I'm late with this one also, aren't I? I've been busy with school and trying to read a shit ton of pages in my school books because I'm a slacker. Well, I hope I can come up with 10 things, hum.
1. I'm Cuban. Yes. Most people don't even think I'm hispanic at all. In fact, people think I'm lying about it because I don't look like some chongalicious chica. Living in Miami, people expect Cubans to look a certain way. Most people think I'm from Europe.
2. I've honestly been a nerd all my life. My brother, as I've mentioned before, shared his Nintendo with me and since then, gaming has been a big part of my life. I grew up playing games with my brother for as I long as I can remember. I'm the only first generation female cousin in the family so I'm glad I like games. All my cousins are gaming nerds and it's been a tradition for years that we play video games during holidays like Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve. I think family events would suck ass if I wasn't into gaming. XD
3. From gaming, I met anime. I guess they connect somehow but I've been crazy about anime since 3rd grade. I think it has helped me become a huge nerd. I'm not complaining. I never felt that I belonged with what you can call "the normal crowd". My room is cluttered with so much crap from years of collecting that it's hard to breathe in here. And I also cosplay. I don't know how to make anything, handsew cause I don't know how to use a sewing machine, and everything is a guess but it seem like the family history of sewing is working somehow. I tend to enjoy cosplaying pretty boys more than girls, btw.
Male
vs.
Female
4. Because of anime, it helped me want to do things that lead to my future. I've always loved drawing and crafts since I was really small but anime made me want to be part of the animation world. Though I changed my decision about animation, I want to involve myself with Japanese people and their culture because it's different, strange, and amazing all at the same time.
5. I've taken Japanese since middle school. Yeah, my middle school offered Japanese, along with my high school. And even though I've taken it for so long, I'm still not good at it. I'm great at reading and hearing it. But having an ongoing conversation or writing letters is what I suck at.
6. I've been to Japan 6 times. This summer will make it my 7th time. My first time was the only time I was an exchange student. The other times, my hard working ass pays to go over there.
7. I've been diagnosed with PCOS since elementary school. It's weird, because most girls get it when they're older. It's even more weird I don't care about telling people about it anymore. I used to never tell anyone but I guess that's what happens when you get older -- you just don't shit.
8. I've only dated 4 guys in my life and only one was from Miami (living wise, yes. But he was Japanese and not born in Miami). My second boyfriend was from Canada when I went there for a year to study animation and he was Chinese. My third boyfriend was long distance; he as my penpal for 1 1/2 years and from Japan and I met him the next summer. I hate that asshole, btw. My current boyfriend, which is a long distance relationship, is the first non-asian boyfriend (HA-HA) and I met him in such a nerdy way -- yeah, you can laugh -- WiiChat Forum. He happened to be one of my friends that I added to my Wii and shit happened, and now we've been together for 2 years and almost 2 months.
9. I've recently joined Tomopop as an editor. I know, who KNEW? I just popped right in there. I'm happy to have met Niero and Colette because I wouldn't have been a part of all the crazyness that comes with DToid and I wouldn't have ever been writing about figures on Tomopop. I'm thankful for that.
10. I'm a really shy person. If there are too many new people around me, I'll migrate to someone who I know and stay with them the whole time. I'm bad at introducing myself sometimes to people and I have a hard time starting a conversation if I don't know you at all. For me, if people approach me and talk to me, then I try my best to feel comfortable.
10.5 (aka, pointless factor but just need to write) .... I'm insanely addicted to Left 4 Dead. Stupid thing to write about but I Iose sleep over this game. It's my first shooter game on my 360 I can't believe it's the only thing I play these days. WHY! My RPGs that I haven't played are seriously crying somewhere.
9 - Congrats on the tomopop gig!
10.5 - How can something be half a fact... Facts can only be true or not true and in whole numbers but if it's a....
AAAAAUUUUGHHH....
