Manga is delicious and available offline or on. I'm not up to date with western comics, though.
Right now, Marvel is knee deep in a summer event called "Secret Invasion." In short, it's detailing the Skulls' invasion of the 616 Universe stemming all the way back to the Secret War from 2004. I also highly suggest getting into the Ultimate Marvel stuff. The Ultimate line is a more modern, alternative universe to the core 616 Marvel. It started with Ultimate Spider-Man in... 2000 was it? Wikipedia could explain things better than I ever could. Amazing Spider-Man had practically decades of stuff basically retconned a few months ago. It goes tri-weekly, so there won't be super long waits to finish up arcs and whatnot.
Batman is really good now as is Booster Gold. I also personally enjoy Checkmate, Shadowpact, and Simon Dark but I really enjoy the subject matter of those books. If you're not a fan of espionage or occult themes you may not care for them.
I´ve read the first 3 "Kick Ass" numbers aviable and fell deeply in love with teh story. Don´t know how long will the comic run, but ut´s an amazing story published by Marvel.
Worth a try I must say.
Or you could do what I do...
Since I've banned myself from reading comics during the school year, and I never even started until a few years ago, I just buy the trade paperbacks.
That way I can catch up quickly, and I don't have to wait to read the next issue.
Agreeing with everyone else up there, Batman is amazing. Take a look at anything written by Grant Morrison, his work is pretty much solid all around.
I'd take a look into Immortal Iron Fist as well, very well written.
Ultimate Marvel is something I hold near and dear to my heart, so I can't recommend that enough.
@Video_Cogneto: USM started in 2000.
If I were you, I'd buy the trade paperbacks instead of individual issues. Much cheaper, and you get a full story instead of having to wait. It's pretty much how I get my comic fix now, being a broke college student.
If you were to go that route, I'd HIGHLY suggest the Ultimate Marvel line again. Not to brag or anything, but I bought it all. Its that good.
Other Trades to pick up, I'd suggest:
Batman: Hush
Batman: War Drums, War Games 1-3, War Crimes
Superman/Batman
Marvel:1602
Also, I cannot stress enough how everyone on Destructoid NEEDS to read the Scott Pilgrim series. Four Volumes are out now, each one about 10 bucks, and it deals with a slacker in Canada, and life. Rather, its the way life should be. To give you a taste, at one point, Scott, the protaganist, gets attacked. He parrys the attack, hits his attacker with an air juggle, and then proceeds to unleash a 64-hit combo on him (Scott's personal best).
If you want more ideas for comics or trades, feel free to drop me a line.
Wow... way more feedback than I was expecting.
It's a lot of info to chew on, but at least it'll get me started in the right direction.
Thank you, Dtoiders. As always, you guys have been exceptionally awesome.
Always willing to help a fellow geek.
Mecha Jesus is right about Scott Pilgrim, i got my habnds on the first 3 issues, can´t find the fourth one, and it´s more than an amazing story.
I love the art, I love the characters, I love the situations, one of my favorites comis of all times.
A Canadian slacker. Definitely material I can relate to.
Superman is my favorite comic book character, but the Batman comics are always soo much better.
I HIGHLY recommend the trade paperbacks of The Walking Dead and Y: The Last man. I'd also recommend you pick up the Wanted trade, so you can scoff at how the movie is NOTHING like the kickass story that lies within its pages. Also, if you are a fan of well-written humor +kickassitude, I'd recommend NextWave.
For monthly books on the DC side, pretty much anything Geoff Johns writes, and marvel; I'd recommend the Ultimate line. It's not what you remember and good fun, even if a little late sometimes.
If you couldn't guess from my avatar, I love me some Captain Marvel. I mean proper Captain Marvel, aka Shazam. Not that Marvel comics bitch. Fanboyism aside, "The Trials of Shazam" is a good series that I think just finished up. Graphic novels of note are Walking Dead, like Balth said, Watchmen, V for Vendetta, Invincible, and Justice. Good luck, fellow comic book reader!
I agree with balth, Nextwave is fantastic. The only Marvel book I've read since Jr. High. Also it's only 12 issues in two trades, so it's really easy to pick up.
I just got back out of comics again....DC's 52 and Countdown shit just wore me out and killed my love for the medium. I've been comic free for 6 months now.
Probably start picking up the trades of things I missed and get back in the flow of it in the next couple months. I just needed a break from what was getting to be a $50 habit. And I was getting behind on reading everything.
Oh man, how could I forget about Nextwave? So good. Dunno if I'd recommend Wanted though. Something about truly horrible people doing truly horrible things never sat well with me. Add to the fact that the protagonist at the end of the book yells at you for liking it, left a sour taste in my mouth. Still, to each his own.
Captain Apocalypse recomended some good ones, Watchmen, and Justice stand out. Never liked V for Vendetta, I actually couldn't read it, it just was that harsh on my eyes. Not the story, but the artwork and writing I actually couldn't make out. Whether that was the copy I had or not, who knows.
OH!
The new Green Arrow series that started with Kevin Smith's run. FANTASTIC.
Anyways, I've ranted about comics enough for one day.
only ones I read on a monthly basis these days are angel: after the fall and buffy season 8. Yes back in the day I was a huge buffy nut so it's nice to see what happened after according to whedon.
You can't go wrong with the Secret Invasion series. I am reading the New Avengers, Cable, and Captain America as Bucky tries to fill in for Steve Rodgers. Those are my favorites right now.
I recommend the Civil War collections. Or the Marvel Zombie ones. I'm still new at the comic book thing :|
You can always count on Mecha to help out on requests like this, and so I throw in my two bits. First off: Immortal. Iron. Fist. The second collection just came out, and it isn't slowing down anytime soon, Warren Ellis' run on Thunderbolts has been great so far, and you can collect the back collections of Ex Machina ($10 a pop) and stretch it out like reading a monthly as the series rolls on (looking to end in the next two years I think). Happy reading!
May I recommend Aquaman and Power Pack?
Fables
Batman(elseworlds):Red Rain and Bloodstorm
That's some bad ass reading right there.
What everyone else said, I'd also check out the trades of Fables and Y: The Last Man if you're looking for something non-superhero related.
If you see a funny book written by Ed Brubaker or Geoff Johns, buy it. They are the two best writers currently doing ongoing stuff for Marvel and DC respectively (All Star Supe's ends at issue 12).
As for other great series:
Walking Dead
Invincible
Casanova
Immortal Iron Fist
Fables
The Boys
DMZ
Great series that have ended and are must reads:
Preacher
Sandman
Y The Last Man
Hellboy
Transmetropolitan
Planetary
Kingdom Come
Justice
And thats just scratching the surface.
Most people here pretty much have you covered. Final Crisis just started so you should really get on before its too late. It's gonna be fuckin brilliant.
THE WALKING DEAD
also, DMZ
Walking Dead is awesome.
I think I'm the only person on Dtoid who's reading Doktor Sleepless and it's one of the most intriguing comics I've ever read. I keep trying to encourage people to check it out but I guess I'm just not selling it enough.
Walking Dead for sure. Also Invincible and Batman: Hush
i don't know diddly about comics, but i lived w/ a card carrying comic nerd for a while who put me on to 'Lone Wolf and Cub'. excellent, excellent stuff.
