Vita Proprietory Memory cards ARE NOT EXPENSIVE

I'm getting kind of tired of every single Vita based post being filled with comments of "how dare they charge so much for the memory cards!" and such shit.

Let's get one thing clear. A lot of you guys, and myself personally have been conditioned by less than official, online memory retailers into thinking memory is cheaper than it is.

Now i'm sure you can pick up a hooky Chinese 16gb micro SDHC card for less than 10 on eBay. Easy. Sure it'll have a 1/5 chance of working right away and chances are if you unlpug it without "properly unmounting" it it will corrupt and you'll have to wipe it. But it's there, it's cheap and it kinda works.

You could even spend perhaps 17/18 on one with a reputable name on it, have it shipped from China and have no troubles what so ever. You could even pay an extra couple of 's and have one shipped from local stock! But then you're heading towards what we all consider "expensive" - which is actually the kind of price you'll find in a normal shop.

Still, if you want to go into a brick and mortar home electronics store (I'm taking where joe public goes when they need a TV, or a PC) over here we have Curry's, Dixons etc. and buy a 16GB micro SDHC card you will be paying between 26 and 40 for a "normal," no longer "new technology" bog standard, basic SDHC card in proper packaging (easy to forget that your memory never comes in proper packaging when you only ever buy them cheap on ebay)

http://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/samsung-class-10-microsdhc-memory-card-16gb-10969075-pdt.html

http://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/verbatim-44007-class-4-microsdhc-memory-card-16gb-11076230-pdt.html

http://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/samsung-microsdhc-memory-card-16gb-11001693-pdt.html

Now i've just paid 34 for a 16GB VITA card (the biggest available over here - possibly due to all the fucking "OUTRAGE" about the pricing from the internet population) a price which some would consider unacceptable or extortionate.

I don't.

Sony are not basing their pricing on "what you can get something similar for if you go out of your way and take some risks" ie. ebay or imports. They're basing their pricing on what these things cost at RUN OF THE MILL, NORMAL, HIGH STREET electronics stores, in proper packaging with a normal retailer mark up.

Not only that, but they seem to have based the pricing of this "new" somehow "different" proprietory memory on the pricing of THE OLD VERSION of the memory. With the Vita card prices being near enough in line with major retailers microSDHC prices sometimes actually CHEAPER!

So yeah, in short, as someone who has seen for many years SD cards priced up in high street consumer electronics retailers at ~70 for a 32gb card and anywhere up to 50 for a 16gb i really don't find the pricing on Sony's "new" Vita cards to be all that bad. It is in fact in some cases cheaper.

I mean from what I read the Vita cards are "faster" - if so, we want to be looking past the expensive "class 10" cards you find at the top end of the pricing bracket - which, again in high street retailers are often MORE EXPENSIVE than the Vita cards.

If you're that worried about them or that against paying a bit more to have something on release then you know exactly what you have to do...

Just. Fucking. Wait.

Get a cheap memory option from some Chinese Ebayer in a few months time and shut the fuck up.

Will I run in fear from possible information theft?

Will I fuck!!

My card / bank account / money ONLY EXIST for me to use to pay for the stuff I want, the things i want to do and to do so conveniently. It serves no other purpose.

I refuse to live my life in fear that someone might steal my precious money or details, and I refuse to give up the convenience that using a card entails, just because there is a slim chance that someone could perhaps get hold of my details.

Oh noes!

Don't you be looking at my Pin now y'hear, no seriously, look away awkwardly please.

Everytime you use an ATM machine there is a chance it's been hacked to clone your card (has happened twice to family members) everytime you use your card online there is a chance the details could go astray (I used to write cc details onto paper orders with thick black pen at a fairly large online retailer, sometimes those paper orders went missing, it happens.). Should we all go back to using only cash?

The other thing (I don't know how it works in the USA) but UK banks tend to cover you for that shit. If you notice something you didn't authorise coming out of your account, they lend you interest free money to cover the loss right away and then reclaim it from their insurance or whatnot. Either way, it all comes back, and you're not even left out of pocket in the meantime!

