be better on the ps3. just like burnout paradise. they're ps games.
ShadowXOR's Destructoid Blog
@cjpkiller:

Taken from the PS3 manual of DMC4:

Install

When the game starts for the first time, Devil May Cry 4 game data will be installed on the PLAYSTATION®3 Hard Disk Drive (HDD). You must install the Devil May Cry 4 game data to play the game. Only one copy of the Devil May Cry 4 game data can be installed to the Hard Disk Drive (HDD). 4.8GB of free space is required to install the game data.
ShadowXOR's Destructoid Blog
@Steel Squirrel:

I agree, it can suck depending on how you look at it, but it is in no way a major deal breaker.

@xper:

How exactly is Burnout Paradise better on the PS3?
Y0j1mb0's Destructoid Blog
@ShadowXOR:

It is indeed Required..you also left this out as well..

The game will use the PSN for ranking modes. You'll also be able to collect achievements in the game (like in the Xbox 360 version) and you'll be able to see what achievements your friends have collected (a la Xbox Live).

That's a really nice thing to see. Sony's longtime vision of letting developers do everything finally pays off. What you can't see is me rolling my eyes. Maybe, just maybe this will be seen as an example to follow by other developers on the console.

Oh and since you don't have to worry about it since you'll get the 360 version if at all what's the big deal to you?

BTW 5 gigs is a tear in the bucket for the average PS3 owner. They either got smart and got the 60 gigger, got the 80 gigger, or really got smart and got the 20 and upgraded cheaply to either 60, 80, or beyond.
xper's Destructoid Blog
better performance on the framerate and the "seemless online integration" works better on the ps3, imo. the framerate is pretty apparent, but the multiplayer will pretty much be the same on both, i just found it to be easier on the ps3.
Necros's Destructoid Blog
Atheistium's info on DMC4 basically said that a) it's got another 5.1 audio option, the option to install (which if it's required is retarded), and what is essentially the PSN equivalent of Xbox Live stuff. So honestly...nothing really exclusive that you can't get on 360.
ShadowXOR's Destructoid Blog
@Y0j1mb0:

I didn't leave that out, I decided to focus my C-Blog on one subject regarding the game rather than include other things.

Would you actually read my whole blog instead of your knee jerk fanboy reaction? I'm NOT worried about it. I created this to discuss the pros and cons because I'm interested in every aspect of gaming. Even if I don't have a PS3 I like to stay INFORMED of everything rather than being an ignorant tool spouting misinformation like others in this thread (cjpkiller).

And despite what you say about people getting smart, many consumers have the version with the small hard drive. As I said this has a good side and a bad side too it. I'm not trolling the PS3 (I even said that no loading times was a nice touch) so you shouldn't troll my C-Blog. Grow up, read what I say, and compose a mature response. I hope that isn't too much to ask.
vexed alex's Destructoid Blog
5 gigs is not a tear in a bucket when you have 20GB. Especially for the simple fact that you're not really getting 20GB out of your box.

Also, most people who get the 20GB I assure you did not buy and install a bigger HDD (despite how easy and awesome it is).
Variable Gear's Destructoid Blog
I'd say that the pros of the installation process outweigh the cons, and, in that case, who cares?
ShadowXOR's Destructoid Blog
As vexed alex says, 25% of your hard drive is no drop in the bucket. Sure, the smarter folk are going to upgrade their drives but the majority of consumers aren't that smart, despite how easy it is. This is a strange move and I'm not exactly sure why they're doing this, I don't think it's in their best interests. However being hardcore (and smarter) gamers, it will cause less issues for us.
casualweaponry's Destructoid Blog
If you have to install it, is it right to assume that each copy of DMC4 will be tied to a specific PS3?

As in this game will have no resale value or tradeability (is that even a word?) with a friend? I don't think I like that at all, even though I am used to it in the PC gaming world.

