This past weekend, I had to put down a good friend. His name was Harold IV, and he was an xbox 360. This past Saturday, Harold IV's processor/video chip gave out – and he stopped producing hours of entertainment and fun. Unfortunately, Harold IV was also 4 months outside of Microsoft's 1 year manufacturers warranty, so no comfort rested with Microsoft to resolve my plight.

To me, it seemed odd that microsoft knew about this defect, and could pinpoint my model, but absolutely refused to do anything about the problem. “Oh well, it's outside of warranty now, sucker!”

I did my best to get around the original warranty, into the 3 year extended warranty reserved for sufferers of the ever feared Red Ring of Death. Unfortunately, the Red Ring extension was for a very specific problem with the Xbox 360, that is difficult to emulate without otherwise voiding that warranty, or taking a lot of time to overheat it repeatedly.

So, after arguing with a Microsoft representative, who then informed me it would be approx $100 to be without an xbox for a 2-6 week period, I made a drastic decision. I have upgraded – that is, given Microsoft more money – to bring home a bouncing baby Xbox 360 Elite, with chic black finish, a 120GB hard drive (my old one wore the weakling 20gb hard drive) and High Def cables that don't do much good to me at the moment.

My saved up PS3 monies went toward this replacement...ironic, and somewhat sad, how that worked out.

How do I loathe thee, let me count the ways.

Why is my Xbox named Harold IV? Well, because this xbox was the 4th replacement in my Xbox 360 history of ownership. Don't look at me like that; my cats have not knocked into or slept on any of them, I have not put bologna in the disc drive, I leave plenty of space for ventilation, I don't store them on the carpet, I don't store them upright or where they might be bumped into, and water, beer, or soda has stayed a minimum of 3 ft away at all times…so, what's the problem?

Well, I brought home Harold in November of 2006. We enjoyed a few laughs, playing Oblivion and Hexic, but after 3 days Harold was done. The error message "Please insert this disc into an xbox360" greeted me repeatedly, whenever I attempted to boot up Oblivion and play with Kiren Shade, who was well on her way to becoming an accomplished Mage. Back to the store we went, and thus was born Harold II.

Harold II lasted 17 days, then decided power from my apartment was highly over rated, and even with the security of a brand new surge protector, crashed the power supply, refusing to turn on ever again. Sensing a trend, I decided to purchase the xbox coverage plan for Harold III, which turned out to be good idea. Nine months or so, after Harold III graced my presence, he decided game discs were yummy, and froze with a disc in the drive – refusing to give it back. The clerk at the game store had to pry it open with a screwdriver to get my game back...then replaced Harold III.

This brings us to Harold IV, who outlasted the 1 year warranty with Microsoft, and then started the problems. At the end of this summer, Harold IV decided scratching discs was fun, and should be practiced at least once a week. Unfortunately, this occurred after the warranty had ended, so my only option was to clean everything (discs, and laser lens with a DVD lens cleaner) which seemed to help, somewhat. Coinciding with the disc scratching, the disc drive began to stick shut every time I used it...I should have known.

Until finally, our fiasco this weekend with the resolution being drained to less than a Nintendo64 and the screen no longer showing me pretty xbox things, bringing about the tragic end of Harold IV. After wrapping towels around Harold IV and turning him on, hoping for a RROD (yes, I was actually excited for this) to take advantage of the extended warranty, that would have my xbox fixed for free…I made my choice.

Now, allow me to introduce Lydia, and LydiaII. So much for evoking a sense of reliability by changing the name, and upgrading. Lydia had downloading problems, and loading problems, and extreme gameplay lag. Apparently, one of the few known defects of the Xbox Elite followed me home, and I had to return Lydia first thing this morning.

Not a good track record, Microsoft, seriously.

Why I've stayed by your side, after all the abuse

Also, the rapid price reduction, variety, and selection of their games library. In other words, I don't love Microsoft, I love their cheap games. Now is it clear to anyone why I refuse to drop the full $60 on a brand new game, when I can get the game for under $30 used, and deny Xbox any of that profit?

Why, Microsoft? Why?

Dear Bill Gates, you should be ashamed of the product your company sells to normal, everyday, busy people. You're lucky the games library is much more extensive and varied than the other game systems, or I'd have abandoned ship, like so many before me.

Also, your Microsoft Support page is written in id10t code, it should be translated to something easier to navigate, and read, and send you disgruntled e-mails demanding free stuff.

