The defining moment of my life so far

Hey everybody, I'm Samit Sarkar, and I'm a 23-year-old lifelong gamer from New York (short answer). What's the long answer, you ask? Well, I'm from a bunch of places, actually: I was born in Calcutta, India, and I moved to the States when I was ten months old. I've lived in New York ever since (Queens until I was eight, and Long Island since then). So I figure that 20+ years of living in and around New York City is enough for me to be able to call myself a New Yorker.

I officially became a Destructoid editor in February 2008, but I've been an avid reader of the site since November 2006 (you may know me from my old nom de guerre, "BrOnXbOmBr21"). On the staff, I'm the lone editor who covers sports games, but you may see me do other things from time to time. If you ever have any questions, concerns, props, or hate mail, please see the "Contact Me" section above for ways to get them to me.

I've been into video games for as long as I can remember. In 1990, when I was four, my parents got me an NES, and I've been hooked ever since. I often tell people that I'll play video games until the day I die, and I truly believe that. So here's my gaming history (date in parentheses is when I got the console):

Nintendo Entertainment System (Christmas 1990)*
Sega Genesis (Christmas 1993)*
Sony PlayStation (Christmas 1997)*
Sony PlayStation 2 (December 27, 2000)
Sony PlayStation 3 (December 31, 2006)
Microsoft Xbox 360 Elite (February 6, 2010)

*I no longer have this console
_______________________________________________

I may not have a crapload of games, but I do have a rather extensive DVD collection. For the full lists, check out my collections at IGN:

My Video Game Collection
My DVD/Blu-ray Collection

As you can see, I'm a big fan of sports games, action games, shooters, and platformers. Some of my favorite games/series, in case you don't feel like going through my entire collection, are: God of War, Grand Theft Auto, Guitar Hero, Madden, and Prince of Persia. Also, though I've never played any prior games in the series at length, I plan to get into the Metal Gear Solid series in this generation.

Finally, I really think that Destructoid is the greatest place on the internet for video game-related news and things like that -- that's why I spend an inordinate amount of time on the site. It provides a unique combination of resources: news, humor, a phenomenal community, humor, a tremendous amount of knowledge pertaining to video games, and finally, humor. Also, cocks.

Oh, one more thing: I'm what people like to call a 'grammarian', and in my case, that also includes spelling. So nothing you see here, in my c-blog, or in my front page posts, should have any such errors (except for internet memes and the like, such as 'I can has c-blog?', etc.) Let me know if you spot a mistake. Also, I generally correct other people's mistakes, and since it's hard to correct someone without coming off as a dick, please don't take offense if I do it to you. It's only constructive criticism, and even if I'm brusque, I mean well.

Circuit City on Black Friday makes BrOnXbOmBr21 something something...
Samit Sarkar | 6:46 PM on 11.26.2007 20 comments

Yes, I know this is late, but I didn’t have internet access at home until Friday evening (we just moved), and I spent much of the rest of the weekend sleeping. Sue me. Anyway, I thought I’d relate my Black Friday story (original, I know).

Let me preface this with a short recap of my experience on Black Friday 2006: After getting into Best Buy shortly after it opened at 5 AM, I got what I wanted, got on line, and was out within an hour. That’s not bad at all, considering that the line itself snaked around the store’s appliance aisles (among others) all the way to the back, by the TVs. I made the short trip to Circuit City upon leaving, and got there around 6:15. I got on line by 7 ... and my receipt was dated thusly (I’m approximating the time): 11:15 AM, Friday, November 24, 2006. That’s right, I was on line for OVER THREE HOURS. A friend of mine vowed never to return to Circuit City on a normal day, let alone a Black Friday, and let’s just say that I should have agreed with him.

I checked out the Black Friday 2007 ads at bfads.net prior to their official public release and was underwhelmed: with regards to Black Friday, I’m pretty much only in it for the DVD deals (I have a pretty significant collection). It seems as if they’re simply trying to get rid of the big-ticket items more and more with each year — Best Buy had 10 different HDTVs for sale at ridiculously discounted prices. In fact, I wasn’t even going to go out this year because the only thing that originally piqued my interest was a half-price sale on all HBO DVDs at Best Buy; I would be able to get Season 3, Part 2 of Entourage for $16.99. That was when I saw Hamza’s “I am a consumer whore!” post and realized that I had the opportunity to pick up Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare for $48 (20% off) at Target (for the last time, you morons, it’s not “Tar-zhay”). I couldn’t pass that up, so a few friends and I decided to brave the 30° temperatures (and 20+ mile-per-hour winds) on Long Island that morning and go out.