Banks also have added protection such as the verified by Visa system, which pushes any fear back further into the depths of my mind.

We could embrace and accept this modern age of convenient payments, stored details and possible data theft, or we could all hide behind the fear that someone might get our monies and have to go to a store, to pick up a card to type in the code, to buy what is, essentially an instant purchase and download product. It just defeats the whole prupose.

I think that using pre-paid cards because of fear destroys the whole convenience and the whole buying ethos of not only online services like the PSN, but of credit/debit cards in general!

Personally it wouldn't make a shit of a difference anyway, as a whole lot of companies / services have my details on file for instant payments, and I like it that way...

PSN
XBL
Steam
Paypal
Dominos Pizza
Amazon
Just-eat
Hungry House
Littlewoods
Virgin Media
.......to name but a few.

If you are so scared that you will turn a one click purchase into a trip out to buy a card and all the extra bullshit that that entails, well, if that's the case, I truely feel sorry for you.

Personally the moment the PSN store comes back online I will re-enter all of my payment details, I will ensure my automatic payment for PSN+ is still set up and I will sit back and enjoy knowing I can spend my own money on the things I want at the click of a button free of the fear that seems to dictate to so many how they live their lives.   read

A little blog post specially for chronicus_prime

Hey buddy, don't mean to call you out or anything but you called me, yesterday "a lying ass bitch" because I was saying my Black ops games on Xbox LIVE suffer from many connection issues.

I was gonna leave it, but then today, in my lunchbreak I played 2 rounds of Black ops, no more, no less, well, a little less because looky what popped up (after the little unplugged cable logo) about 2 minutes into round number two....

Now I know the picture doesn't show much, but I kinda had to grab my phone and take it from my gaming chair position quickly but, this was honest to God on LIVE and within 15 minutes of starting my game session.

That's right mate, XBL is "buttery" 100% of the time. If butter has trouble staying connected to the servers/host of what is currently it's most popular game, and cost 40 a year.

(In fact, due to it's nature, butter probably would have a bit of trouble staying connected to just about anything, except bread, it's good with bread)

I'm gonna have to start taking shots of all of these, i get a variation of 3 different problems pretty much on daily basis (not including the occasional: "The Matchmaking Servers for the P2P game you paid for on the online gaming network you pay for, are currently unavailable") - and as I've said before, this is far more understandable and acceptable when you're not paying 40 to get disconnected.

*Just FYI, I run my PS3, PC, Mac, Xbox, PSP, and Mrs SC's DSi XL through the same 50mb/s fibre optic cable broadband and ISP supplied wirelss router - and I have more problems with Xbox LIVE than any other platform. Funny, being as though it's the ONLY ONE I have to pay a subscription for*   read

Which pop star recently made a surprise return to the group Take That?

Was it..

A: Robbie Williams
B: Robin Williams
C: Rob Zombie

That was the weekly question I received by text, for the episode of the gadget show I wasn't even watching.

As usual, I laughed at the sillyness of the question and responded with nothing more than a text saying "A".

3 weeks later, the phone rings and it's a number I don't recognize. "It's probably my mobile company calling about me paying my bill late" I thought...

"Hi, can I just confirm your mobile number please? OK, that's great, I'm calling to let yo know that you've won the gadget show competition! Congratulations! I need your details, height for the bikes, shoe size for the rollerblades and trainers, and clothing size for the Golf clothing."

Phew, man that list is epic, but not half as epic on paper as it was in real life! Two weeks later, this arrived...

And another one with me, Mrs SC and SC mini in front...
(You may notice the lack of my mohawk, mrs SC trimmed it recently for me, but was in a bit of a rush, and so took WAY too much off, leaving me with more of a tuft than a mohawk, so I shaved it off. Sad day)

So after about 2 hours of shifting boxes into my fairly small house, it was as full as it's ever been or going to be with awesome gadgets!...

And SC mini looking unimpressed with the gadgets...

