Culprits:
Just over a week ago, I decided to drop in to a local game store to take a look at the games that have been released before the big holiday rush, one of which was Viva Pinata: Trouble in Paradise. I picked up the box, and was reading the information for educational purposes.
I was probably grinning to myself while reading the silly storyline inside the booklet when an employee approached me, and asked if I had any questions. Unsure of the exact style of the game, I asked if it was another party game, a sequel to the original, or an expansion. The guy looked at me as though I just spoke Swahili, and replied "I don't really know anything about Viva pinata, I'm a hardcore gamer - I got spore and stuff. Viva Pinata is for kids."
After which, he went into a very long monologue about how he's in college for game design, but will only design hardcore games, and I should only get spore.
Self-proclaimed "hardcore" gamers - we've all seen them. In our game stores, or in our forums - almost a generic fanboy/fangirl, but with a double dose of elitist pride.
These specific gamers will scoff at you when you ask questions about Crash of the Titans, or show an interest in the latest Kirby game. These gamers will tell me, on a regular basis, that I am not a true gamer, because I prefer Marvel Ultimate Alliance to Gears of War - without even being avidly against Gears of War!
Define a Term...
If everyone would please take a moment to define the term "Hardcore Gamer" in the fewest words possible. Go ahead, I'll wait. This definition for each person should be individually tailored, but have basically the same theme; Someone who thoroughly enjoys games, or video games are a large part of that persons life. Simple, yes?
Unfortunately, with the way gamers behave toward one another, no. For the most part, the most specific definition goes down to individual games, or even one game system from another, rather than the actual gamer.
When any one of us engages our consoles, or computers for a bout of gaming, how do we express that verbally? I can't think of any other way, than "I'm going to
play some games", in slight variations to fit a specific situation.
For instance;
"Want to play some Halo?"
"I've been playing Assassins Creed for hours now!"
"I'm going to play Starcraft."
By using the word
play in every gaming scenario to express our gaming interest, we imply we are going to have
fun with whatever game we decide to boot up.
I am now, more than ever, having a hard time finding the specific fun in gaming. These hardcore gamers, the ones that will come up with some interesting names for me for not playing World of Warcraft, are taking a lot of the entertainment value out of gaming.
We, as consumers, require our
critics, so we know the flaws we're getting into when spending hard earned money on a new game, from the most stripped down, nitpicked standpoint. Knowing these things, we know where our hopes stand so we're not crushed somewhere down the line, and so we might enjoy the game for other aspects.
However, if the entirety of the gaming community, both on and off the Internet, are critics – who is left to just have fun? Also, "You're retarded", or "This game sucked", are not valid criticisms, for the record.
What can be done about it?
Lighten up!
That doesn't mean stop defending your favorites, hardcore or otherwise! Just be more productive about it, try listening, as well as talking.
The hardcore status doesn't change if you tell a fellow gamer about the great time you had playing Jet Set Radio Future, or about how much fun it is to catch Elebits for a few hours. Discuss the "Guilty pleasure" games, the ones with very little content, but hours of entertainment.
You can still be hardcore, after you write a review about something relatively low key, raving about how great Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee was. Or, if you pick up a controller with the kid down the street, and enjoy an afternoon of Lego Starwars. Be just as serious about your time spent on Nintendogs as Resident Evil.
Hardcore gaming doesn't
have to be a status war, trying to size each other up based on gamer score, or how many times we've beaten Ninja Gaiden Black – those are boasting rights, but shouldn't dictate what gamers are "supposed" to play. Let a conversation cover all plains of gaming, from Smash Bros. To Silent Hill.
I would like to be allowed to store Kameo on the same bookshelf as Bioshock, and still be accepted in this hardcore community, if that's all the same to you guys. If that means calling myself a casual gamer, so be it! I'd rather have fun, then
try to sound cool by taping the hardcore label to my forehead. Play the hardcore stuff, but give yourself a treat once in a while with something more laid back.
Also, Pokemon.
I suppose that wasn't so much "hatred" as "ongoing irritation."
Now, imagine me, only being a video game equal rights activist - playing Oblivion in one hand, and Mario Superstar Baseball in the other.
I only play games with gratuitous sex, violence, nudity, and swearing. Oh and games that give me seizures ala Wipeout HD.
(Note: It probably isn't, since I haven't played Pokemanz in like ever, but hey, I can dream)
Also, amazing read.
Also, Spore is far from Hardcore.
Alsox3, Rhymez.
By using the word play in every gaming scenario to express our gaming interest, we imply we are going to have fun with whatever game we decide to boot up.
Love the quote and one to live by as in instead of implying we are going to have fun, we do. Or at least I do. I can critique, review, preview games but ultimately it's about playing them and having fun.
I do all of the above i.e. critique,review..etc.. out of fun as well. And thank God I do for fun because It seems to me that if your profession is to do all of the above, some lose what got them to their job in the first place. Their love of playing games.
