While nothing can quite compare to the feel of playing poker on the “real” felt with chips in your hand, video games have come a long way in replicating the game. In fact, playing poker on a video game is an excellent way to master the rules of Texas Hold'em and work out the kinks in your strategy so you can play your best when you get the chance to play for high stakes. Two of the top poker-related video games on the market right now are available for the Xbox 360. Learn more about World Series of Poker: Full House Pro and Poker Night 2, both for Xbox 360, so you can decide which game is the best investment for you.

World Series of Poker: Full House Pro

The World Series of Poker is the biggest poker event each year, and the video game series sponsored by the event offers world series-size fun. This is the successor to the original Full House Poker game. Like the first, it is available for download on the Microsoft Live Network.

What sets WSOP: Full House Pro apart from other video game adaptions of poker is the ability to play multiplayer games online with people around the world—including friends. The game itself is fairly straightforward—but with the multiplayer aspect, gamers don’t have to worry about the AI becoming predictable.

This game comes in a “Freemium” model. This means you pay nothing up front for the game, but you can unlock extras and additional content if you want to take the game to the next level. Whether you choose to do this or not, this WSOP themed game is a great value and will likely only grow into an even better one as more content is released.

Poker Night 2

This is a video-based poker game that doesn’t take itself too seriously. Poker Night 2 aims to replicate the feel of spending an evening around the poker table with a group of friends who may or may not be great at cards—but amuse you with their witticisms and banter.

You’ll enjoy playing poker with characters from popular video games, television shows and film. Have you ever wondered what it would be like to play poker with Ash from Evil Dead or Brock from the Venture Bros? Poker Night 2 gives you the chance to experience this.

Serious poker players may be a bit disappointed as the game does put a bigger focus on the interaction and storytelling aspect of things than the poker itself. However, you will find that the AI is more than sufficient to challenge most casual gamers. The game offers tournament format gaming in both Texas Hold’em and Omaha Hold’em—a fun variation of casino poker.

For most players, either of these games does a more-than-adequate job of translating the fun of Texas Hold’em to the Xbox 360. It comes down to choosing the game that appeal to you most in terms of aesthetics and controls. Give video game poker a whirl and if you are willing to put in the time and effort, you will find your skills improve—something that can pay off at the casino as well as in your video gaming pursuits.
