About
Hi I'm Reece I'm a 15 year old growing up in the UK. I've been in love with video games for about ten years and would love to write about games for a living.

-My favourite games are Super Smash Bros Melee, Kingdom Hearts 1 and Metal Gear Solid 2

-My 1st console was the gamecube

- I currently own a PS3 , a PS vita and a Wii U

- When I'm not playing games I enjoy listening to alternative music e.g. the strokes, the white stripes, etc

- You can find me on ps3 at the Id of ReeceBox due to my friends thinking my head is a bit square

- I am looking to regularly blog on what I have been playing and reviewing played occasionally throwing in an opinion piece.

I welcome any criticism as I look to improve my writing skills further and to use them to put a foot in the door of the video game industry.

Yours sincerely Reece...

DmC : Devil May Cry Ps3 Review

Everyone's favourite demon slayer is back and while quite not as you remember him , overall , developer Ninja Theory have successfully rebooted this franchise after the travesty of devil may cry 4 and as a result have created one of the most exciting and engaging action games in recent memory.

While im not quite this good at these sorts of games I really enjoyed it

First things first lets get this straight, I am in no way a veteran player at these games. Never played Ninja Gaiden , never played Bayonetta. I would say the closest experience I have had to this genre before playing this game is the god of war series or devil may cry 4. I had briefly played heavenly sword but besides that my experience with ninja theory is very little but it is safe to say this game deserves to sell more then it has been. It is top to bottom an amazing experience and to my knowledge has re-invigorated this action/combo-based genre ( as to be quite honest devil may cry 5 wasn't going to happen ) with Metal Gear Rising Revengeance also released recently. I will review MGR as well later down along the line but Its going to be hard for Platinum top this.

I will take this........

......over this any day

Story

Before any old-school devil may cry players get annoyed at what I just suggested above I can confidently stand behind that as my opinion. DmC is better then Devil May Cry 4 in almost every way especially the story. For one Dante is not a quote on quote 'emo' like old-school dmc players were touting. Dante is the same cocky little shit he has always been and not quite as camp as the blonde haired over the top Japanese design was , he still retains the good elements from earlier games while removing the unnecessary traits of past games.

The story itself is quite interesting Dante is Nephilim - half angel and half demon. The game opens with Dante in a strip club taking some angel-women-things back to his trailer. This showed me a more edgy side that has been severely lacking in recent instalments. The world is being controlled by Mundus the demon king who is enslaving the humans via an energy drink , a corrupt news reporter and debt. Mundus previously killed Dante's angel mother Eva and imprisoned his Demon Father Sparda. Dante meets up with his brother Vergil and a human ally Kat. The interesting part about these characters is the relationships present between the three of them. I found the story itself interesting enough to keep me drawn in from beginning to end and without spoiling much I should say certain events later on in the game are very interesting ( in a good way ).

I found this funny, others were not so happy

Graphics

Despite being an Unreal Engine 3 game DmC is really pretty. I played through on ps3 and while nothing made me go wow (ala Uncharted or Journey) It looks very well done and the amount of polish shows. There is a wide variety of colours present throughout and the distinct new direction present in DmC and its a refreshing change from the environments used in the devil may cry of old.

Mundus is a great villain in DmC and his presence is felt throughout the game

Sound

The Music of DmC is spectacular, it fits perfectly and sets the scene for the game as a whole. It does a great job at getting the player pumped for a heated boss fight with a great mixture of metal and electronic music. Put on a great pair of headphones and as long as you don't mind a handful of metal you will enjoy it.

Old Dante can't rock like this

Gameplay

This is the big one , how does the gameplay hold up and to me a player who isn't at all experienced in this genre I found the combat in DmC to be fluid and rewarding. I was frequently obtaining SS ranks throughout (but not SSS as I was playing through on Nephilim/hard difficulty). The sheer amount of weapons at your disposal allows a wide variety in combat. You use L2 and R2 to use your demon and angel weapons respectively. This adds to the combat as it allows you to juggle your enemies with a variety of weapons and obtain that precious S rank. On a harder difficulty the enemies give the player a decent challenge so if you have any experience with these games and consider yourself half-decent at them hard/Nephilim is the way to go. The increase in difficulty will maximise both your enjoyment and playtime but if your not as good at these games you should be able to scrape by on normal/human. (The reason I chose to play on hard despite not being experienced at these games is that one I had heard from various podcasts that normal is not challenging enough and two I had heard that the length of the game would increase substantially with a higher difficulty.

Suck on This Succubus - Dante - DmC

Where DmC goes from a good game to a great game is the boss fights. I found each one of these to be extremely satisfying both on a design perspective and gameplay perspective. The Succubus boss fight which was shown in the demo released in November is pictured above. This fight I found enjoyable despite dying around about ten times the game kept me drawn in and helped be pull through in the end , this is all helped by a killer soundtrack with a mixture of metal and electronic music keeping me as a player pumped for each and every boss fight. As the game goes on it just gets better ending with one of my favourite final bosses in recent memory.