Great write up.
I can't say I'm "Hardcore", but being a gamer is like being indie- we're all HARDCORE, no mater what..so it seems.
That deserves a front page right there.
Nice write up, I totally agree! They're supposed to be GAMES.
I pretty much consider hardcore gamers to be people dedicated to gaming. It doesn't really matter what game it is. You play Wii Sports for 5 hours day? Well you're hardcore.
I define a casual gamer, as a GAMER who's interested in videogames, and play them casually. In other words, the soccer moms and old people who's just trying out a videogame for their first time, is not considered a casual gamer. They dont deserve to be called a gamer.
However, I dont believe there's a thing called casual and hardcore games. In my eyes, there's only shitty games, and good games. Take a Bratz game for example - its not a hardcore game, its not a casual game, its just a shitty license game aimed towards lobotomized pre-teen female media victims.
Do you go to GameStop For Tools? He should have his head smashed around with a Halo-edition Xbox. Not that it's relevant, but Spore is the least hardcore of the current batch of games. First excuse you get, put a knee in his groin.
As for me, I just call myself a gamer, if anything. I don't really care about labels, I just do things. The end.
Or, "My 12-year-old nephew loves those same games you do, and he wants to be a designer too! You should totally talk sometime!"
Or, "I don't remember asking for your opinion. I just want information. If you don't have it, say so and then go earn your $6.75/hr in another part of the store because your odor offends both me and commonly accepted standards of hygiene."
Any of those work.
But yeah, that clerk's a dick. Even if he didn't like the game, that's no way to talk to a customer.
You get snotty, elitist factions with any entertainment medium or lifestyle though, not just video games, so you can't really fault those self-proclaimed "hardcore" gamers. It's just a side-effect of being a moron.
none of this is factual, but ive started to think that "hardcore" should be reserved for ppl that play all types of games.. all the time. someone that is so intense about games, they constantly write or read about them, talk about them, think about them besides just playing them. if youre really "hardcore" youll either have respect for.. or regularly play ALL games.. from castlevania to halo, from disgaea to mario bros.. i dont play rpgs much.. but i respect them and dont run my mouth negatively when an rpg lover is talking to me about their favorite series...
the other categories are dependant on what types of games one may limit themselves to.. a casual gamer is self explanatory.. but one that pretty much only plays madden.. grand theft auto, call of duty 4, or pretty much what so many "nowadays" self proclaimed hardcore gamers laud when talking about games... i like to call them mainstream gamers.
but yeah.. even all that is annoying... good read.
Hell, I've been patronized for asking about Halo and Gears, it's sort of the opposite. You know, when people hate popular games and shit and act like you're some college frat boy who likes nothing but shooters. As if they're of superior intellect because they play nothing but "trendy" and "artsy" games.
People are assholes.
Also, Pokemon is win.
And you are harcore too, i mean you do play videogames quite often ...
But every arrogant self enitulation is bad, though everbody does it ...
Good show. This should be promoted.
The term "hardcore gamer" to me is what I would use to describe people who's primary hobby is gaming and spend a lot or all of their dispensible income on that hobby, and normally have a preference to the mainstream blockbuster games. Another character trait they have is mocking those that don't like those big blockbuster games. And if you don't like those games you don't know anything about being a gamer.
For me its all about choice. You like what you like, don't let anyone mock you because you like playing Viva Pinata instead of the current FPS shoot em up.
To me, a hardcore gamer is anyone who views video games as something that's worth as much of their time as movies, books and music.
So everyone who has a freaking blog on Destructoid qualifies.
Being closed minded against anyone who calls themselves a hardcore gamer is just as bad as the clerk in your store. Admittedly a lot of us are obnoxious pricks who say nothing with listening to. Some of us however are erudite and capable of engaging in intelligent debate about our favorite pass time.
'Playing' refers to occupying your time with recreation, and has no specific links to being happy or joyful, or even to enjoyment: in fact it has just as much to do with competition, and it is HERE that I'd argue the term 'Hardcore Gaming' comes from.
Hardcore G's aren't interested in having fun with their games - they just want to be challenged by them, either in competitive play or against tough AI. A Hardcore Gamer is someone who will pump hours into SF3 to find the exact frames for their favourite character to give them an edge in every fight, or who plays Counter Strike to the point where they and their team are among the best in the world.
Hardcore Gamers are people who don't care about the social repurcussions of their gaming: they just live to game. And they live to do it to the best of their abilities, much like a professional football player is no longer 'playng' in the sense you outlined above, or a professional chess player.
What you've described above is, ironically, a CASUAL GAMER. Someone who plays games to put a smile on their face and to be entertained for a while.
Before you start dropping this link condescendingly upon other people's blogs suggesting that they learn from your wisdom, you might want to actually get a fucking clue what you're talking about.
