Name: Damon R. Nagy
a.k.a.: Sentry, Jigglypuff, Jam
Blurb:
Damon is a twenty-something year-old manthing what currently "manages" an independently-owned games shoppe ("Game On!") in Denver, CO. He's entertained delusions of intelligence and relevance his entire life, and hopes to someday be recognized as a pundit in several fields, though his insatiable, insufferable ego will likely forever demand more. As it stands, the store he works at cannot afford to pay him, and as such his current gaming experiences are limited to those used titles that come through the store itself, or those rare occasions when his friends should happen to purchase something that he'd also like to play.
This fellow is arrogant, egocentric, narcissistic, and riddled with insecurities, anxieties, and contradictions, but occasionally - just every so often - manages to be a pretty okay, kinda' nice guy. A bit off-putting at first, but if you give him a chance he might just grow on you.
Also, he's very pleased to meet you.

If you like blogging that's great, but just try to keep it to one post a day please.
Besides which, if YOU have a problem with it, just say so. Otherwise let the community speak for themselves.
Thank you for your advice.
Anyway I just hope that those arcade machines either got a good play through from MJ himself or his kids, otherwise it would be a waste kind of. Nice find though :]
Welcome to dtoid. <3
Also, I'm one of those in the community who frowns upon posting multiple blogs unless they are really great reads that just couldn't have waited another day. This was not such a blog.
That said, I don't see the issue, here, good blogs, good content and really its just the same group of guys who have a problem with more than one blog a day(might I add they are spaced out) so just ignore them and post to your hearts content.
If Niero wanted us to post one blog a day he would have made a one blog a day limit, till he does that I urge anyone that wants to say something to post away as long as the blog has content of course.
Keep up the good work Sentry.
I'm not a journalist and I'm not earning a paycheck, so I don't have the responsibility to be the most cutting edge, investigative reporter. The Fez bit was an honest slip-up. I've had a bit of a busy weekend and missed the fact that it was covered already. I did, however, run a quick search to see if Dtoid had done anything on it because I was SURPRISED that it wasn't picked up, and though I should've done a bit more digging, nothing initially turned up.
My mistake. I apologize.
Besides which, I've been looking for an excuse to say a few words on Fez anyways. I won't be taking down the post because I additionally wrote some small amount on my personal feelings regarding process, while also mentioning those two development articles, which might not be much but is enough for me to care about and feel some small degree of relevance for a personal blog.
Blogs are supposed to be about commentary, editorial, and expression, whereas forums are about conversation, so if I should choose to write about something HERE instead of THERE, that's bloody well my perogative and you can simply choose not to read.
I've been watching this site for a while now and, as much trouble as it might get me in, I'm afraid I'm not prepared to play by ALL of the unwritten rules of this crowd. Many of you seem an awfully judgmental lot, and if that makes me a pariah, then so be it. People keep "welcoming" me despite the fact that I've been here for months.
There's so much nonsense in so many blogs by so many people that care less than I care, and every time I do write something, it's an honest effort to TRY to do better and learn a thing or two. Why on earth should you choose to be critical of that?
Chrono - I appreciate what you have to say and don't even necessarily disagree, but I'm something of a stubborn fool in situations like this and not likely to run from my slip-ups. Wrong and strong, Fez stays up.
Zodiac - Started off so strong? I started off weak-as-hell several months ago, with crappy monthly musings that I tried to write for the sake of writing anything at all, poorly stretching ill-thought-out ideas to fit the current theme. When something actually does come along that gets my fingers moving, I'm going to do my damnedest to put it to paper (so to speak), regardless of how much of the community might care. Of course I'll try to not be completely irrelevant or redundant. Of course I'll try to not be a complete bore and an affront to your eyes. But if there's anything that this website is about, it's encouraging people to write those things related to gaming that interest THEM, whether or not you personally find it the greatest thing ever.
Most of us are NOT the greatest thing ever. But that's okay, because we ARE supposed to be friends, not petty and critical. You wrote about your birthday, for crying out loud, which some might argue is a "waste" of blog space, or silly. Is it your tenure that's earned you this right? Because, honestly, I would argue that the celebration of your birth's anniversary, the birth of a Dtoid gamer, is absolutely worthy of note. Just as I would argue that my opinions regarding how collector's items are evaluated is worthy of amateur commentary, even if the subject doesn't merit a 3000 word editorial. Even if it does and I'm not capable of it.
