The defining moment of my life so far

Hey everybody, I'm Samit Sarkar, and I'm a 23-year-old lifelong gamer from New York (short answer). What's the long answer, you ask? Well, I'm from a bunch of places, actually: I was born in Calcutta, India, and I moved to the States when I was ten months old. I've lived in New York ever since (Queens until I was eight, and Long Island since then). So I figure that 20+ years of living in and around New York City is enough for me to be able to call myself a New Yorker.

I officially became a Destructoid editor in February 2008, but I've been an avid reader of the site since November 2006 (you may know me from my old nom de guerre, "BrOnXbOmBr21"). On the staff, I'm the lone editor who covers sports games, but you may see me do other things from time to time. If you ever have any questions, concerns, props, or hate mail, please see the "Contact Me" section above for ways to get them to me.

I've been into video games for as long as I can remember. In 1990, when I was four, my parents got me an NES, and I've been hooked ever since. I often tell people that I'll play video games until the day I die, and I truly believe that. So here's my gaming history (date in parentheses is when I got the console):

Nintendo Entertainment System (Christmas 1990)*
Sega Genesis (Christmas 1993)*
Sony PlayStation (Christmas 1997)*
Sony PlayStation 2 (December 27, 2000)
Sony PlayStation 3 (December 31, 2006)
Microsoft Xbox 360 Elite (February 6, 2010)

*I no longer have this console
_______________________________________________

I may not have a crapload of games, but I do have a rather extensive DVD collection. For the full lists, check out my collections at IGN:

My Video Game Collection
My DVD/Blu-ray Collection

As you can see, I'm a big fan of sports games, action games, shooters, and platformers. Some of my favorite games/series, in case you don't feel like going through my entire collection, are: God of War, Grand Theft Auto, Guitar Hero, Madden, and Prince of Persia. Also, though I've never played any prior games in the series at length, I plan to get into the Metal Gear Solid series in this generation.

Finally, I really think that Destructoid is the greatest place on the internet for video game-related news and things like that -- that's why I spend an inordinate amount of time on the site. It provides a unique combination of resources: news, humor, a phenomenal community, humor, a tremendous amount of knowledge pertaining to video games, and finally, humor. Also, cocks.

Oh, one more thing: I'm what people like to call a 'grammarian', and in my case, that also includes spelling. So nothing you see here, in my c-blog, or in my front page posts, should have any such errors (except for internet memes and the like, such as 'I can has c-blog?', etc.) Let me know if you spot a mistake. Also, I generally correct other people's mistakes, and since it's hard to correct someone without coming off as a dick, please don't take offense if I do it to you. It's only constructive criticism, and even if I'm brusque, I mean well.

Video Games Live is FINALLY coming to New York City!
Samit Sarkar | 4:36 PM on 12.13.2007 20 comments

Well, ask and ye shall receive, I guess (check out the fourth comment). I’m on the mailing list for Ticketmaster and Live Nation in New York, and I just got an email yesterday about Video Games Live. After much waiting and anticipation on my part, my prayers were answered: VGL will be playing the Beacon Theatre on Saturday, April 26, 2008 at 8 PM!

The important part is this: RIGHT NOW, until 10 PM EST tonight (Thursday, December 13), they’re running a pre-sale before the tickets go on sale to the public at 11 AM tomorrow. Usually, to be eligible for pre-sales at Madison Square Garden events, you have to be an American Express cardmember, but nothing of the sort is required for this show. All you have to do when you order the tickets is use the promotional code HEHALO. Tickets are available at $35, $55, and $75. For more information on the pre-sale, check out the link below (it’s an e-copy of the email I got):

Video Games Live: PRESALE ON DEC. 13!

Also, here’s a link to the page on the Beacon Theatre’s website for the show itself:
Video Games Live - April 26, 2008 at Beacon Theatre

I hope to see all of you tri-state-area Dtoiders there! I’ve got my tickets...do you have yours?

P.S. This will most likely turn out to be my shortest blog post ever, so enjoy the brevity while you can :)

You know what? Yes. Yes, I will be there.

Who else is going? I'm looking forward to the opportunity to meet a fellow Dtoider or two, since those of us up here don't get as much opportunity.

Put this up in the forums too, if you haven't already. No reason to let people miss out if this croc gets covered.

@Rainbowblack: Well, there’s always eBay...and you never know, even with getting the tickets from the official vendor. I saw Eric Clapton at the Garden on 9/29/2006, and I bought the ticket from Ticketmaster.com on, like, September 5th. Sometimes you just luck out. (Granted, they were in the highest possible row of the Garden, all the way in the nosebleed section, but I still got to see the show)

this might be dumb...but what the hell are "Video Games Live"? is it where you play with everyone in the room, or where some actors play out video game stories? what is it?

This is awesome. I'm gonna try and be there, although I'm not making any promises. Is there any chance they'll be completely sold out? I'm broke at the moment (christmas shopping for family sucks), but if they don't (which is most likely the case) I will try to grab some tickets/

You saw Clapton at the freakin Garden? That is fuckin amazing. If he can't sell out a show, I doubt VGL will.

Video Games Live - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Basically, it’s a show with a full orchestra and choir — as well as video footage from many games and all kids of crazy lights — where music from many different video games is performed. Just look at the image at the top of my post for a list of some of the games and series of games in question.

@liam2015: Oh no, the Clapton show was most definitely sold out. In fact, I’m pretty sure that I got the last ticket in the Garden; I tried searching later on for just one ticket, and nothing came up. It was an awesome show, and I couldn’t see any empty seats. Hopefully, the Beacon Theatre will have tickets left for you to buy after your wallet has recovered from Christmas shopping. Luckily for me, I have a credit card, heh heh...ha...oh man, I’m going into debt...
