The defining moment of my life so far

Hey everybody, I'm Samit Sarkar, and I'm a 23-year-old lifelong gamer from New York (short answer). What's the long answer, you ask? Well, I'm from a bunch of places, actually: I was born in Calcutta, India, and I moved to the States when I was ten months old. I've lived in New York ever since (Queens until I was eight, and Long Island since then). So I figure that 20+ years of living in and around New York City is enough for me to be able to call myself a New Yorker.

I officially became a Destructoid editor in February 2008, but I've been an avid reader of the site since November 2006 (you may know me from my old nom de guerre, "BrOnXbOmBr21"). On the staff, I'm the lone editor who covers sports games, but you may see me do other things from time to time. If you ever have any questions, concerns, props, or hate mail, please see the "Contact Me" section above for ways to get them to me.

I've been into video games for as long as I can remember. In 1990, when I was four, my parents got me an NES, and I've been hooked ever since. I often tell people that I'll play video games until the day I die, and I truly believe that. So here's my gaming history (date in parentheses is when I got the console):

Nintendo Entertainment System (Christmas 1990)*
Sega Genesis (Christmas 1993)*
Sony PlayStation (Christmas 1997)*
Sony PlayStation 2 (December 27, 2000)
Sony PlayStation 3 (December 31, 2006)
Microsoft Xbox 360 Elite (February 6, 2010)

*I no longer have this console
_______________________________________________

I may not have a crapload of games, but I do have a rather extensive DVD collection. For the full lists, check out my collections at IGN:

My Video Game Collection
My DVD/Blu-ray Collection

As you can see, I'm a big fan of sports games, action games, shooters, and platformers. Some of my favorite games/series, in case you don't feel like going through my entire collection, are: God of War, Grand Theft Auto, Guitar Hero, Madden, and Prince of Persia. Also, though I've never played any prior games in the series at length, I plan to get into the Metal Gear Solid series in this generation.

Finally, I really think that Destructoid is the greatest place on the internet for video game-related news and things like that -- that's why I spend an inordinate amount of time on the site. It provides a unique combination of resources: news, humor, a phenomenal community, humor, a tremendous amount of knowledge pertaining to video games, and finally, humor. Also, cocks.

Oh, one more thing: I'm what people like to call a 'grammarian', and in my case, that also includes spelling. So nothing you see here, in my c-blog, or in my front page posts, should have any such errors (except for internet memes and the like, such as 'I can has c-blog?', etc.) Let me know if you spot a mistake. Also, I generally correct other people's mistakes, and since it's hard to correct someone without coming off as a dick, please don't take offense if I do it to you. It's only constructive criticism, and even if I'm brusque, I mean well.

Where’s the beef? Between Harmonix and the PS3, that’s where
Samit Sarkar | 3:42 AM on 11.20.2007 20 comments

NOOOOOO!

After seeing this story on IGN, an anguished yell nearly escaped my lips (one would indeed have done so, but it was just after three in the morning here on the East Coast, and I had just enough self-control to stop myself). Apparently, Harmonix has decided to give a proverbial giant middle finger to PS3 owners everywhere — or at least, PS3 owners who also have Guitar Hero III for that console (like me). According to IGN, who says that they (and all gamers) were “lead [sic] to believe otherwise,” the Guitar Hero III Les Paul controller DOES NOT WORK with Rock Band.

To quote Gollum, Harmonix is also “tricksy” — and not just with their pre-release media, as IGN mentioned: you can plug in the Les Paul’s wireless USB dongle and sync up the controller with it, and the main menu will recognize your input. The fun ends there, however; if you choose any of the modes, the game asks you to plug in a USB mic to continue. The Les Paul controller can be used as just that, a controller — nothing more — i.e., you can’t actually play the game with it. To those of you who are in my situation and asking how things could get worse, they indeed can. In a final discourteous display of disregard for would-be Rock Band-ers on the PS3, the story notes that the Xbox 360’s wireless Les Paul controller works just fine with the game. Wow. My nuts are severely bruised from the kick that they just received. Now, people like me have no recourse if they want to play this game with four players (and isn’t that the point of the game?), because the bundle only ships with one Fender Stratocaster controller, and the individual instruments won’t be able for purchase separately until sometime next year.

I’m hoping to every god I can think of that this issue will be remedied with a future patch, because as things are, I’m crying myself to sleep tonight. I know this meme is overused, but it’s certainly apropos: I’m a

now.

Why, Harmonix, why???

Wow, that sucks some serious ass. Maybe when Harmonica Hero comes out, they'll reconsider. Till then, the PS3 continues to get screwed, and continues to scare us who don't have one yet, but really want one.

Is this really true? How can this be possible? If so, Harmonix has effectively gutted the PS3 version and turned it into a 3 man show. This is almost unheard of. I would say it's almost the equivalent of Street Fighter 2 on SEGA Genesis, which only had 5 button standard controllers. As anyone who played it can tell you, the game was barely functional without use the purchase of an 8 button controller. The only difference here:

You could've bought an 8 button controller anytime, but now many people will have their Christmas ruined by the lack of available controllers.

@amalgut00:

Again, doing nothing to win the people over. I'm relatively new here, but how bout reading the post first? I mean, nobody here is blaming Sony, they're blaming Harmonix. Get with the program

@kobewan0824: No, I don’t think amalgut00 meant “nobody likes Sony” in a Sony-bashing way; he meant to say something like “This is another example of people not liking Sony”. Thanks for asking people to read the post, though!

They might be able to make a fix for it after the fact, but Harmonix didn't have anything to do with Guitar Hero 3 except make the basic game for Neversoft to reverse-engineer. Activision furthermore has no reason other than goodwill (heh) to make their hardware work with what is now a competitor's product.

And you really should have seen this one coming. There's going to be a lot of useless plastic toys in game stores this holiday season. Meanwhile, GH3 is selling like your mom fresh off the clap.

@JtheYellow: Au contraire, my friend. Of course Harmonix didn’t have anything to do with Guitar Hero III — but this is their fault, not Activision’s. Harmonix made the 360 version of Rock Band with Les Paul support, but omitted that functionality from the PS3 version. That’s a pile of crap, because that means it’s 100% doable — sadly, this seems to be another case of a developer not going the extra mile on PS3 as opposed to 360.

There will be an update to fix this after the fact.

The genesis controller came in 3 and 6 face button configurations. I played a LOT of street fighter 2 on the genesis.

This is really a fscking shame. These developers are just fucking with the PS3 at this point. It's getting a bit ridiculous. I mean Sony must have pissed them off or something... That must be it. No one but Insomniac and Incognito want to put the time and effort into getting the most out of the Cell and RSX. And, now they're just fucking with us with this controller fiasco.

*mind = boggled

Jeez. I used to be derisive of PS3 owners, now I just feel sorry for them. Hopefully a title update will fix this.

Strike 3: Cubs fan.

Luckily I haven't opened mah GH3 that I bought JUST for the extra controller.

I'll give it 20 days or so for a patch, but if not, back to the store it goes. (GH 3 not rock band; I f'n love it.)
