Summer is going through its dog days period right now which means that college folk are realizing school isn't that far around the corner, baseball pennant races are heating up, football training camp is in session, and the fall and holiday video game releases are coming. While I'm currently plowing through a bunch of titles I didn't get around to earlier this year (now including Left 4 Dead) I can't help but think of the games on the horizon that I'm getting all giddy over. However along with those certain titles that make me smile like a kid again, there are some titles coming that I really just can't generate enough interest in to pre-order them or simply keep an eye on. While these titles are not going to be by any stretch of the imagination bad games, don't expect me to be waiting for these on day one. Thus, in the spirit of blogging, I decided to put together a list of the top five games I really can't wait for and five games I just kind of shrug my shoulders at. To freshen things up from my normal format of Top ___'s in my blogs, I'll alternate between games I'm excited for and not excited for.
Honorable Mention: Splinter Cell Conviction
This game would definitely be in the realm of excitement had it not been for a delay until 2010, which sucks. I've been a fan of the Splinter Cell games since the start and I've really enjoyed the direction the series has been going in (and I personally thought Double Agent had the best single player story of the four existing titles). Splinter Cell has always been the go-to game for people craving a more realistic experience then what Metal Gear Solid provides, and it's already been far too long since Sam Fisher's graced a console. Not Excited #5 The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks
I'm not excited about Spirit Tracks mainly because this game seems to represent everything I dislike about some of the recent Zelda games; reliance on just one new gimmick in the game, Toon Link, and if the trend of previous Zelda games keeps up then it will probably be super easy too. Basically this game seems to have everything I don't want in a Zelda title in it. I'll explain my details of my dislikes about the franchise in a later blog. So, unless this title magically cures cancer upon being inserted in my DS, don't expect me to pick up this title any time soon after its release. Excited #5 Final Fantasy Dissidia
I've been begging for a Final Fantasy mash-up fighter since before Smash Brothers made mash-up fighters cool to the masses. Yes, there was Ehrgeiz, but I wanted something good to play. Perhaps my desire for a Final Fantasy crossover was fueled by SquareEnix creating all these nice characters from game to game and then pretty much shelving them after there one respective title was up. But alas, we have Final Fantasy Dissidia on the way and it gives me everything I've wanted plus more. I can have Advent Children-esk battles with all of the main characters from the first ten games, I can also jump into the fray with some of the coolest villains in the franchise (and Jecht), and I can hopefully play as Sephiroth and pound the holy piss out of the waste of a villain that is Kefka. Not Excited #4 Brutal Legend
I've already blogged about my disliking of Brutal Legend so my stance on it is pretty clear; the over the top clamoring about this games creators has over dosed me to the point where I cant stand the words Brutal Legend anymore, toss in the legal drama over the game and it's created a perfect storm of dislike for me. Why is Brutal Legend not higher on my list you say? Well, believe it or not my distaste for this game has actually lessened since I initially blogged about it to the point where I can mildly tolerate this. Excited #4 Halo ODST
My excitement for ODST balances on two things; the games story and the potentially great survival mode it offers. Since ODST does not feature a full blown multiplayer mode like its Halo cousins this game actually seems to put a direct focus on single player and story, a major issue people have voiced regarding the recent Halo sequels. Considering I'm a huge fan of the Halo Expanded Universe I really hope ODST is a worthy addition to the canon and shushes up the idiots who put too much hate on the Halo games for its story. Plus, what's not awesome of playing a Halo version of Nazi Zombies while playing as the most badass Sergeant in the Haloverse? Not Excited #3 Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2
There are only three reasons I'm not excited for Modern Warfare 2. One, I played way too much COD4 and W@W. Two, the current COD multiplayer engine has gotten old fast for me. I really don't want to simply grind through another 55-65 levels again earning the same perks. Three, I think the success of COD4's single player campaign was partially fueled by how “new” the game ways. In other words, COD4's campaign was Call of Duty in a totally different light we had never seen the franchise in before and, even though it was without a doubt an amazing campaign, it will be extremely hard to recreate the awesomeness that was COD4. Excited #3 Bayonetta