LOL. It's not half a fact .. just trying to fit 10 into the 10 list. :P 10.5 is a pointless fact to know but I just had to write about L4D cause I'm fucking addicted, hahaha.
Always nice to learn about my fellow Tomopop editors. :)
10- I'm the same way. Whenever I'm at a party, and I don't know a lot of the people there, I'll quickly look for someone I recognize and follow them until I get more comfortable. It's annoyed a few, I can tell you that.
Man, I'd love to go to Japan some day. Awesome list!
You should come to one of the bigger NARPs, #10 would not be an issue whatsoever. Dtoid people are just that awesome.
i'm seriously...SERIOUSLY trying not to do one of these things..but this was a nice read. congrats on the tomopop deal.
Now let me know when you are going to Japan this summer..I wish to join...seriously. (I mean...if I have enough money to go AND it's not during Otakon time.)
You know, I've always wanted to go to Japan. Oddly enough it's never been for monetary reasons but instead because I don't have the time. I haven't had more than a week free in almost two years :).
@ point 6:
GOD DAMN YOU!!! I haven't even been there once... T_T
@ point 7:
PCOS?
@ point 10.5:
Having half a fact, isn't that like dividing by zero? Are you god?
You are correct that I obviously did not know any of these things about you. :-P
Don't feel bad about taking Japanese for so long but still not knowing the language very well. I took it for 4 years in high school, and I forget almost everything I ever learned. That stuff is just crazy hard!
Great list BTW!
If number 10 is an issue for you, get into sales. You won't be scared of shit anymore, and the word "no" will make you think "a challenger appears".
@ Usetabe: Oddly enough, when it comes to work, I'm okay with it. I have 2 jobs, one of them being Gamestop, and I have no problem talking to people at all. I guess it's the atmosphere of parties or something when being around people for x amount of hours that makes it hard.
@ Palidi: ;_; Harsh, haha. And google is your friend for PCOS. There's a reason why I didn't really explain about it. :P
@ Shin Oni: Sure, if you really want to. I"m actually taking some friends this summer to show them around. XD And isn't Otakon earlier this year? I wish I could go again this year but Japan>Otakon. I did have fun last year, though.
I can relate to your number 1. Im Puertorican and no one at school believed it for a while, in fact there was a time when people though I was from Wisconsin.
wait you were at otakon last year? hmmm any of those 2 did you cosplay?
Otakon is in June IIRC. though if you happen to go to Japan around Otakon, i'd probably still go. It just puts back my Cosplaying till Anime USA...or doing it in Japan for fun. I dunno.
but yes...keep me updated on the trip.
@ Shin Oni: Actually, I cosplayed from Gurren Lagann. I was one of the Nia's on Saturday :3 Friday was Shugo Chara and Sunday was Tales of the Abyss.
And Japan is in August. :]
I see then. I won't pry into any specifics then. From what I read of Wikipedia though, in my opinion, it doesn't sound like all that bad a condition to have. Eh, maybe it's just one of those things I'd have to be a woman to fully understand.
Heh, and I didn't mean to be so harsh with my response to point 6. I'd have a hard time traveling so far on my own unless I was with people I considered to be family(not necessarily blood relatives though). I hope to live there one day though.
hmm..there were so many Gurren Laganns running around...though I don't remember many Nias...I want pics.
I also might've missed you due to the fact I did a lot of backtracking from the game room/dealers room/art room...and the hotel because my backpack was getting heavy. (and not enough hotel keys to go around)
She's Cuban, B
I won't be the first to say it, but I'll say it:
Ur pretty
Yay Sakuchan you made it! Never too late for a 10 things list from you.
I say 7 times to Japan. That's worth a hi-Five! Where did you work to fund your trips Saku? I got to go once last year, but it was only for two weeks. Nice Job on the Editor gig also. Catcha around!
- PS. I like your eyes.