...until he finds the interactive cuddly toy!

So for all of Monday my house was packed like some kind of gadget warehouse! Until I got through box after box, marking stuff "keep" or "sell" and unpacking and setting up all the keep stuff.

I was really interested by the "High End Gaming PC" from the list, was it going to be a big Alienware tower? Was I going to be able to plug it into my TV? Or would I be needing a desk?

Then I spotted the box, this is probably my favourite thing on the whole list...
(unfortunately Dtoid seems to be having trouble uploading that image, but it's a Sony Vaio Touchscreen PC, like a 24" screen, with the whole PC built into it, one cable, no tower, wireless kb/m it's gorgeous. Which now lives next to my 50" plasma TV.

I don't seem to be able to upload images taken on my new camera.. weird. But the only images worth mentioning on there are of my new TV, with PS3, cable TV, surround sound and Xbox 360 plugged into it. PS3, surround sound and Cable box taking up shelves on my media unit, and the 360 taking pride of place, on the floor down the side of my unit. lol.

Bit of a bummer that I'm having trouble with the other pics, maybe too big from my new camera, who knows.

I'm sure I'll sort it out and when I do, more pics will follow....

So yeah, I'm one happy happy bunny right now, blogging in my den, from my Macbook, listening to Sleigh Bells really loud on my amplamp.

But I've got to go, as someone is coming round shortly to buy my Easy Glider - I'll never use it.

And in case it matters to you, I've so far sold enough to pay off about 75% of my debt, that's all I'm selling, enough to pay off my debts. The rest is mine I tell you, ALL MINE!

I'll try to find something cool to do a Dtoid competition with too.   read

A Sony fanboy gets an Xbox360...

As you probably know, I'm a bit of a Sony fanboy, I'll admit it, I ain't gonna hide it.

So I just got my first Xbox 360 yesterday, won it in a competition (pics, and full epic delivery of 2nd best day of my life blog coming soon) wouldn't have paid money for one, but a free slim? With Kinect (selling)? I ain't going to say no!

Yesterday I didn't even transfer my old PS3 to my new one (won a slim PS3 too), despite the fact that my old one is hella noisy. Instead I set the 360 up, grabbed Black Ops from my local shop and sat down in my gaming chair (also won) in front of the 50" plasma (won) to play some CoD.

OK, so apparently when you register a LIVE account you get a free month or something? Not me. I think because I signed up on a PC before getting my 360, to secure my username (Foolishbean69) that I missed out on that one. Nevermind, fuck it, I'll be playing for a year, purchase one year 40.

"Great, so I'm online, got CoD, let's get busy. Ew, the controller feels wierd, sure I'll get used to it. Game seems OK, can see what people mean about poor graphics, but it's plenty of throw-away fun."

You have been disconnected from the server (or words to that effect)

"?"

Checks internet..

Download 45mb/s
Upload 4mb/s
Ping 16

Literally in the space of maybe 3 hours, I got disconnected from the game maybe 5 times. Not to mention some noticable lag, and it taking AN AGE to find games.

*I've grown bored of this now and I'm playing Tropico 3 on my new Sony Vaio touchscreen PC*

Again today I get back from work, Mrs SC amd SC mini are out, so I've got the place to myself and the neighbours deserve some comeback for being such noisy bastards recently. Set up my new surround sound system (won) and get in the gaming chair. Fire up CoD. (In doing so, get lost in the NXE thingy, man, that is FUCKING HORRIBLE) and hit "Multiplayer".

And wait.

And wait.

"The Call of Duty servers are currently unavailable, please try again later"

?!!!!

I know, this is Activision's problem and not Microsoft's, but never the less, I'm currently paying whatever it costs per day to NOT be able to play the game I want to play.

Xbox LIVE is Fucking Brilliant. Well worth the money.

I mean, it's not like I can NOT play CoD and get kicked out of game after game after game after game on the PSN for free, is it?

Oh wait, i can?