As a PS3 and Xbox 360 owner, it looks like I have a decision to make...
ShadowXOR's Destructoid Blog
@Variable Gear:

Because it is gaming news...and that's what we discuss here. I still think it should be optional, I don't see the harm in that. They probably won't be requiring it for the 360 so I don't see why they couldn't have just offered PS3 users the option.
ShadowXOR's Destructoid Blog
@casualweaponry:

I'm sure you can install the game on as many drives as you want, it will not be tied to once console (to the best of my knowledge). That would be BIG news and I just don't see that being the case.
ShadowXOR's Destructoid Blog
@Grimlock:

I'm a 360 owner who hopes that it's an option to install. Even if the load times aren't bad I would consider installing it, I would just want the option to pop it in and play with longer loading times if I had uninstalled it but felt like giving the game another whirl.
Y0j1mb0's Destructoid Blog
@ShadowXOR:

Dude I read your post that's why I replied to it. The only difference is when people don't agree with your stupid ass they are "Trolling."

While I personally think it should be optional, they must have had their reasons. The Blu-ray drive reads slower than the Xbox 360's drive so perhaps the load times were so bad they felt it necessary to require it since all PS3's have a hard drive.

Oh really? Facts please..? Back that up bro..if you can..

Here's the reason that it is being downloaded to hard drive..Because it can. While every Sku is different for the PS3 there is one constant..they all have Hard drives.

The 360 can't say that hence no option for them to do so.

The only reason you wrote this post was to stri shit up for your 360 cause.

Now that we've gotten that out of the way I still like to discuss the pros and cons each system has with as little bias as possible.

The only pro's and cons I see Hot Fuzz kid is the PS3's. Where are the bullet points for the 360.?

Weak.
smellyelite's Destructoid Blog
The install should be optional...But considering the end result is no load times, it is well worth it IMO.
ShadowXOR's Destructoid Blog
@Y0j1mb0:

I'm not being a fanboy you moron, I don't have the 360 pros and cons BECAUSE WE DON'T KNOW HOW IT FUCKING WORKS YET YOU IDIOT.

If you want to know basic console workings feel free to look it up, it's common knowledge that the Blu-ray drive reads slower. And the 360 also CAN install games (look at Final Fantasy XI) so there is no reason for them not to have the option.
xper's Destructoid Blog
i tell you, i'll rather install the thing and have no load times than having it streamed off the disc. but when is it out? february 2nd? it's not far away, and i just wanna play the damn thing already.
Y0j1mb0's Destructoid Blog
@ShadowXOR:

Now that we've gotten that out of the way I still like to discuss the pros and cons each system has with as little bias as possible.

I'm a moron because you don't know how to write or head your post correctly. You should of just said lets discuss the pros and cons of the PS3..no problem. That's not How you started...

BTW you hurt my feelings with the moron remark..lol.
ShadowXOR's Destructoid Blog
@Grimlock:

I wasn't citing it as a negative. I was wondering if this is why they require an install. I didn't think the drive speed difference was noticeable either but that is the only reason I could think of on why they would not make it optional.

@Y0j1mb0:

I wrote very clearly, you lack reading comprehension. I mentioned the 360 because it is coming out for both systems and I'm curious what someone who owns both versions would be more interested in. Personally I would prefer an installation (am I a PS3 fanboy now?) but would also like the option to play it without installation, like if I took it to a friends house.
BS3 Owner's Destructoid Blog
I had to install 5+ gb for Oblivion GOTYE.

It didn't take no 25 minutes.
Besides like xper said it's a one time deal.

Soooo it's cool with me anyway. Calm PPL.
HipHop Junkie's Destructoid Blog
This blog is pretty silly. Who really cares about a 5gb install. For any PS3 owner, this isn't even an issue. I have both a 360 and PS3, and I am just going to get the version that looks and plays better than the other regardless of a 5gb download. From what I am hearing, it runs and looks better on PS3. Shadow, why are you worried about what is going on PS3 if you are so anti-PS3. No offense, but are you more worried that it looks like PS3 has a better slate of games coming out this year and this could be just one of them? Just wondering.
Samit Sarkar's Destructoid Blog
Given the option, I’d definitely install it — but I still think they shouldn’t have made the installation mandatory. Thanks for the heads-up, ShadowXOR.

And just for everyone’s information: yes, it is true that the 2x Blu-ray drive in the PS3 reads significantly slower than the 12x DVD drive in the 360. 2x on a Blu-ray Disc translates to 72 Mbps (megabits per second), while 12x on a DVD equals 126.6 Mbps.

ShadowXOR's Destructoid Blog
@HipHop Junkie:

You do realize many big sites are posting and discussing this, right? It isn't silly, it's called gaming news. This isn't common in the industry for consoles so of course people are going to notice, especially for such a high profile title.