Final Verdict

DmC : Devil May Cry hits the nail on the head. This is exactly how a reboot should be with imersive gameplay , a killer soundtrack , great level design and some of the best boss battles in recent memory. Platinum Games has been put on notice as MGR is going to have to be amazing to top this. Also Put on notice is Crystal Dynamics as the bar has been raised for reboots and Tomb Raider needs to reach that bar. Simply put it when game of the year comes along I will remember this as a strong point of 2013. Capcom get Ninja Theory at work on a sequel right away or I swear to god I'm going to flip out. A must-buy for any fans of devil may cry and this genre as a whole.

What I Played : Ps3 version , Nephilim/Hard Difficulty , spent roughly 15 hours playing

Good: Great Boss Battles
Stimulating Soundtrack
Fluid Combat

Improvements: Lock-On System
Better Camera for large scale enemy encounters
Devil Trigger isn't that amazing

Music. Its important to our movies and its important to our games. Recently I have come to understand the importance of music in our past time of video games. As I have become older and have gained more and more experience with video games I have realised that some of my favourite games of all time have had amazing soundtracks. Today I am going to break down my favourite music in games on a console by console basis.

Soundtrack of the PlayStation 3 - Journey - Breathtaking from start to finish just finished a 2nd play-through and this little game just shows that the hobby we all indulge in can be art It has honestly one of the best soundtracks in video game period and in my opinion the best soundtrack of this generation. My second favourite gaming experience of 2012 only to xcom enemy unknown. Journey is something that has to be experienced by every gamer.

Soundtrack of the Nintendo Wii - Super Smash Bros Brawl - This game embodies music. It has one of the best soundtracks ever assembled combining lots of different music from Nintendo's large assortment of other games. One of the games I have spent the most time with in my life so far and the opening theme is sublime.

Soundtrack of the Gamecube - Super Mario Sunshine - I was tempted to use smash bros melee but decided against it to avoid repetition. Mario Sunshine was no matter what anyone says a good game and it had a great soundtrack. The track that most sticks in my mind is the one that plays when Shadow Mario who (spoilers) is later revealed to be Bowser Jr appears.
( Have not played Wind Waker Planning to when it is re-released on the Wii U in HD)

Soundtrack of the Vita - Gravity Rush - Although the vita has only been around for a year Gravity Rush stands head and shoulders above the rest as not only the best vita game released so far but the best soundtrack in a vita game.(I haven't played Persona 4 yet so no comment on that)

Soundtrack of the PsP - Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker - Any Metal Gear game is worthy of being in this list but Peace Walker has one of the most amazing pieces of music ever seen in the franchise used in quite an emotional moment as well

Soundtrack of the Ps2 - Kingdom Hearts 2 - While the 1st game is my 2nd favourite game of all time the 2nd game has a better soundtrack if not due to this song used in the opening. Hopefully Nomura finishes up on Final Fantasy Versus 13 and gets started on KH3. My personal favourite piece of music in games period.

Notable Emissions
- MGS 4
- Kingdom Hearts 1
- Uncharted Series
- Smash Bros Melee
- Ratchet and Clank 1
- Metroid Prime Series
- Mario Galaxy Games
- Donkey Kong Country Returns
- Rayman Origins
- Kingdom Hearts Birth By Sleep

So How About You ? What are your favourite pieces of music in games and why ?

Nintendo have just had a Nintendo direct almost entirely focusing on the 3ds and while the 3ds having more games announced isn't a bad thing. Nintendo have completely missed the boat with the Wii U. I own a Wii U and as a 15 year old male I don't like the idea of having to constantly defend the "children's console" to my friends. And while some of them are not as informed about the gaming industry as I am some of the points they are making are correct. They joked "There is no games coming out for It" and I replied with Rayman Legends which we all now know is delayed till september (which is sending it to die against grand theft auto) and is going multi-platform. I also replied with Pikmin 3 and besides a few close friends who had a gamecube and grew up with pikmin the majority of people look at pikmin as a stupid Japanese game. This also goes back to the remarks made by polytrons Phil Fish about the state of eastern game development, which in no way I agree with but this shows that the average person does. This is shown by how plenty of Eastern games while regarded as great games by the informed mean nothing to the average person. Bayonetta to us is a great action game while to the average person is a button masher with strange music. These types of games only reach a certain audience and only find that niche of an audience.

When the creator of your franchise is against your decision its a bad sign

While it is all well and good that Nintendo has Bayonetta 2 and The Wonderful 101 as future releases these games only reach a niche market and will not ship units. Now rayman is a multi-platform game the biggest and most mainstream Q1 Wii U release is Lego City Undercover and while I have faith that Lego City will be a great game it is not strong enough to pull in the casual market who play the call of duties , who play the gears of war and you halos and your uncharteds. What Nintendo has is a whole lot of franchises that have slowly slipped into irrelevancy. Ice Climbers , Earthbound and Star Fox have all been dormant for many years and are now considered irrelevant. Nintendo needs to do what capcom have done with the devil may cry series. Star Fox would be great if it was rebooted in retros hands. Give the fire emblem series to atlus for future instalments if shin megami cross fire emblem turns out well. Ice climbers would work well as maybe a downloadable title which could very well pave way for a full length instalment (Nintendo should test the waters with ice climbers to see if gamers are still interested). Earthbound I have the least experience with and the least hope for Itoi has said on multiple occasions that earthbound 4 wouldn't happen but anything is possible in the games industry.

