Hot from the Destructoid reddit comes this article from USA Today talking about a confirmed
'Help' feature coming soon. Miyamoto himself is quoted as saying the following,
"In New Super Mario Bros. Wii, if a player is experiencing an area of difficulty, this will allow them to clear troubled areas and take over when they're ready" confirmed Miyamoto, through his translator. "And yes, we're looking into this for future games, too"
New Super Mario Bros. Wii is going to include an option in the game that lets you pause the game and let the game beat difficult sections for you. Obviously I linked the article to you here, so you should just go click it and read it since I really don't want to copy and paste the article here and claim it as my blog. But really? Let the game beat itself for you? Isn't the whole idea behind old-school Mario games to overcome some really damn hard challenges? I mean it's called a
challenge or
problem-solving for a reason! Surely nobody plays a Mario game for the story, and really weren't games like
The Lost Levels made simply for the purpose of being fucking hard? This is like playing tee ball where there are no outs, no score is kept, everybody gets trophies, and nothing fucking matters. Coming soon,
Mario Kart Wii 2 which allows you to let the game turn the damn car automatically, and everybody gets the same amount of points after a race.
I mean really, just when I think my distaste for Nintendo is fading they always pull something like this. I know it's optional, but ugh the fact that they even thought to create it bugs me. I'm sorry, I actually like playing my video games.
(Also, kudos to Trev for pointing this out to me)
It makes sense to me as a way to remove frustration for those people and let them enjoy the game. I imagine the idea is that if they have fun playing a "core" game, they'll try more.
It's liking riding a bike with training wheels, swimming with water wings, or playing tee ball before baseball. Once you've moved beyond those things, you rarely go back. But for someone who is new to the activity they take away the element of fear.
And in a bloody Mario game as well.
This whole new "patent" is just funny: and I agree, Nintendo (slaps head). LOVE THAT MONEY!
That's what all the casuals will say. And deep down, it will hurt you.
....
So wait, Brink gets no flak for guessing what your trying to do and then doing if for you?
But in all seriousness, this is absolutely retarded, and I really hate the casual gamer. But I guess for the people who suck at video games (fuck you Wii Fit) this is a nice addition. . . bastards. . .
@JLanphear: While not automated, there were people you could pay to inflate your Gamerscore/get Achievements if you wanted. Not sure how that worked or even if they're in business
I think gamers are getting lazy these days. I mean yes, it's handy for people who are new and all, but it's stuff like that that gives sites like GameFAQs a meaning to exist! Why need a FAQ when the game will play itself for you?
Then again, maybe this is a good thing. MGS4 was already a movie, and this'll help make games edge towards that side of the spectrum now. =P
I'll be playing through NSMB2 the old fashoned way.
News flash, Nintendo doesn't design games with the people like us in mind anymore, they make them for what makes up the bulk of their market, the and I hate this word, "casual" market.
No need to throw a hissy fit as it will most likely be optional.
Let me quote Tom Hanks from A League of Their Own:
"It's supposed to be hard. If it wasn't hard, everyone would do it. The hard... is what makes it great."
Last time I checked, people buying your stuff was a pro.
Wow.
People buy shitty products. People have always been buying shitty products. This generation is no different. It's only the shitty products have better advertising that the products 75 percent of the world could give a damn about, because they don't know shit about them.
Bejeweled is easy, look how many people obsess over that.
I guess this will be ok for young kids that can't play worth a damn but Nintendo has sooo lost touch with most gamers.
1) Really <3 your banner picture..
2) It almost never fails.. Seems like the minute I start liking Nintendo again, news like this makes me never want to ever get excited about them ever again.
I think tutorials are better for newbies than outright hand-holding. But, alas, I know I'm not the target demographic, yadda yadda.
Who cares?
Just don't take advantage of it yourself and it won't hurt you.
"This level is impossible . . . I'll let the game do this part."
they're already doing that. the only reason to implement something like this is because a certain part of a game isn't fun. it's one thing if you're playing it on hard or extreme or whatever and you're asking for it. but we already have difficulty levels, games are as dumb as ever, do people really need any more babysitting?
