Twenty-Five years ago today the original Metroid was released on the Famicom Disk System in Japan. This would be the introduction to a beloved video game series very near and dear to many gamers hearts. I haven't seen much coverage on this today so I've decided to compose a blog to commemorate this milestone in Samus's history.

My first experience with Metroid was when my brother's friend brought over Prime. I was instantly hooked, the start up screen was amazing it was a close up of some organic matter (presumably a Metroid), and then the menu theme begins to play, which is one of my favorite songs of all time. I started the game and was instantly immersed into the dark ambient universe. I was thrust into a mysterious planet without being given any explanation of what was going on, I entered the facilities and saw the corpses of space pirates littering the floors, I pursued further to face off against the Parasite Queen and then I died. Rules being that when you died you have to switch the controller I then passed it to my brother's friend who took over from that point on. I had never experience anything like that before. The atmosphere it was just so unique.I just kind of stared at the T.V. screen in awe as my brother's friend proceeded to play.

When Christmas came later that year I asked my sister for a copy of Metroid Fusion. I didn't really know anything about the game, I just knew that it had the name Metroid and was hoping that would compensate for my inability to play Metroid Prime because I didn't have a gamecube. Whenever I'm asked what my favorite game of all time is I always reply Metroid Fusion, that game -- I love it to tears. Truthfully I can't pin down just one game that is special to me, because there are far too many, but It was Metroid Fusion that showed me that games could be more than just fun, and for that the game is very precious to me. I was twelve at the time and up until that point I was playing video games just for the game play. It never really occurred to me that video games could be more. I had played games that took place in space before, but Metroid Fusion was the first one that truly felt like I was in outer space. Years passed and I had quickly started to gobble up everything Metroid that I could find, it wasn't until 2009 that I got my hands on a copy of Metroid Prime Trilogy.

Now that I had experienced 2D Metroid at it's finest I finally made the plunge to 3D that many had made 7 years earlier. I loved it. The game is brilliant. It took everything that made previous Metroid titles great, and expanded upon them making the universe even more immersive. The way that narrative unfolds is nothing short of genius. Instead of the story being revealed through traditional cut scenes, you have to piece it together yourself from stolen reports, journals from the deceased, and database hacking. This is what propelled the game into being a highly psychological journey. No other game has managed to envelop me in the same way the original Metroid Prime has. The wonderful atmosphere that this game has is one of beauty, fear, wonder, and uncertainty.

Metroid is my favorite video game series of all time, which is not something I say lightly. Out of the over 200 games I've played in my lifetime (yes I've counted) no other game series has captivated me the same way that Metroid has. I've since beaten every single Metroid game except Return of Samus (which I will remedy once it hits the 3DS eShop) and Corruption (which I've been putting off because it's the last major Metroid game I haven't played yet and I'm sad to not have anything else to look forward to). A mix of iconic music, unrivaled atmosphere, fantastic art direction, inventive exploration aspects and so much more is what makes this series special to millions. Thank you for the amazing twenty-five years let's hope to make it an even fifty.

I've actually only played the original Metroid and Super Metroid, but they were both fantastic! I really need to play Metroid Prime at some point.

Happy anniversary, Samus!
Finally, some Metroid love. I had just remembered that yesterday was the 25th Anniversary so I came in here to see if anyone mentioned anything. I was very happy to see that you did.
So yeah, awesome blog. Reminds me of the first time I played Prime on the GameCube I got for my birthday. Metroid holds such a special place in my heart. <3
Also, I want that header you used. :3
Is it Samus's birthday again? Thanks for reminding me, and for the great love letter to a great series.

Like bbain, I've only played the earliest entries - Metroid, Super Metroid, and I also played Return of Samus on the original Game Boy. I'll have to try Prime some day.
Neat! I love prime too! It didn't introduce me to the series but I regard it as one of the best in the series , along with prime 2. And as you I also tend to love the menu music, the one from no:2 is also freaking amazing, I was imersed like I had never been before the first time I played it and when I first entered the labs in the snow area I had to pause the game and tell myself , woah take a deep breath, it's only a game , right? I would also say that it's probably my favorite video game series. Fusion had a neat atmosphere, I still freak out when I hear that SAX is near ^^ Oh Samus , Happy B day! And thanks Scissors for a great blog!
Oh and here is the prime 2 theme if anyone want's to listen to it , it's eargasmic! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ZmFAzHCSJY&feature=related
I'd do an all game Metroid run sometime in the future, similar to the one I'm doing now with Zelda.

I think I have every main Metroid game outside of the original, which is $5 on VC.
My relationship with this series started with Metroid Prime 3 and I've been madly in love ever since. I'm playing through Super Metroid for the first time right now as a sort of celebration for her 25th anniversary, and I'm having a blast.

Happy Birthday Samus!
Super Metroid and Metroid Prime are still two of the greatest games I've ever had the pleasure of experiencing. They alone are enough to make the series one of the all time greats.
@ bbain & fulldamage

I highly recommend the Prime series. You can tell that the staff at Retro Studios loves the series. It's a perfect transition to 3D everything that makes Metroid great is there, except screw attack (but they added that in the 2nd game) and speed booster. The scanning system is amazing it adds a whole layer of immersion into the series. It's fascinating to learn about the creatures, and to read the space pirate reports.

@Brett Zeidler
I'm glad you enjoyed it. I wish I had fleshed this out more but I was helping my sister move out. I didn't see any mention of Metroid's 25th on Dtoid so I decided to write a blog quickly before the day was over. I got the header from a google search, the person said they made it for a friend on their birthday.

@Kaggen
I love the Prime 2 music too. I really like Echoes, I know some where turned off by it's high difficulty, but I loved that about it. Those boss fights were intense. I did alot of pausing too I would step back put down the controller and just say holy crap. No other series immerses me the same way as Metroid. I remember in Metroid Prime 1 that part where the power turns off and you have to face space pirates in the dark, that was so freaking intense. I actually spend alot of time listening to Metroid music, it's one of my favorite things about the series. I really like the theme to Zero Mission (which is a remake of the original tune) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UnnhXBfngs0

@Magnalon
Metroid is a great series to speed run, I've speed ran Fusion a few times. It makes it very challenging because you're not picking up all the upgrades, which makes seeing the ending screen even more rewarding.

@Wolfy-Boey
Super Metroid rocks that game did so much for the series. I read that the reason there was never a Metroid 64 was because after they started developing it the team working on it said it would never be as good as Super Metroid so they decided to scrap the project. Also check this out it's Super Metroid songs remixed with a genesis sound chip, ear bliss. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qFMsrHCFXj0&list=FLKXmB8Ts0qVA&index=24

@jjjenigma
Very true both of those games are amazing and are definitely highlights of the series.
Oh Metroid how I love thee! Except not on the Wii! Alright, it wasn't that bad. There were only a few parts that frustrated the heck out of me. ;) Very good write up on a awesome game series! Didn't realize it was the 25th anniversary...I'll go back to my rocking chair now. :/
I have a confession to make...

I've never really gotten into Metroid (GASP). I have that collector's edition on the Wii so maybe I should give it a try...
Only played the first two to completion (and a fair amount of Prime). Still, I can safely say this is one of our truly great series!

Thanks!
@Scissors Yeah I also enjoyed that prime 2 was so god darn daunting and hard, it fitted it's dark themes and made the event of entering the dark world such a huge decision, I'ts one of my favorite ones to replay since it's pretty hard and it's fairly long too if you compare it to the first one .
