Headline: Gaming Mayor?
SenorCalavera | 2:09 AM on 05.29.2008 5 comments

So I'm browsing the real news in the world (there is news beyond game news?), and
apparently this guy makes headlines. Apparently, he's a 19 year old college freshman who
just beat out the current three termed, 70 year old dude for mayor of Muskogee, Oklahoma
(wherever that is I'm sure none of you care). Kudos to him and all, but in the typical labeling
the media they've decided to headline this "19 year-old gamer becomes mayor of Oklahoma
town" and go on to name him the first ever self proclaimed (as if others should be shameful of
it) gamer to govern a city in America.

While there's nothing bad with this milestone (if you would even call it that) I find it fairly
insignificant. We've had gamers as far up as governors and congressmen, and mayors have
little to no say over any sort of video game legislation, so the actual effect of his time in office
as a gamer does not really matter, it's just a random fact that the media got a kick out of and
decided to use the term gamer since it tends to get a rise of people (gamer? I'm one of
those). Then again, maybe this is a clear sign that we've taken over as the general public.

Yup, if he were older, they probably wouldn't have mentioned it; someone needs to start distributing flyers to tell people the average gamer is now over 30 years old.

As my first act I will rename this street Pong lane.

Yeah, lame headline - like "gamer" is the direct antithesis of anything dealing with responsibility or being a political figure.

Good for this dude. Hopefully he doesn't fuck up big time, which would give Jack Thompson a reason to crawl out from under his rock with more video game criticism.