For the past few years, my friends and I have done the Black Friday thing, and since we don’t want to go to bed early and have to wake up at an ungodly hour, we simply start a poker game late on Thanksgiving night and then play until we decide to head out for the sales. We started playing around 9:30, and a few friends came by around 11. They said they had just come from Best Buy, and there was apparently already a line around the store (and it’s a big freakin’ building). So we decided to forgo that store, and since we didn’t like the idea of waiting too long in the cold, we left for Circuit City at 4ish, hoping to get in when it opened (5 AM), get our stuff, get out, and get to Target by its 6 AM opening. I didn’t have anything specific to get there; my friend wanted to get Guitar Hero II on Xbox 360 (it was on sale for $59.99) for a friend, so I figured I’d just wade through the bins of $3.99 DVDs and find something I liked.

My friend wanted to get food, so by the time we got to Circuit City, it was just past 5. Needless to say, there was a line around the corner that was over 500 feet long (and looked like it had over 500 people on it). By 6:15 AM, we had made it about halfway to the corner — maybe 300 feet — and I could barely feel my toes. My friend realized that all the Guitar Hero II bundles would almost certainly have sold out by then, so he suggested cutting our losses and leaving. But I wasn’t going home empty-handed, even though we had heard from some other friends that the line at Target was pretty long as well. So we got to Target at 6:20, and my story gets much happier from then on. We walked right in (that particular Target is absolutely massive, like the size of a Costco) and ran to the video game section, where I found what looked to be 20–30 pristine copies of CoD 4 on PS3 on the shelf. Also, I was even able to get half of my Christmas shopping done by picking up The Orange Box on 360 for my brother for the same price as CoD 4 — $48. Oh, and in case you’re wondering, the other half of my shopping is for my parents — yep, I’m lucky; I don’t have to buy many gifts.

This is what Target looked like — except with more bullseye logos

In an extra special super happy bonus, I went to Best Buy around 9:30 AM and found plenty of copies of the Entourage DVD that I had originally planned to get, so in the end, the day turned out quite well. But I am NEVER going to Circuit City on a Black Friday ever again — at least not that particular store (whoever designed its layout is a moron, and it’s too small to begin with). I hope you were all able to get what you wanted as well!

I got The Orange Box at CC on Saturday, then found out it won't run on my vid card (story in my blog.) Well, Peggle Extreme runs fine. I got a leftover Mario Galaxy preorder coin for free, too!

I will never... EVER shop on Black Friday. I just look online for specials and what not. It's going to take a damn good deal for me to put up with a store packed full of 'soccer moms' looking to find a Wii for their bastard children.

Can someone tell me precisely what Black Friday is? Does it exist in Australia and I just haven't heard of it, or is this something particular to the civilized world.

when the security guard at the target i worked at opened the doors, the people pushed him out of the way and ran for the electronics boat. it was an obscene display of the consumer whore at work.

@soul3150

It's a made up day just like Christmas and Martin Luther King Jr. day that takes place the day after Thanksgiving (Friday) where companies take advantage of the people who will throw their money at any deal they see. Stores put out 'great' deals like half off prices of games, electronics, etc. It's basically the unofficial start of Christmas shopping.

@electro lemon: Non sequitur much?

@IceMax: Yep, the Circuit City off Merchants Concourse, at the Source Mall. If you know the place, then you’ll understand how little we moved in the hour or so that we were in line: we got on line before the Dave & Buster’s (actually, about halfway between it and the other corner where Old Navy is)...and by 6:15, we had only moved to the first loading dock before the corner. Gah!

The reason I loathe that particular store is because of its god-awful layout. As I mentioned, it’s too small to accommodate the hordes of shoppers on Black Friday, and there’s no central area for the registers. They have a small customer service center near the front with two or three registers, and that tends to be where a mass of people congregate. They have maybe seven or eight other registers in the entire store at the ends of random aisles. Not only does that impede the flow of traffic, it makes the lines unbearable. And for some reason, the workers at that store are slow as molasses.

Also, I’m glad that at least a few of you got the Simpsons reference.

Circuit City's website had some weird glitch over the weekend.

Selected games were supposed to be 2 for $30, but were coming up 2 for $20, or 10 bucks each.

Before they fixed it, I managed to purchase 4 PSP games: GTA Vice City Stories, SOCOM Fireteam 2 (or something), Metal Gear Portable Ops, and Tekken Resurrection for 10 bucks each.

I got EA Replay for $5 bucks. My entire order was about $49 bucks for 5 games. And they shipped it for free.

I may hate Circuit City, but I love their stupidity.

oh, yeah the register layout is confusing as fuck at that circuit city, even when the store is empty. I went to best buy at around 10:00 AM black Friday to get orange box, and the checkout lines moved surprisingly quickly and efficiently. the store was fucking packed though, and i spent more time looking for parking than in the store.

@IceMax: Yeah, that Best Buy is fantastic in terms of how they run Black Friday. It’s very organized, and I’ve found that in years past — even with the line at 6 AM snaking through the appliance section around the store to the back by the TVs — you usually won’t spend more than 45 minutes on line. It also helps to have like 20 registers at the front.

Yeah I wouldn't have been able to do any black Friday shopping if I wanted seeing as I had work that day. But its good to hear you accomplished something.