Hot babe with sexy librarian glasses who gets almost totally naked while doing over the top attacks? Sounds like my kinda game. Wait, it comes from the guy who gave birth to the Devil May Cry franchise? Fuck yeah, count me in! While my pal Trev says that Bayonetta is what Devil May Cry would be without Capcom sticking their nose into things, I politely disagree and say that's a crock of bullcrap. But that doesn't stop me from me from getting totally worked up about Bayonetta? No. Does it look perhaps a little too much like a Devil May Cry clone? Yeah, probably. But I eat Devil May Cry titles for breakfast and I'll gladly buy a re-skinned DMC if it comes from the same lineage. UPDATE: The internet has informed me that the North America release for Bayonetta got pushed to January of 2010. Well, goddammit the internet just broke my whole combo here. But considering January 2010 is pretty damn close to 2009, and I'm a lazy bastard who doesn't want to update all of this, it's staying here! Not Excited #2 New Super Mario Bros. Wii
In my opinion, the “New” at the start of this title means it's geared for a new audience of Super Mario fans. A.K.A. people who've never touched a Mario game before. I'm happy that the Koopa Kids are finally back because they were some of the best additions to the Mario franchise ever, but as a veteran of the franchise who grinded through the old school Mario games back on the NES I just can't bring myself to play a much easier game bearing the same title as the original classic. Excited #2 Batman Arkham Asylum
From everything I've seen and played in regards to this game, Arkham Asylum really looks like it's doing everything as right as it can be. Batman fights exactly like he should fight, like a kick ass ninja, and has all of the proper stealth elements that make Batman everything Sam Fisher wishes he was. Throw in Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill from Batman: The Animated Series (the best comic-to-cartoon ever) and this game really makes me happy to be a video gamer. And for random fun here's a video of Kevin Conroy's Bruce Wayne voice guest appearing on Matlock. Not Excited #1 Final Fantasy XIII
Ironic that I'm excited about one Final Fantasy but another Final Fantasy tops the list of games I'm not excited for, isn't it? I was excited about this title, tried to stay excited about this title, and now I'm ultimately not excited about FF13 at all. Perhaps it's the fact that the game's been in development for way too long, perhaps it's my stubborn fanboy pouting and wishing they'd let some of their crew go free and remake FF7 (you'd think FF7 selling like hotcake on PSN would finally give them the idea), or perhaps I just am not keen on the idea of this installment having more then one game come out at the same time. I, personally, am also not very giddy about SquareEnix seemingly trying to plug this game as literally “The Next Final Fantasy 7” to the point where one of the developers literally called one of the Versus XIII characters a darker silver haired Cloud Strife. Or who knows, maybe I'm just not that into the Final Fantasy series that much anymore. Excited #1 Uncharted 2: Among Thieves
In my opinion Uncharted: Drake's Fortune is the best game of this console generation. I will argue it's better then Fallout 3, Grand Theft Auto 4, and any other GOTY candidate of the last few years. Now Uncharted 2 looks better, which I find somehow impossible to believe and even has multiplayer where I can run and gun as Sully, the most awesome guy with a mustache ever (sorry Old Snake). There isn't much from the Uncharted formula that needs to be tweaked at all and from everything I've seen it really doesn't look like they've messed with anything that worked. Count me on board for a day one purchase of Among Thieves.

I'm with you on Spirit Tracks, even though we'll get crucified on Dtoid for not liking it, because this is a "wind waker" community. As far as Dissidia goes, prepare to be amazed: I loved what I played of it at E3. If I had a PSP this might be my "must have" this year for it.
Your "not excited" result for Brutal Legend irks me. I know you'll like it; just give it a chance. The demo I tested was very simple, yet very fun. If you like ANY Jack Black movies at all, you'll be laughing out loud for hours.
Your excitement for ODST and non-like of MW2 also astounds me. ODST will just be the same shit (albeit good), and MW2 will expand on the current perk/XP system and make it worth playing day in and day out: I know you'll buy it.
I also share your non-enthusiasm over New SMB, because after playing it, it felt like the summation of a dumbed down casual Mario, without the fun (just my opinion). 4 player gameplay also sounds good on paper, but actually is a cluster fuck, so it loses a lot of luster for me.
In terms of #2, my prediction is to "brace yourself to be disappointed by Batman".
As far as #1 goes, very classy choice: I personally did not enjoy Uncharted 1 very much at all. Fighting butt pirate after butt pirate only to be lamed with a horribly flat villain (then uber surprise lame villain!) and a horrible conclusion was very lackluster. It's a shame for me, because the game was SO damn solid. I think Uncharted 2 will improve upon the game's positives and create a truly universally accepted title.
My predictions for this blog:
*STFU Brutal Legend will be the best game ever
*Wind Waker>Ocarina of Time so fuck you
*OMG Halo fanboy COD is 1,000 times better
Then just ignore the blog and move along instead of being a fuck nut. There's a lot of people who don't care about other games people are excited for either, but they don't tell them to stop. Isn't this the whole point of what a blog is? Dumbass.