...Until one day, Bill Gates goes the way of Tony Stark, deciding his company is not in the best interest of the people – what with its greed and lack of any quality, stable products - and use his multi-billions of dollars to become a Superhero. First Windows, now Xbox...will the carnage ever end?

Now, imagine me, only setting electronic devices on fire, simply by entering the room.

Wow, that's sounds pretty bad. Sorta like some sort of bastard child that you hate to love, yet you constantly throw money at it, only to be mocked and teased at.

I'd never put up with that... I'd probably stopped playing videogames alltogether. I envy your patience.

I sent in my second 360 to Microsoft a little while ago, and I found out that I should probably receive my third in the middle of November. That is, after I've received Fable 2, Fallout 3 and Gears of War 2. Wich game am I supposed to play first? I probably wouldnt get the chance to enjoy the games properly. I'd probably rush through them just so I could get to play the next game. What a load of shit!

I hope the big three learns from Microsofts mistakes during the next generation.

@ Projectexodus;

One can only hope they learn from these issues - maybe train certain game retailers how to fix certain things, or make the turn around time faster, or extend the warranty to cover issues they're aware of. Is this too much to ask, as consumers?

Damn, now that is loyalty. Is there any way to get something free out of this for all your trouble? Will complaining get you anywhere if you speak to the right person?

In all reality, I read through your entire blog just to comment on the zombie header image up top. Love it.

Holy shit - Wow, that's got to be the most depressing story of electronics experience I've ever heard.

=(

I wasn't even aware of that performance issue with the elites... which is what I have.

At least you now have a sleek and sexxxy Lydia II to go with your hot electronics-fire-starting ability!

(I'm loving the choice in console name, btw! Perfect fit!)

Also, bargain bin hunting is the only way to go.

Heads up - I've had my eye on the Lego Star Wars Saga from Amazon.com for $20, which might interest you.

I doubt that Bill Gates has much to do with the Xbox, honestly. From what I've heard and seen, it doesn't really seem like Gates directly deals with 360 matters. I think that's why we had/have Peter Moore and Guys Who Will Never Be Peter Moore. I wouldn't so much blame Bill, though. Didn't he retire recently, or something?

Anyway, yeah, this shit should've been fixed a long time ago. I hope MS never lives this down. They really deserve much more flak for it. They would've been laughed off of the market, if they didn't have the best online service and (arguably) the best game selection.

I just picked up that Lego Star Wars Complete Saga from Amazon with that deal, and I'm very happy with it.

Just to give you a heads-up, though, it's like the family edition packaging or something - I don't know, it has a gray border around the cover art on the box, with the word "Family" thrown in there somewhere. Not a big deal.

The PS3 and I are waiting for you Kat with open arms should the need ever arise for you to get another console. Perhaps a day in the future I shall play a zombie level in Little Big Planet created by you.

@Char Anzable - Thanks, nice to know.

@Shadokat - Hrm... After browsing through your older blog entries, I see you've already played and enjoyed the Lego Star Wars game...

One thing for sure is I'll be keeping an eye out for a cheaply priced Web of Shadows because, damn, that aerial combat looks awesome.

Now, imagine me, only reading up on the subject matter at hand before posting.

I guess I'm one of the lucky ones, mine only just died a week ago, after less than a year of play. I figured "oh, it hasn't died yet, I guess I'm just too awesome for it to break on me."

But too many times I hurled it down the stairs, and used it as fuel for my furnace, and it broke. I guess everyone's does at one point or another.

I feel your pain, my 360 got the RROD the day before yesterday. At least I get a free fix, but I'll probably miss out on Gears 2.

The horrible thing is that 360 seem to fuck up right after a big game release and not long after the 1 year warranty has expired. Luckily, after a bit I was able to get the 3 red lights.

Wow, I'm sorry about that... :(

Honestly, I totally understand your logic with the cheaper games since the library is more established, but it's not worth the trouble, in my opinion. I got a PS3 a while ago and sold my 360, and I couldn't be happier. But I love the 360, too. I just refuse to support Microsoft when they know there are so many problems, yet they refuse to fix them.

@ Yojimbo;

The really sad part of this story; I had my monies set aside for picking up a PS3 mid-week...but noooo....this had to happen this weekend! Damn you, Microsoft!