If you would read you would understand I like being educated in all aspects of gaming, including the PS3, so that I know what's going on. And I currently don't think the PS3 is worth the money but that doesn't mean I will never get one. Never say never.

And considering I own no shares of Microsoft or Nintendo, I'm not worried about Sony having some good games coming out. And even if I did own shares in both of them...I certainly wouldn't be worried because I'd be laughing my way to the bank looking at how the other two are selling compared to the PS3.

@BrOnXbOmBr21:

Thank you for lowering my blood pressure. Finally someone sane around here. I felt so cold and alone.
ShadowXOR's Destructoid Blog
@Grimlock:

Once again if you would read what I said I was wondering why they would require it and that was the only thing I could come up with. Can YOU come up with any other reason they would require installation rather than make it optional? We need to get you a jump to conclusions mat.

Samit Sarkar's Destructoid Blog
@Grimlock: Look, I own a PS3 and I have very little desire to get a 360. But facts are facts, and what I explained in my above comment is [and this is 100% speculation on my and ShadowXOR’s part] likely one of the main reasons that Capcom chose to make the installation necessary on the PS3. I mean, I don’t have The Orange Box (yet), but I have two friends who do, and they said that the loading times for Portal were pretty bad. Loading times haven’t been an issue for any of the games I currently have, but as they say, less is more (when it comes to loading times, anyway).
HipHop Junkie's Destructoid Blog
@shadow

Whether the big sites are talking about it or not, you can hear from the PS3 owners that it is not a big deal. I read enough of this blog to know that you are a true fanboy. That is not hard to understand. I absolutely love my PS3, and guess what.... after trying for 30 minutes to get into a game on COD4 for my 360, I turned it off and was able to play UT3 on my PS3 for the rest of the night. Now you tell me what is worth the money? lol
Def JM's Destructoid Blog
Can I have one of those mats?

Just trying to break the tension.
ShadowXOR's Destructoid Blog
@HipHop Junkie:

I'm not a fanboy, but you're sure acting like one in your comment. Grow up. I never said it was a big deal if you would actually FUCKING READ.
ShadowXOR's Destructoid Blog
@Grimlock:

I was just curious as to why it wouldn't be optional. I agree that no load times is the lesser of two evils here.
GrayFox's Destructoid Blog
I wish every game had the option to install some stuff on the hardware to lower load times. Would give me a reason to use some of my elite's hard drive.
GuitarAtomik's Destructoid Blog
I have to say a lot of you guys are really jumping on Shadow for no reason.

A console game REQUIRING an 25 minute (Shane confirmed the time on the 1up last podcast) installation isn't news? Because Shadow has an admitted slight bias to the 360 means he shouldn't post about it? It's not like he flamed the PS3 version as being inferior, he just listed the pros and cons. He even admits to wanting the the option for the 360 version.

Keyword there, "OPTION". If it was an option, this wouldn't be a big deal but he has the facts to prove it's required. Granted, 5Gb really isn't that big a deal to the average PS3 owner but still, wouldn't you like the option in case you ever DO run out of space and need to install it? What if other games start REQUIRING it and you see your hard drive space gradually being eaten away by chunks. It won't happen anytime soon, but this kind of opens the floodgates for the possibility.
ShadowXOR's Destructoid Blog
@GrayFox:

That's a really good point...why not have the option for people that have the space? Unless it's a huge pain in the ass to program...

@GuitarAtomik:

Thanks

@Everyone:

I know I can be a dick, and I don't mean to be. But when people put words in my mouth that I never said (or state the my proven facts are wrong) it really pisses me off.
Jonathan Holmes's Destructoid Blog
If it don't waggle then I aint touching it, 5GB or no 5GB.
Jarmer's Destructoid Blog
I have both 360 and PS3 and I will be buying it 1st day for 360. As I will be doing EVERY single cross-platform game until Sony can get it's head out of its ass and get some functioning network shit going.

No in-game xmb is ludicrous at this point in time. I have to quit the game to read a message or see who's online. Granted DMC is a single player game, but still, Maybe I wanna go play some cod4 if a really good friend signs onto xbl... you know?

Plus, 360 controller >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> PS3 controller
