Why trading on the dtoid forums is awesome
ScottyG | 10:21 AM on 07.16.2009 27 comments

Excuse me looking like shit. I'm very tired. :(

This is the tale of a video game. A great video game that gave me many happy memories with my Game Boy.

A video game that sadly has been missing for about 12 years.

You see, my friend's mom has a rather nasty habit of going into his room when he's out and cleaning, which seems to mean throwing things she arbitrarily decides is trash. This happened to, amongst other things, my Mega Man V cartridge. Unfortunately this game is somewhat rare and fairly pricey to acquire these days. Something got me thinking about this recently.

Thankfully, my stupor was interrupted by a knock at the door.

I take a few seconds to compose myself, and greet the visitor.

Why, it's my good friend Black Yoshi! Stopping in to visit I suppose between one of his trips. Apparently he ran into my mailman, and after eating him noticed there was a package for me so he figured he'd bring it up. Always happy to get mail, I invite him in and offer him a drink.

Apparently the package is from Funktastic, who I've been doing some trading with. I actually completely forgot about this package, and wonder what he sent me...

OMFGWTFBBQ!! PAPER!!! I LOVE PAPER!!! :D :D :D

Wait... there's MORE under the paper!

Quite a bit more!

Wait... what's this?

...

I'm completely at a loss for words. Black Yoshi isn't really the cuddling type (or at he pretends he isn't), so while he went out onto my balcony...

... I dug out my GBA and proceeded to catch up on all those years without this game.

...

After a while I figured I should take a look at what else I got. In addition to Mega Man V, I traded with the legendary Funktastic for a copy of Super Metroid and GTA: Chinatown Wars. Being the awesome person he is though, there's a few freebies included.

First up is a foam Prinny vitamin pill.

Next is a Street Fighter IV headband.

And finally is a Little Big Planet... ball? Erm... what is this thing?

Oh, it's a tshirt! Damn, they really packed it in there!

So yeah, massive <3 to Funktastic for the trades, and to Black Yoshi for helping bring them to me. :D

That's awesome! So glad you were able to get some pretty great stuff, and nice pics to tell the story! Damn, I'd love to find that old Looney Tunes game for the Gameboy. I don't even remember what it was called. Then again, I don't actually have a Gameboy anymore.

So, what did you give up in order to secure this awesome score?
ScottyG's Destructoid Blog
I gave up my Super Scope, Battle Clash, and Metal Combat.

I know I'll regret giving those away, but the Super Scope doesn't work on new tvs and I'm certainly not going to get a CRT again. So it's some games that may be awesome but I can never play again, for one I've wanted to get back for years and a few other good ones. :)

This blog is the jam. I can never get enough photocomics.

In fact, start making photocomics!

Oh, and congraturations on the awesome haul and schwag. I'm pretty sure I'm not personally familiar with Funktastics, but he sounds insanely terrific.

(Just saw your new comment.)

If ever another Super Scope should come through the store (we're keeping the one we have for display/awesome purposes), and I have any pocket change, I'll see what I can do about grabbing it for you.

I agree, I've done a few trades myself and I've very happy.

Funktastic in particular is amazing, he will flat out refuse to trade if he feels you're getting the short of the end stick and will go above and beyond anything I've ever seen to make you happy., he's awesome.

I hope he enjoys my copy of Guardian Heroes and the freebies I sent.

Awesome story there. And the pictures helped keep my brain from melting.

Also, paper FTW.

Very nice, man. You look genuinely happy to be reunited with your long-lost Mega Man. I need to check out that part of the forums.

Kauza: Looney Tunes, Looney Tunes: Back in Action, or Martian Revenge? That's what my half-assed searching turned up, but I'm sure there are a billion Looney Tunes games out there.

These trading stories are so heart-warming. I feel I should percolate a cup of Folgers and snuggle up in a toasty bath robe while reading these.

I can vouch for Funk being an AWESOME trader: he sent me a free Little Big Planet shirt, and showed me pictures of how his Ico case looked! WoW!

Haha I'm glad you were able to use the trade system to bring you joy. These pictures are pretty epic.

It's great to hear that everyone's enjoying the trading forums so much... but there's really not much opportunity for people who don't want to part with their current games...

I have a very small collection of games (though it's recently grown), but I got the games I have because I want to keep them...

Maybe I can get one or two of the games I'm looking for with the (very small) handful of games I am willing to part with...
kauza's Destructoid Blog
@Char: I found it, it was the original SunSoft Looney Tunes game. I can hardly find any information about the game at all, though! Did find this youtube vid

Hahaha! Glad you liked it and all mate. You should also know that you're the first person, and probably the only (unless WRY GUY and I get going) that has received a game of mine that WAS in my collection, but I took out and traded, aka, it was NOT a double! =O Hahaha! Also, SYLPHX says that you should praise me less, so I have less of a "following" and all!

I'm also very happy to hear you loved the paper and little bonuses and such. ^_^

That's awesome...as soon as I get back to the US I'm hitting up that trade forum. Maybe one man's trash is another's treasure...especially in the case of your friend's mom.
Funktastic's Destructoid Blog
BALLS! I actually JUST eBay'd Mega Man V to see how much it was worth and all mate, and then it looks like you weren't lying about it being RARE and PRICEY! o_O Hahaha! Once again, glad you're super happy about it and all, and my theory is another will pass through Cash Converters for me to pick up! ^_^

haha that picture of you taking the paper out of the box is classic!

How's the UK/EU dtoid trading scene?
I want to experience Yoshi hugging happiness too.

At the moment pretty much all of my few local friends who actually play games are dinks who now spend all of their time playing WoW. So, feel free to look me up and send an invite to play games. ^_^

Hello! <3

Bit about me. I've been a gamer for the most of my life. When I was seven and waiting for my parents to pick me up from piano lessons, the teacher's two sons showed me Super Mario Bros 2. Needless to say I never learned to play the piano very well...

I've flip-flopped several times between consoles and PCs. I generally love non-generic FPS games, puzzlers (Tetris is probably my favourite game of all time) and platformers of all shapes and sizes. I tolerate RPGs, but usually don't bother because I just don't have the time to invest in them.

I'm one of those freaks that regard FF7 and Ocarina of Time as merely average. That might be partly because I'm biased against the first round of 3D games that generally looked and played like crap compared to the 2d games at the time (during that generation I was a PC gamer, where they actually could do decent 3D at the time). By no means are they bad games, but plenty of games have done just as well and actually looked good in the process.

Yeah yeah, graphics aren't everything. But as important as gameplay is, looks still matter. It doesn't have to be the best looking thing around, but it at least has to be passable.

I tried to be a collector for awhile, but realized there was no market where I lived and gave that up. Currently I have an NES, SNES, GameBoy/GameBoy Colour/GameBoy Advance SP, DS, a 360, and of course my lovely gaming PC. ^_^