*Fires up PS3 and is too busy playing awesome games, and actually playing them online, to write blogs.*   read

Please watch this. You WILL ENJOY IT - I promise you.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00n1j8q

OK so that right there, is a link to Charley Brooker's Gameswipe. You can thank me later.

Charley Brooker is a British legend, he generally takes the piss out of the news and TV and is kinda like Jim Sterling, if only Jim had stayed in the UK and got his own TV show.

The games show has a really funny look at how the media treats gaming, and gives an idiot's guide to game genres. All simple stuff, but being as though it's Mr Charley Brooker doing it, it's funny as fuck.

The only part i didn't like was 2D fighters being classified as "Beat em Ups" and the way that for multiplat titles they just picked a console and stuck it's name on it. Still, it's a really interesting and entertaining watch for anyone who likes video games.

Enjoy!

Response to questions and worries in MAG update post's comments...

OK, so maybe this was too big for the comments, or maybe Dtoid just doesn't like my ranting essays anymore, either way, below is my response to this: http://www.destructoid.com/details-emerge-on-mag-patch-1-07-180058.phtml

I LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE MAG and this is a very welcome update!

Make the maps look even better with new lighting? WIN

Happy hour? WIN

Faster updates? WIN

Neutral Suppression? WIN

I know, I know, i've used this image before...

I'm currently on my 4th Veteran (aka prestige / tour) and still cannot stop playing it, there's an awesome and active Dtoid clan on Raven, despite being in a different time zone i often stay up till 5am playing with those guys.

Also, to people worried about player count in this MP only game - don't, there are ALWAYS plenty of people to play with, at the very very very worst scenario you're choice of gametype is a little restricted, but Zipper actually alleviated that MASSIVELY recently by giving double XP if you let THE GAME choose what game type you go into (often putting you in the less popular ones, but DOUBLE XP) - I do wonder how this will work alongside the happy hour, 4x XP???

@PatriotSnake - Get Resuscitation, you'll get loads of XP reviving team mates!

@NapalmMcT DDS - I would splooge my fucking pants if MAG got Move support! Buying anyway, but it really would make my year!

@HPV - The vehicles are not supposed to be driven around like tanks, they're simply mobile spawn points, NOT WEAPONS! You put them somewhere safe and leave them there. Sure, they could handle better (Zipper did improve them greatly recently) It's really frustrating when someone takes your whole squads "forward spawn point" on a fucking joyride around the map!!!

I literally can't stress it enough that if you have the slightest interest in MAG, just get it. It's fucking brilliant!

I really don't remember the last game that i was so into even after 160+ hours, (I normally get really bored, really quickly, think it maybe borderline ADHD) and there are a lot of players like me, I think Elsa has about 500 hours, Clockwork-zombie has played a tonne, Tsukanda and Mongoose are often online too, JoeG's getting some time in, and many others. I mean there's a whole Dtoid crew, just waiting to play with you guys! What are you waiting for?

MAG it's self is probably my favourite game this generation. Despite all the "generic shooter" comments it got from, honestly, from those that were jealous of it or didn't understand it, it's like no other shooter Ive ever played, and i've played a whole lot of online shooters since the Counter Strike days.

Sure BFBC2 has objectives, which controlling opens other objectives, but it's like 4 games of BFBC2 all going on at once, with tactical strikes, leadership, mobile spawn points, Anti Air emplacements, Paratroopers etc, all linked to what's actually going on. Not Battlefields "on this map you paradrop in" - more like "right, we've got the AA down so you guys can now paradrop in, Oh shit the AA is repaired, we can no longer paradrop in!" - Completely dynamic and player controlled.

When attackers push in the enemy in MAG domination games the forces come together until it's 128 people defending a building / compaound and 128 people attacking it! (It's split up by objectives, but you more often than not will go help other squads)

i could ramble on about this game all day, but Ill save you from reading all that.

I'm personally PASSIONATE about MAG. I fucking LOVE it. At least rent it, give it a try, because if you do get into it you'll never look back.

