Don Cheadle: War Machine
ScanCase | 12:03 PM on 10.14.2008 16 comments

Well the big news of the day in at leas my world is the fact that Don Cheadle has been signed on to play War Machine in the next Iron Man film. A role that was held by Terrance Howard in the last film in which I thought he played the role perfectly.

The first Iron Man film was a lot of fun to watch and did a good job in setting up the Avengers film and Terrance Howard made a great James Rhodes. He looked like a military man and someone that could eventually fill one of the Stark armours which of course was hinted at in the first film. On top of the Favreau has already said that War Machine would play a bigger part in the next film. Which brings up the question why change the actors?

Don Cheadle is undeniable a great actor and is one of those human activists that I don't mind so much unlike Tim Robbins, but can he be War Machine. Cheadle has never looked like a military man to me and doesn't have the stature that the character Rhodes has in nearly all of his incarnations. I just don't like the fact their changing actors in the middle of two films that are anchoring the Marvel movie studio's.

Am I the only one who thought that the Iron Man movie was shallow and boring?

@messer Yes.

I hated Terrance Howard in Iron Man. Just because he's been in so many lame movies. He didn't quite fit in with all the great actors Iron Man had. I agree about Cheadle though, can't quite see him in that role but we'll have to wait and see

Howard was very good as Rhodes. I don't like the fact that they changed actors. That was my one problem with Dark Knight. Changing Holmes for that beast, Gyllenhall (or however you spell it). Cheadle is a good actor, but Howard is already War Machine in my subconscious, so I will like Iron Man 2 a little bit less.

Iron Man wasn't that good, and this movie will be even worse.

I heard a rumor that they wanted Cheadle for the first movie but maybe due to budgeting they couldn't afford him. But that won't be the case this time. I agree Howard was good as Rhodes, and changing actors now seems weird. But I think Cheadle is a better actor and will do well if you can get past the fact they changed actors on us.

THIS.
IS.
BULLSHIT.
Read this news piece this morning, and I've been angry all day. Cheadle isn't right for the role at all. TERRANCE!!! COME BACK!!!

As long as Robert Downey Jr. is in it, then I'm sold.

@ Messer

Blasphemy!

@ Pendelton21

Shit like this happens all the time in Hollywood. I share your sentiment though, I thought Terrance Howards was a good fit for Rhodes.
Messer's Destructoid Blog
Yeah, the movie had no cerebral stimulation at all.

Iron Man was such a crappy movie. I'm willing to blame it on the fact that it was an origin story.

When it comes to Iron Man, I don't believe in opinions. It was awesome. If you didn't like it, you're wrong and I'd recommend consulting your family physician and begin undergoing treatment as soon as possible.

Howard was okay as Rhodes. Cheadle's a good actor, but I have a hard time seeing him as Rhodes. I always pictured the character as being a bit tougher-looking, like in the old animated series.

Did we watch the same movie? Iron Man was great. It turned into two guys in giant robot suits fighting each other at the end. How can ANYONE not love that?

@Messer

Go watch something at the fine arts theater then, Iron Man isn't about cerebral stimulation.

AND WHY TERRENCE WHY :(

Terrence Howard is cool and all, but I didn't really have that much of an attachment to him in the first. Switching actors is pretty odd, but that movie will be out in like two three years and by then it would matter even less. Plus Cheadle is cool, so no biggie.

That's rediculous! Terrance Howard was perfect! Why would you let this happen John? WWWWWhhhhhyyyyy?! :(

 about me

Just like everyone else here I'm a twenty something nerd who enjoys video games. It wasn't really until I was about fourteen that I really started getting into games and other mediums. As a kid my folks never bought me video games, let me watch movies, or enjoy tv and "most" music so I lived a terribly dull nonexistence. For years I had been skimming along by sneaking over to friends houses and the occasional visit to my uncles who had an original Famicom. Thankfully that all changed and I've been overdosing on everything I can get my hands on since.

Sadly I'm not rich so as much as I love video games I can only play so many so often. However movies and tv happen to be a little cheaper. I believe that all current mediums in our culture cross reference each other whether it be good or bad. Games influence movies, movies influence tv, tv acknowledges that video games exist every once and a while.

Honestly I really enjoy this community and just want to contribute what I can.