(*Thinks Wry is pissed cuz I don't care about Brutal Legend, and snickers*)
If MW2 expands on the system and builds upon things, and isn't just Modern Warfare 1.5 then it will definitely be a first day purchase for me. I'll go ahead and say that behind Uncharted, Modern Warfare is probably one of the other best spawns of this generation.
In regards to Brutal Legend, my dislike for it is pretty much entirely due to overhype for the game. Much like how some people absolutely hate Halo just because it's super popular, the same effect has irked me for Brutal Legend. However I am going to give the game the benefit of a rental and make up my mind from there, I usually leave my mind open and give something a chance.
I'd also like to know exactly what you didn't like about Batman? Did you play something that was more then just the combat room setup that a lot of Gamestops had set up?
Jesus Christ, you sound like a whiner. The only one that doesn't sound like it is your entry on Call of Duty.
Whatever dude, if you dont want to hear why someone isn't excited about something or doesn't care about something you've pretty much said that you don't care about 80% of the blogs on this site. Because you know what all of those blogs are? Opinions.
Who's the whiner here, the guy who politely says "This is a game I'm not really excited for, and here's why" or the person who goes "this is fucking lame I don't like it don't post this *cry* *cry*". Sorry Wry, but I think I hear the Whambulance coming for you.
Well, I'll admit I wrote this kind of spur-of-the-moment while eating pizza and watching my Milwaukee Brewers get their asses handed to them otherwise I probably would have put more detail into my explanations. Normally I'm more detailed then what I normally did on this blog, but I just wasn't in a very long-winded mood today.
Oh no you didn't.
X-Men: Origins, Star Wars: Force Unleashed, Ghostbusters. All of them had tons of hype and all of them were just good fanservice with sub-par gameplay. It's not a crime to like these games, but the general consensus has been they didn't live up to what they were being made out to be. What's the use in getting our hopes up at this point?
I'll also say it's ironic that hype is a reason you've been reluctant toward Brutal Legend, but all these licensed games get hyped up the ass. Hype sucks ass, and I only condone it in Brutal Legend's case because Double Fine Productions could actually use a financially successful game for once.
Even he doesn't truly have control of it.
I know from experience that hype can ruin things sometimes, so I can understand his feelings on Brutal Legend, even though I'm excited for it myself.
Make sure you do give it a fair chance eventually.
I agree and disagree with a few others but am lazy and feel no need to go into detail.
I know you just joined the blogs recently but this is what SepirothX does. A lot of his blogs are very negative and opinionated, but I've come to accept that because often times he says things that others are afraid to (which is a reason why I like Kyo).
I think you'll get used to it.
@SepirothX
I played the first 30 or so minutes of the game at E3. I didn't think it was all that, and the combat system got very repetitive. I should also note: ripping grates off walls is a fucking QTE. I think you'll find that while you're disappointed with the actual gameplay, you'll LOVE the fan-service. My prediction is: you'll be enthralled for a week, then want to trade it in.
@Scary
I'm glad you didn't see his "Kefka sucks" blog :D
With that said, I do have to agree with you about Uncharted being the best game of this console generation (so far). It's the only game I enjoyed so much that I beat and replayed within the same week. The whole game was fun to play and had enough personality to turn flat villains into likable characters. I'm probably one of the very few people who likes Eddy Raja enough to consider him their favorite character in the game. I was actually a bit sad/disappointed after what happened to him because I would have loved to see his rivalry with Drake be expanded upon.
Usually I'm on the same boat as you with licensed games, while I did have fun with Origins it at the same time was nothing near revolutionary and Ghostbusters was a good-but-not-great game. I guess the Gamestop demo I played really just left a great impression on me, because I couldn't put the game down and everything I've been able to see-but-not-touch looks pretty good. Here's to hoping Arkham Asylum is one of those rare gems like Escape From Butcher Bay... and not another Force Unleashed.
It's about to get hot up in this piece.
I liked Eddy Raja, but then again I only liked him and Drake. I thought Sully was a walking stereotype (nothing special), the girl (I don't want to remember her name) was particularly awful, and the game's two villains (worst villain reveal ever) were laughable.
...Seriously though, not looking forward to an unreleased game because Activision sued them and it's too hyped? Surely you can see how retarded that seems. Besides, it's good that it's getting hyped by EA as opposed to the usual regurgitations like *yawn* Madden or Need For Speed.