(It is a difficult game at first, it's not pick-up-and-play like CoD, it will probably take a good few hours to climb it's learning curve, but it's oh so worth it when you do!)

Also, drop by the MAG thread in the forums - we're a friendly bunch, always happy to answer any questions you may have.

Single-player? or Multi-player?

Aurain and I were having a discussion in the deep dark bowel of Destructoid, known as the forums, about whether single-player-centric games or Multiplayer-centric games are "better" or higher quality, I figured I would share my veiws on the topic with the toid community and see what you guys have to say on the subject.

Aurain: "Single Player games are consistently better than online focused ones.
Compare the quality of Red Dead Redemption to MAG, Warhawk, CoD6 or Battlefield Bad Company 2 and it's pretty apparent."

In my opinion, we all have our preferences, but personally I am ALL ABOUT multiplayer.

I'll take my latest (almost finished) single player experience: Red Dead Redemption and compare it to my current Multiplayer addiction, MAG:-

"I played perhaps, 20 hours tops of Red Dead single player, (more than that on multiplayer) and I'm bored, I just want to get it done and finished now. Whereas I'm currently at 100+ hours of MAG and STILL love every minute."

Don't get me wrong, Red Dead is a fantastic game! When the music played as I entered Mexico, it was pretty epic, and the story was excellent, with some great characters. But I KNEW it was still all scripted, all predetermined, I was literally just "along for the ride." If anything the addition of random encounters has really pushed Red Dead away from the "working through a scripted story" boredom i suffer from single player games, but just not quite enough.

When I'm playing MAG, barking orders to real people and they're replying and alerting the team to threats and such, suggesting attack routes, requesting support etc, it's just so much more natural and exciting, and for me, i would consider it on par with a good story.

In MAG when the enemy throws a whole squad at your AAA (again a decision made by another human in the game) and you're busy defending a bunker, that's not a situation designed by any developer, that's a situation where you need to make fast decisions based on what's actually happening and the info you have, not a situation that has been setup with a certain method for getting through it.

You might not even be able to get through it in MAG, you might take your whole squad to the AAA, lose the bunker, get killed and spawn miles away back in the base, or you could keep the bunker and slowly push back to the AAA while getting paratroopers dropped all over you and airstrikes etc. Creating the always difficult task of repairing an Anti Air gun, while having paratroopers landing right on it, all around you.

I just love how ad-hoc you have to be in Multiplayer games, especially games like MAG and to a lesser extent Battlefield Bad Company 2.

Many years ago, possibly about 10 years, I started playing Counter Strike on the PC, over a shoddy connection with horrible lag, but I loved it! Ever since that wonderful time, the whole "beating enemies that are simply AI, essentially designed to be beaten" lost all of it's appeal.

Multiplayer gaming is more like sport, it's a battle of skills between multiple humans. While a single player game feels like a movie with you making a lot of the decisions and controlling the actions of the protagonist.

Sure I enjoy blowing through a single player game for the story, kind of like I enjoy watching movies, but for me, it's infinitely more satisfying to kill/beat an enemy and to know there is someone on the other end thinking "GOD DAMN IT FOOLISHBEAN69 GOT ME!"

Sure, single player games tend to have better graphics and the obvious thing of a story, they often have more characters and those characters almost always have more depth to them, but multiplayer games, in my book, are a completely different animal. Something done for challenge, something in which I can dominate other real people, not something where I'm just going through the motions, getting stuff done and almost WORKING to get through to the end.

You may judge quality by graphics, story, characters etc - but i judge quality by FUN mostly, satisfaction, and also how many hours that it stays FUN.

I get far more dopamine released into my brain from playing online games than from trudging through a single player story, knowing every scenario has been designed to be played a certain way, with a certain (even if multiple) ways to get "past" that scenario and onto the next pre-scripted problem / challenge.

Hi, my name is Dan, I am an Online gamer.   read

The three species of "Gamers"

As far as I'm concerned, what "type" of "gamer" you are has got nothing to do with what you've played, how much you play, how long you've been playing games for or how good you are at them.