So I'd like to ask you and any other pseudo-naysayers who speak half-nice/half-cruel words of criticism, to please be a little more sympathetic to some of the other community members, regardless of how long they've been around or how well you know them.
Honestly I think you're writing is interesting, I just said I was one of the people who didn't like to see multiple blog posts in a single day. You told SilverDragon to let the community speak for itself and I did. I mentioned this being more of a forums thing just because its not really more then "isn't this weird/sad." Which could've been posted in the bar and commented on without bumping other people's posts that they also worked hard on. Since you seem to be all gung-ho about the community being supportive you should be able to appreciate my point here.
Yes there are people who write much worse things then this and seem to get away with it, sorry I'm not in charge of that either. If there would've been more to this then just a paragraph's worth of an idea we likely wouldn't be having this conversation, same as if you had just waited until tomorrow to post this. I fully appreciate well written blogs I just didn't feel like this was something that couldn't wait.
As far as tenure goes, for all I know you have as much or more then I do. So far the only difference in that respect is that I don't freak out when people try to tell me how things are usually done. Feel free to be a maverick if you want, just seems like a waste of time to be all uptight anytime people criticize you.
Your point regarding blog "bumping" is well-taken, but I'd argue that it's not my responsibility nor within my control where a blog happens to be placed in the lineup. That's based solely on time of posting, and short of not posting anything at all (something I'm unwilling to do), I have very little influence over that. That has nothing to do with being supportive or unsupportive of the community as it's every member's responsibility to post their own whatever, whenever they like. I'm not casual about when or what I choose to post, which is all you have a right to ask of me.
As for you exercising your own voice, I certainly don't begrudge you that. I just disagree with much of what you and several others have to say, and I've been wanting to comment on it for some time. It was either do so in the comments area where it was most relevant, or write another blog criticizing the less savory aspects of this community. Which would you prefer?
I'm responding buddy, and I wouldn't confuse uptight with upset. You didn't criticize my writing nor did you respond to anything in the subject of what I wrote about, which is something I welcome in this venue. Rather, you criticized my posting methods which you could just as easily do in a direct message, E-mail, Twitter, or any of the other ways I've made myself accessible to you and everybody else.
Either way, it's obvious that we're coming at this from two different points of view. I'm perfectly happy to let it be.
Incidentally,(and steering the comments back onto an actual topic) do you have any cabinets already or does "lesser aspirations" mean that you just wish you did? It's one of those things I find interesting, but could never get into, myself.
In Denver, once you've got four arcade cabinets you technically qualify as an "amusement" venue or something like that, and require additional licenses, taxes, fees, etc., so we're saving our third spot for a Sega Naomi-fitted cabinet which should allow us to play Marvel vs. Capcom 2, Project Justice, and Guilty Gear XX. Once we find them, of course.
(Don't actually do this, I don't want to be responsible for the substantial legal fees it would result in.)
Also, we keep the booze and broads back there.
Thank you kindly, and I'm sorry.
Yea 2 is generally fine, but 3, especially a few paragraphs would garner a warning out of anyone.
Long story short: anyone but Kyo would say this is a forums post - it pushed multiple well written blogs down the list. That's just how it is. I know you have lots to say, but think about it: do you have 3 blogs every day or 6 months? I'm sure you can save a few, right? And your comment about "coming from two different points of view" in regards to Silver: your view isn't a point of view, the rules state clearly you shouldn't spam multiple blogs.
Nice work, by the way. It's not your fault you didn't understand the pushing down the blogs idea, and it's easy to get defensive about it.
Pokemon Blue 4 Lyfe.
I just wanted to clarify something for you.
None of the users here mean any of this as a slight against you or the quality of your writing.
Considering the length of your retort to completely valid criticisms, it seems like you don't take it very well. On a personal note, I don't take criticism as well as I should, but I'm working on it. I will give you a suggestion though: if you want to stand up to unwritten rules, more power to you, but saying you're "wrong and strong [I'll do what I want no matter what]" isn't the best way to go about things in my opinion. A lot of us are stubborn, but it would be nice to know that it is possible to respect people's opinions.
Once you get to know all of us, you'll understand that no one meant any harm. Chronoswing has a reputation for being very vocal in pointing out failure in blogs, and can be very vicious: that's just how he is, and I understand that. This time, he was VERY sincere and respectful if you compare his comment to other bloggers. Silver is the nicest community member you'll find here: he also meant no harm. Zodiac is also a very active member, and is just looking out for you.