I don't know SephirothX well so this isn't necessarily directed at him, but a negative outlook doesn't equate to a rational outlook. In fact, a general negative outlook can rather skew a person's views. I'd say especially so when negativity spawns from not accepting something for what it is, instead of what you want it to be. That's my very problem with reviewers and the reason I tried creating Wryviews.
I will admit, my reasons for not liking Brutal Legend (although founded) are kind of on the stupid side. I'm more or less just sick of hearing about the game and would much rather just have the game be out already.
My blogs are also usually riddled with some sarcasm and humor here and there
Uncharted 2 is definitely my most anticipated game of the year.
For real, legitimate reviews, I agree with you. On my website, I've dealt with a few negative reviewers, and I've restricted their ability to cover games if they can't look at them in an objective manner: this is one of the reasons we were accepted into Metacritic recently <3
But this? This is just one man's blog. Often times even without reason, SepirothX will tend to be right a lot of the time in terms of derailing a hype train. Plus, he's actually a great guy once you get to know him.
In short, he's the kind of person that tells you to "watch out for Spore".
I wrote about it before, but the hype train for Prototype and X-Men: Origins was the same too. All the same taglines. The marketing was almost interchangeable.
After Activision decided to be jerks (like thats new), all of a sudden everyone seemed to regard it as the greatest game ever even thought of that we possibly would not get to play. The game didnt change a bit, but the media went nuts. And some of us get sick of it. I still look forward to the game, it looks like some fun, but I'm not goin to a midnight launch or whatever.
In regards to the rest of this list... I cant think of anything wrong with it. I'm not particularly excited for FF XIII, I'm sure I'm gonna love it when it gets here... WHEN IT FRICKIN GETS HERE. Dissidia, on the other hand, is balls-to-the-wall awesome, cant wait for that.
Modern Warfare 2 just went up a notch today, with the trailer showing the new kill-streak system, but I still wouldnt say I'm excited. Not yet.
No mention of Borderlands? I'm pretty excited about that, I'm almost skeptical of how good it looks.
As for Bayonetta, didn't that wave bye-bye to 2009 as well?
I enjoyed the blog.
The one's I disagree with are: I'm excited for MW2 and FF13, and not excited for Halo or Splinter Cell.
I loved every single SC game, but not this one, it looks really bad IMHO, and is taking away everything that makes it Splinter Cell. but I guess they had to make it shit or change it some day.
*Thinks* I don't think it did...
*Checks internet. Wikipedia lists it as North America - Jan. 2010*
FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK
Funny you call ODST the same shit when CoD2 doesn't look that much different, hell any CoD game isn't that much different from other, the return of the return perk system alone guarantees the game will be unbalanced from day 1, not to mention the kill streak rewards.
ODST probably will be more of the same and so will CoD.
Also much in the same vein you say "this is a Wind Waker community" this is also a "RAGH HALO SUCKS" community, I've honestly yet to see a single argument against Halo in this community that made sense, its just the same tired cliches "Halo's community sucks, is played by fratboys, etc, etc"
From your list, I agree with Spirit Tracks, stylus only for me means never gonna play it, ever, even if I'm paid to do it.
Agreed with CoD, the grenade spam is ridiculous in Modern warfare and they've made no mention of fixing this, the perk and level system benefit the people who play the game 24/7 while most casual players are left in the dust and get frustrated over getting wrecked with people with better perks and guns, a game shouldn't become my job just to keep up with a bunch of assholes with to much free time on their hands, I've been against the perk garbage since I played the game and I can't believe they brought it back.
I'm excited from everything else on your list though, cept for Uncharted but that's cause I don't have a PS3.
And martyrdom is retarded, WTF are they shitting a live nade when they die?
Another thing, I think Bayonetta is actually hurting the industry in some ways. While I am far from believing in feminist ideologies I think the whole purpose of Baynettas hype is the fact that it is one of the very few games that wants the reputation of being on the brink of soft core porn. Sure shes suppose to be a strong femme fantal heroine (that might be the drug, dont know if there spelt the same) the fact that she strips down naked and the camera is placed at a certain angle so you just miss seeing a bit of her klit, is defeating the entire purpose of having a strong female lead character. Bayonetta isn't as bad ass as others think, she is a brainless eye candy, simply an object and not a human being. A perfect example, Megan Fox in Transformers.
Hmm I should write a blog about this subject....no one would probably read it though :(
Arkham Asylum! Can't wait...