It is 100% in my honest opinion, a PASSION FOR GAMING that makes you a GAMER.

If you have a PS3, and an Xbox360 a Wii and a top end PC, but you don't really play them much, or would rather do other things and just hit up the odd bit of MW2, Wii Sports or Mario now and then - you are not a gamer in my book.

If you have only got a Wii, but you LOVE it, spend your time reading about forthcoming games and hunting out rareties, counting the days till the next big release - YOU ARE A GAMER.

My friend has a Wii and a PS3, I've spent the last week trying to persuade him to get Red Dead Redemption, he has always been a massive fan of Grand Theft Auto games and I'm trying to tell him that Red Dead is right up his street, he's not really bothered, he'll probably pick it up when it's less than half price and no-one else is playing it anymore. The one and only game he's bought in the last year, was MW2 (he has PLENTY of expendable money) and he plays that now and then, I lent him Fallout 3 many months ago, he hasn't touched it. I consider him a casual gamer.

My other buddy, is 46 has 2 kids and a seriously hot wife (unrelated to the story). He's got a Wii and a PS3 too. (not to mention a house littered with PSP's, DS's and DSI's.

He is shite at playing games! Fucking terrible. Watching him play RDR was nothing more than painful, despite having played GTA4 he just didn't understand the concept of cover, or how the auto aiming worked. Watching him crouching wiggling his corsshair around trying to get it somewhere near his target was literally hurting my eyes. He CANNOT handle online PvP games ("wah wah I can't kill anyone, wah wah got killed AGAIN") and he mostly plays Tower Defence games, Savage Moon being his game of choice, he has one more trophy to get on that.

But he's always got his eye on forthcoming games, he ALWAYS buys the AAA games at launch, more often than not buys the guide books too (I'm not a fan of playing games "by-the-book" myself), comes to midnight launches with me and is often asking "Have you heard about this game?" He loves his gaming t-shrits and proudly wears them everywhere.

He is a gamer in my book, perhaps even a hardcore gamer.

My Dad was wandering past a game shop when the Wii first launched (while there were serious stock shortages) dropped in and asked "Do you have one of those Wii things?" strangely enough they had just received a shipment and had 2 spare! He bought one, with WiiSports, Need for Speed and Tiger Woods. I later bought the godfather for his wii and mum saw WiiFit on TV so he got that for her. Later I bought him Rapalla fishing frenzy for his birthday.

He played a little rapalla with me on his birthday and forgot it existed. Mum got bored of Wiifit in a week and now my sister has bought Guitar Hero for it and when she comes back from uni plays that, occasionaly. Now and then my little cousins come over and will crack out the WiiSorts, but that's about it.

My family are not gamers, they're not even casual gamers.

I ONLY have a PS3 and a PSP, a piss poor laptop that won't play games and that's it.
I play games every day without fail, in my lunchbreak i go home and play an hour of whatever has my interest at the time. I read Dtoid every single day, very rarely miss a front page post, I know when games are due to come out and i have an account at the local store full of pre-orders. I get excited on Wednesdays (used to be Thursdays) to check out what's new on the PSN store, it's the first thing i do after work.

I thrive on Multiplayer but also love a good story, I play AAA games, weird rare games, downloadables, Japanese games ANYTHING. I often play games when I should be doing other things, I often spend money that should be spent on other things on games. My gaming habit sometimes gets me in trouble. I always stay up late playing games and it makes me tired at work.

I'm a hardcore gamer, I'd even happily say that I'm an addict.

So yeah, that's how I define the thre types of gamer.

TL:DR...

Casual Gamer - Doesn't really care about games, couldn't tell you what the next AAA game is.

Gamer - Cares enough to know when the next big game is coming out, will buy it, but will only play it when they have some time to kill.

Hardcore gamer - Has that shit pre-ordered and is counting down the days, will sacrifice other things to get it and to play it on launch day, will probably play it for long extended periods, often until they fall asleep, controller in hand.   read