Basically, despite any constructive criticism here, your banner is amazing, your attitude is amazing, and your about me is superb. Just remember that we all have opinions of the contents of certain blogs, and they're just that: simple opinions. You'll fit in amazingly here (I say that because I never noticed your blogs, and all of a sudden you're sprouting up).
"Wrong and strong" is not my approach, but rather part of my explanation. I'm not setting out to be rebellious, nor am I trying to go against the stream. It's not an ego thing, despite the fact that I'll often approach and acknowledge things from an "ego" point of view. It's a qualitative thing. I believe in the things I believe in for the reasons that I believe them, and if somebody is unable to convince me otherwise, then I'm willing to accept the fact that I'll potentially fall in the minority opinion. That's all I mean by that. And also that I'll accept responsibility for and own my screw-ups when I recognize them, such as Fez.
What I said regarding forum versus blog is still my opinion and I've yet to hear an argument against it not having to do with the blog lineup. When I posted my Pokemon Blue send-up, the amount of time I left it in editing meant that it had already been bumped by three newer posts by the time I actually got it up. This, I feel, is the nature of the beast. The Cblog readers seem an avid and responsible bunch and I'm confident that people will find my blog, in time, if the quality is there, and I refuse to hold anybody else responsible for "bumping" my posts, regardless of how much quality I consider theirs to have had. My profile isn't likely to go anywhere (presuming I don't do anything outrageously banworthy), nor are my posts.
It's unfortunate that people are singling out the "Michael Jackson" element of this particular post, as the meat of the thing was a brief criticism about how the value of a video game (or anything, really) can be distorted by the celebrity factor, and MJ served as a current example. I chose not to post it in a forum because this particular opinion wasn't intended for discussion, but rather expression, and I stand by that.
As for how long I take to respond to criticisms, that has more to do with the fact that I care to address every point raised and every additional point that I can think of (even if I've kept my mouth shut in the past), while trying to mind the perspective of those speaking to me. I'm FIERCELY committed to the concept of good argument and debate, which is why I'm often so willing to dig in, whether it personally concerns me or not. If the concept or the idea interests me in any way, then I'll come out guns-a-blazin', for better or for worse.
Yes, of course things will get under my skin, but I have a long history of discerning my emotional response from my intellectual response, and either separating the emotional element out entirely, or utilizing it to fuel my ambition to respond intellectually. Truthfully, I usually want to just mutter "I'm sorry" and go crawl in a hole, as this is more likely to keep me from getting in "trouble", but there are certain ideas I care too much about, such as the dynamics of this community, as well as what criteria a person should use when posting on a site of this nature.
As I come to better know you all, I'm sure my behaviour will adapt somewhat, as there are undoubtedly plenty of things to learn. But seriously folks, my Pokemon blog was done the previous day and is only considered "same day" because of how late I got it up. Prior to yesterday, my bloggings have been sporadic at best, so it's not like I've some history of spamming, and considering some of the loyalties in this community as well as my willingness to discuss my behaviour and opinions, I'd like to be cut a little slack for this fact.
I'm not out to make enemies. There are dozens of things I haven't written, either because I couldn't get the concept fully-formed, the writing just wasn't there, it was no longer newsworthy/relevant, or it'd already been done a hundred times before. I want to write about what interests me, and I'll do my damnedest not to waste anybody's time.
And thank you. Your words mean a lot to me. Both the criticisms and the encouragement. I'd much rather get along with everyone, but if somebody should criticize my methods (something I put a great deal of thought into), you can sure-as-hell bet that I'm going to respond. Sorry, but I don't know any other way.
Cheers.
Hey Sentry, do you write and edit your blogs in the upload window, or do you do in in a seperate program like Word? I strongly recommend doing it in a seperate program like Word. Then when you are done you can simply copy and paste it into the upload window, quickly upload any pictures or videos you have, and post it. If you do this you will immediately post at the top of the front page. Just a little tip. :-)
"I'm FIERCELY committed to the concept of good argument and debate, which is why I'm often so willing to dig in"
I'm the same way - and I talk too much. We are one and the same!
For writing/editing, a lot of Dtoiders use a free notepad extension called Notetab. You should check it out.