@Arttemis;

It was a good suggestion none the less! Also, I didn't even think of the Beetlejuice Lydia, but hey - I can dig it!

how many times must one be bitten by snakes before choosing a different hiking trail? by the sounds of it, many times. if a certain road always pops your car tires then when, when will we go another route? m$ knows their machine will break, WE know their machine will break, yet here we are, a broken record. a skipping cd. only it doesn't skip or pop tires but becomes a paper weight. i suggest a wii (ha!) or the fabled black monolith itself- the PS3. (mine has been dropped,put in a freezer, travel via backpack via greyhound, and hasn't faltered a bit, and will survive i hope the invasion of david hasslehoff in pain(i hope) )

I think I was one of the lucky ones. My Xbox RR'd once, but I got it back free of charge, with one month of Live, in 6 days. When it came back it was quieter and produced far less heat. Heck, they can borrow mine any time for 6 days if I got a month of Live out of it. That sucks though, for you...it has effected a lot of people.

@Qraze;

If I hadn't already invested a lot of time and interest in the games (a lot of my faves aren't anywhere near Sony...) I'd definitely NOT be with Microsoft any longer. This was completely ridiculous, but hopefully I won't have any further issue.

I will be complaining loudly, as a woman can, to Xbox support come monday.

Some of us don't care much for the Playstation's game selection. Or more to the point, we particularly enjoy the 360's selection. Honestly, if it wasn't for the hardware problems, I'd consider the 360 to be the perfect console. Even though I'm horrified by the hardware issues, the games keep me faithful to the console.

Stop trying to convert people, dude. What's Sony ever done for you?

@Qraze:

Not all PS3s are invincible...

My 80GB PS3 lasted 3 months before the BluRay drive shitted out, took 20 days to replace, and now I have a new console.
My 360 Elite has lasted over a year, and works fine.

Clearly, I'm in the *minority* here (and Microsoft is definitely in the wrong for what Shadokat had to pay and deal with), but not all PS3s are immune to defects.

@ShadokatRegn:

Here's to hoping this is the last 360 you'll ever need! Also, good luck on tearing the people at Microsoft a new one!

Hi ShadokatRegn,
I've recently had the same issue as, I think your 4th...I turned it one one day and the resolution looked like an N64, I then restarted it, and now it shows no picture or audio :(

I've just sent it off to a fix it guy who thinks it's the motherboard...and might be able to fix it for around $35, which would be amazing.

Did Microsoft tell you exactly what the issue was, and if it was the motherboard? I'm wondering if I'm gonna get my baby back or if I'm totally screwed. Thanks for sharing your grief, sounds like a frustrating experience with your 360. I'm seriously considering getting a PS3 instead if they can't fix it, along with LittleBigPLanet :)

Any more info on Harold IV would be much appreciated.
Thanks

thats great you have preferences but the the fact is the machines will break. my ps3 won't survive forever and i understand the time invested in the system, i remember the time and money invested in my launch dreamcast and it was hard to switch to the ps2 but it had to happen and it was a good change in the end.
i would love to have a 360 but i can't throw money at everything i want, and knowing it will eventually break-breaks the deal for me. we all have our reasons why or why not we don't get certain consoles but if i eat taco bell and constantly get sick from it, i quit eating it.
i would love to experience some 360 games but for me its not possible. when i know the 360's won't break, thats when i'll buy one but until then, i will enjoy my decision and i really hope you do too. but when i or you don't enjoy it, thats when the change comes in.
i know some peolpe who blindly follow their choices even when the nasty truth is smacking them in the face and thats just idiotic to me. and no console is the "perfect" console,its just a opinion. i can go on about the faults in all three but that would be more of opinions with a few facts. #1_in_the_hood_G!!

Keep buying used games. Protest the price hike of newer games. (when I was younger they cost $50 not $60.) it's all a scam, buy our product, oh it fails right after the warranty expired? Buy a new system." That's fine for someone who has dollars coming out of every orifice, but for the typical consumer we can't afford to by a new system every year. Heck, we can't afford to buy a new system every generation leap.
I bought a Playstation 3 after I read a few articles about how it survives extreme conditions. I also recall my PS2 being yanked off its shelf and shaking it off like it was nothing. I know that make a good solid product.
my friend let me borrow his xbox 360. It's not a bad system, built there's a ton of things I hate about it (I have to pay them if I want to download a DLC game)
I wouldn't be loyal after 4 systems died on me. I would be PISSED.
