I can honestly say that video games have not gotten better or worse in the past forever, different, but overall a game that owned your nuts (or vaginal lips?) 20 years ago will still at the very least tickle your balls (lips) today. Apparently Namco, Midway, and countless other companies that may have fallen back in the past few years caught wind of my views, because no matter where I go, lord knows I will find a collection (or remake) of a classic game.
Now, here's a bit of trivia, for you trivia lovers. What makes Q'bert great? Is it the hundreds of oddly-angled platforms he jumps across, cursing and shitting colors? It's probably because I've yet to see him (you might have) on a game collection. Nor have I seen Q'bert Xtreme 2000, and thank god for that, because seeing games such as Asteroids, Breakout, Missle Command, Rally-X, ect. ect. being ported and "reinvented" over and over again makes me sad.
Some of you may enjoy having Pac-Man (by far the guiltiest of the bunch) on your PC, GBA, DS, PSP, N64, or cell-phone, but to me, having this game so widely stretched out takes something away, something you can't quite put your finger on, which is why I refuse to have Pac-Man for anything more than my good ol' NES (you try affording an arcade cabinet).
Even worse than the ports are the remakes, often for "A WHOLE NEW GENERATION!!!",
these games really bite my bag. It seems whenever anything is remade for a new generation, it either means it's going to have sub-par 3d graphics along with five power-ups and level designs that were so sorely (not) missing from whatever they mutated off of.
There are some games that would serve a remake justice, but not as many as there are, and hardly any of the right ones. Someone kidnap Kojima and force him to remake Metal Gear 1 and 2 for PSP with flashy 3d graphics and voice acting (just have Hayter huff something other than rocks and twigs.)

Nostalgia is an easy way to make money these days, which is why we've seen the likes of Transformers and the Turtles make a comeback. Plus it gives us oldies (OK, so I'm only 23, shaddap!) a chance to say to the younglings "They did it better in my day!"
When you think about it no games should really be remade, seeing as there is no reason for it. But it's like RivaOni said about making money. Only it's not that simple. Remakes also help fund other bigger and better projects. Look at SquareSoft. These FF remakes for DS are unecessary but the fans like them, as do I. They are bringing in money, helping to cover the probably insane cost of making Final Fantasy 13. So it's ok in my opinion.
While I'll admit remaking Asteroids is pretty dumb, there's a game or two I'd love to see remade in super HD Resomolutions. (Like Quake I or Sonic CD... Like that'll ever happen. =p)
@WDot,
Or Burning Rangers with high-rez textures and character models that are blockier than LEGO!
I only like remakes when they really remake the game-add new features, fix things, tighten up the graphics, etc. The other thing I like about remakes is, while it does take a little bit away from the original, it gives new gamers who may have missed out on it a chance to play.
I agree that classics sometimes get raped in the process it seems like the Atari games for live are tring to capitolise on the Geometry Wars success and make extreme graphic upgrades to the games and are practically slapped to together. But then there are the exceptions Pacman CE is awesome I think it succeded cause they had involvement from the original maker and it was done right (just the right mix of fancy effects with the classic sprites and interesting new play modes)I know amazing concept.
Now there are some bigger remakes Like Ninja Gaiden that I think are very awesome. And they can keep making Marios as long as they dont start sucking as far as I'm concerned.
Yeah, I hated it when they remade Half Life. Half Life 2 fucking sucked.