@ Palidi: It's one thing to read specifics on Wikipedia. It's different when you hear someone telling you about how they feel about it. You'll run across stories about women who are depressed from having it. But you're right, it's something only a woman can understand but I will tell you, it's really tough. And I know you weren't seriously harsh, it's okay :)
@ Shin Oni: There were a lot of GL people running around! XD But there weren't a lot of Nia's. Here, I'll share a picture:
@ LasySkySamurai: I have 2 jobs, actually. Gamestop and Chicken Grill (place only in Florida). So I practically work hard to save what I can while trying to go to school. But it's worth it in the end. :)
I reeaaaallly wish my high school had Japanese as an option. I would have loved that.
Also, your cosplay is really really good.
HEY I KNOW YOU I LIKE YOUR FACE
Its funny, when I don't have a sun tan Miami people don't realize I'm cuban either. I leave the Miami city limits and people can spot me as hispanic from a mile away, but in town you have to be tremendo marimbero to be a proper hispanic apparently. I was at the thift shop and the lady behind the counter was all like "let me attend to this american" and started talking shit about my weird checkpoint charlie shirt, so I just stood there grinning at her and let her finish. When she gave me my change I said "muchisimas grancias, senoritas" and it was like I shoved a whale dick in her mouth. You should have seen her face.
Damn, you going to Japan 6 times already makes me feel like less of an Asian . . . -_-' Hahaha!
...I truly never understood the gamers/nerds fascination with Japanese culture.
It disturbs and confuses me.
Perhaps I am naive =/
Ouuu I like your cosplays~ :3 I wanted to email you about Pop n' goodness~ feel free to drop me a PM :D
It's nice to know more about you since you seem to like the same things I do.
Srsly good cosplay is srsly good.
Good list, you made me feel like less of a nerd ;)
@ Niero: LOL. That's seriously great. I've caught bitches off guard before, even if I can't speak Spanish well.
@ Half Left: To be honest, I don't understand it myself. I find it weird how I could love another culture so much, and it really isn't because of anime or games.
Wow, fantastic cosplay. What anime were you watching way back in third grade? Aside from stuff like Gatchaman and Speed Racer that was absorbed into American culture, I didn't get into anime until the late 90s with Dragonball Z. Did you have some cool older relative/rad asian stores in your area that exposed you to this stuff?
hmm...that Nia is awesome but I seriously don't remember. But knowing me, i'd probably be too shy to say anything besides "Can I get your picture?"
and yes...what anime did you watch when you were smaller? I think my first hint of anime was still My Neighbor Totoro...which I still hold dear in my heart.
@ Shin Oni: Fine, I see how it is ;_; You didn't want to talk to me even if you saw me!
I had seen older stuff that I didn't even know was considered "anime" at the time. It was Dragon Ball that I saw and was like "oh shit, this is amazing!" But it was Sailor Moon in 5th grade that made me get really addicted.
And to answer you, Char, I don't have any Asians in my family XD It was just something I stumbled into myself. I really didn't think it would have become something so big for me now.
Personally, if I DID see you, i'd probably talk and completely keep telling myself that you're just too hot to be single. lol.
I see you caught on during the sailor moon/Dragon Ball american generation of anime...good days..goooooood days.
Sinmce I'm your girlfriend I can say this and not be accused of being a perv:
YOUREEEEE PRETTYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY ^____^
Congrats on the editor position!
Great list! I've been to Japan over 10 times!!111oneone. But it's only because I used to live in Asia. I'll be going there again this summer.
It's great you'll be taking the exchange student program. Once you live there and hear nothing but Japanese, you'll start to speak it no problem.
Collette took the words out of my mouth....
Wow, marry me! Im fairly certain girls like you dont exist within a 200 mile radius of me here in England. Geek princess alert!
I suspect there are many of us here who had previous lives as Japanese people. Japan is a must for me, but I hate flying, so am in a predicament. I MUST get to Akihabara....soon!!!!
Nice list :)
L4D! You should play with us on FNF or something sometime, there's a game going almost every day as well :)
Also gratz on editor gig!
