About
I can't say I was there for the dawn of gaming but it was at least the early morning. I've played 'em all from Atari 2600 to Xbox 360.

If I'm not playing games I'm listening to music (game and movie soundtracks mostly), watching movies/TV, surfing the web or "sigh"...working.

Favorite games include:

Atari 2600 - Space Invaders, Pole Position, Frankenstein's Monster, Kangaroo and Jungle Hunt
NES - Super Mario (all), Legend of Zelda, Mega Man 2, Final Fantasy and Castlevania
SMS - Shinobi, Phantasy Star, Fantasy Zone and After Burner
SNES - Super Mario World, Zelda: LTTP, Castlevania IV and Final Fantasy VI (III to the uneducated)
Genesis - Sonic (all), Streets of Rage, Phantasy Star IV, Castlevania Bloodlines and Earthworm Jim
Sega CD - Sonic CD, Night Trap, Sol Feace, Final Fight CD and D
TG16 - Bonk (all), Splatterhouse and New Adventure Island
Turbo CD - Dracula X: Rondo of Blood (not released in the US)XX
Playstation - Final Fantasy VII, Final Fantasy IX, Castlevania SOTN, Metal Gear Solid and Resident Evil (all)
Saturn - Panzer Dragoon.....that's all I got there
Jaguar - Alien vs Predator and Doom
N64 - Zelda OOT, Super Mario 64, Doom 64, Star Fox 64, Castlevania 64 and Superman 64....j/k
PS2 - God of War 1 and 2, MGS 2 and 3, Final Fantasy XII, Dragon Quest VIII and Ratchet and Clank (all)

Xbox 360 - Halo 3, Burnout Revenge, Star Ocean 4, Left 4 Dead and Ghostbusters

My friends and I were arguing a while back. We were at a convention in the game room and I had just beaten Contra on the NES. They were going on about what a badass I was for beating it and I happened to mention that it's not so bad when you have 30 lives and their whole perspective changed. Now the running joke is that I'm a "hero" (that's what it says at the end of Contra) because I used the Konami Code.

My point is this: At what point do you say someone cheated at a game? Would you say the Konami Code is cheating or would you not call it cheating unless you used a Game Genie/Game Shark/Action Replay?

For myself I wouldn't call cheat unless you use an external device. If it's built into the game then it's just another way of modifying the difficulty as there are codes that make games harder as well as easier. I wouldn't say I cheated at Contra. I just beat it on the easiest difficulty.

You know, I'll just go ahead and say it. You didn't beat Contra. The code exists for the sake of letting people who can't beat it enjoy the game, though technically the code exists because the testers themselves could not beat the game.

However the game was designed to be played on a very limited stock of lives. You didn't beat the game on the easiest difficulty. You just saw the end and had a good time. You've got no claim to fame. Even if you did beat the game on the easiest difficulty, that's the least impressive thing you can do and being poked fun at isn't to be unexpected. I'd hope that much is all in good fun.

It doesn't necessarily matter if you did beat the game or not. You had a good time. Just don't claim to have beaten it while using a code. That defeats the purpose of even using the word "beat." I won't say you cheated if you don't say you beat the game.
What is all this bullshit? Those codes are also called cheat-codes. Which means you beat the game while cheating. I don't mind you cheated. In fact I couldn't care less.

"no claim to fame" and "don't claim you've beaten it" is all nonsense and really not even an issue. It's not that you've claimed an award or a large sum of money or anything. Whatever dude, just cheat your way to victory. Be honest about it and it's all good.
Point taken. So we'll establish that to "beat" a game one must do it by the game's default design. Let's say we draw the line at using any type of code regardless if it's built into the game.

Contra was just one example. What about gaming in general? How about changing the difficulty in the options menu? Some could argue that the options menus is part of the game's design and as such any changes you make would fall within it's parameters.

On the flip side, let's say you increase the difficulty. Typically this earns you awesome points but you're still going outside that default zone.
Blog of the millennium.
Hahhaahahah. This would have been a perfect candidate for a troll blog.

Anyways, yea, cheat codes=cheat codes. Whether they're put in by a Gameshark or by you, they're "cheats".

Now if you wanted to bring up exploits, that would be a whole 'nother valid debate. Diablo II teleporting: Mario Sunshine belly rolling, etc. Not using "cheats" in particular, but exploiting certain design flaws to win.
@ Magnalon
Even exploits are a slippery slope to defend. The Halo 2 Multiplayer Superbounces come to mind IMMEDIATELY - they were glitches in the game, and you didn't technically cheat to get to areas in which you shouldn't be, but you were still a cheating douchebag if you relied on them to carry a win.

The same can be said for the Guile handcuffs in SF2 or even infinite combos in MvC2 to a certain extent. It removes the fun from the game, and turns it into a one-sided contest the likes of a matchup between a bear and an infant.

Just my opinion.

On the subject of codes to further oneself in a game, yes, that's cheating. Beating Contra with 5 lives is far more impressive in scope and achievement, and very few can honestly make that boast. It's like playing GTA - play the game as it was intended and the challenge remains, cheat and you get the same story, but the experience is diminished overall. You didn't work for anything, therefore your intrinsic reward is nullified.

Of course, if you don't give a shit either way, then disregard that last statement.
@S0LID B0SS: Like I said, it's not that there's anything wrong with using a code. I wrote an entire article being allowed to play games the way you want to play them. I just get this big nagging feeling were I to ever claim to be victorious over a game that I used cheats on.

And making the game harder is just for random bragging rights. I do that kind of thing a lot myself, but mostly because I have this stubborn habit of trying to make things "more interesting." Really that's just a nice way of saying I kill myself trying to do weird things a lot. When you can do something retarded like play Ikaruga on two machines at the same time, I think that's when the awesome points really start rolling in.

@Takeshi: Again, nothing wrong with it so long as people are honest. I just consider that when you say you "beat" a game that you've conquered it in some way, and I don't consider that true when cheats are enabled. Maybe that nagging feeling I refer to doesn't apply to everyone.

@Magnalon: Exploits are probably a lot trickier. Some like the pause glitch to beat the Yellow Devil in Mega Man 1, that definitely counts as cheating since you're basically bypassing something. If you do something like Roll Cancel in Capcom vs SNK 2 it's not quite what I'd call cheating because it's an option open to both players and they're basically just changing the nature of the game.
Personally I could care less if people cheat in single player games... they paid for the game, let them play it however they want to. I personally only have a problem with cheating when it gives any type of unfair advantage in multiplayer online games.

(I don't even care if people cheat single player games to get trophies... gamerscores really don't mean anything at all.)
Beating Ikaruga on 2 machines at the same time should earn you honorary god status.

On the subject of multiplayer, absolutely anything that gives an unfair advantage to one player or another is definitely cheating in my book.

Now back to single player. Everyday Legend mentioned GTA. I would consider the cell phone codes in GTA4 to be cheating. With something like that you can spawn weapons and vehicles or even make yourself invincible. There's no losing condition and THAT really takes the fun/challenge out of a game. In the case of Contra, you get 30 lives and 3 continues with the Konami code. There's still a losing condition.

Glitches/exploits can be a tough sell. Getting infinite 1ups at the beginning of world 8-2 in Super Mario Bros is a glitch but if you're having a bad day, knowing that little green mushroom will be there every time is comforting. On the other hand, climbing out of Blood Gulch in Halo 1 is pretty cheap unless your goofing around with friends. I guess it all comes down to personal preference and whether or not you had fun.