Iwata is speaking Directly to Fruit

What Nintendo needs is new IPs something that speaks to more then that niche crowd. People need more of a reason to buy nintendo consoles then the current roster of nintendo 1st party software. They need to buy some companies such as Platinum or Atlus maybe even Sega to help boost there variety of a software division.

Wind Waker needs to happen and needs to happen now

Sakurai Your Our Only Hope

The other day I was hard on the vita http://www.destructoid.com/blogs/Rwh1hay/why-the-vita-can-still-succeed-244883.phtml and today I have explored the Wii U in detail. Just as I did with the vita I would like to give a quick Round-Up of the Wii U games I have played so far.

Nintendo Land

Simply put it one of the best mini-game collection ever assembled. While not as wide spread as an appeal as wii sports and not as hectic as a wario ware. Nintendo has put together a collection of mini games that show off the potential of there machine. Besides the octopus dance game and monitas irritating voice I cannot fault this collection of mini-games. A homage to everything nintendo with classic songs such as Lost Woods from the Legend of Zelda given an Orchestral Treatment. A must own for any nintendo fan. 8.0/10

Darksiders 2

First things first. I always thought it a disservice to the Darksiders franchise for it to be compared to Zelda. The only game that should be compared to Zelda as being Zelda-Like is Okami. Darksiders is like the bastardised child of Zelda and God of War with Okami being its better older brother. But Darksiders is a great game and Although the recent misfortune of THQ means that it will be while before Darksiders returns Darksiders 2 was a worthy entry in the series and should be praised for its overall direction and mechanics, interesting characters and deep combat system.Although as a gamer I believe If THQ had not had financial difficulties and this game would have had longer to bake it could of stepped out of the shadows of Zelda and Okami as its own entity. 7.5/10

Epic Mickey 2

One word I would use to describe Epic Mickey 2 is Disappointing. I enjoyed Epic Mickey 1 despite its flawed camera system but with Epic Mickey 2 I looked for Junction Point to Improve on the interesting formula of the 1st game. Bad voice acting, Stupid AI , Clumsy Controls and more seem to plague Epic Mickey 2. Junction Point Has Now Closed due to poor sales of this game and that shows that we as consumers are smarter then the publishers may think. Please Warren Spector get back to making great games like Deus Ex and System Shock 2. 4.0/10

New Super Mario Bros U

New Super Mario Bros U is the title I had the most confidence in when I recieved my Wii U on 2012 Christmas Morning. Mario U sadly didn't come on christmas morning but now I have purchased , played and completed the game and Its safe to say I was very pleased with my experience. This should be how Nintendo end the NSMB franchise as then it can go out on a high note. Its the Mario 2d Mario Platforming we know and love and if you have ever enjoyed any of the nsmb games you will enjoy this. Simply put it the best game in the series 9.0/10

ZombiU

In my opinion the best launch title of all the Wii U software and a true return to the original roots of survival horror. After the disappointment of Resident Evil 6 and the more recent action orientation of Dead Space 3. Zombi U is what RE6 should have been. Its the Dark Souls of Zombie games and has split reviewers opinions. The Reviewers who gave Zombi U a low score I an understand why, its poorly made and the graphics are not something you would expect from a 2012 title. But Recently Cliff Bleszinski has gone on record to say how big budget horror games are not going to work. Zombi U retains the horror game feel of old and because of this it is bloody good and bloody scary
9.5/10

Nintendo recently had a Nintendo direct presentation in January showing off new Wii U games. But the problem with this is that these games seem so far away and we as gamers and consumers are in desperate need of new software. I personally believe Nintendo could turn this around like what they have done with the 3ds but at this rate the Wii U could very well become the GameCube of its time and as a Nintendo fan I would hate to see that happen (sales wise).

Come on Reggie You Need to Kick Ass and Make Games

The vita is really really ill

The PlayStation Vita , a failure some may call it and so far on the software side it is a failure with shooters such as resistance and call of duty receiving below average entries in there respective franchises. Although kill zone is in the distant future of September , September cannot come soon enough and besides Keji Inafunes Soul Sacrifice , Media Molecules Tearaway and the aforementioned kill zone mercenary the vitas 2013 line up is all but bear

Can Media Molecules Next Could Be Gem Save The Vita

How can the vita be saved

Price Drop - The vita needs a price drop to turn it around (like the 3ds). The vita is an expensive piece of hardware and to top it off the memory cards only add to the expense. A price drop would benefit as sales would not only increase but it would allow Sony to bundle the vita with either killzone or maybe even the ps4 depending on how the two systems interact. The price needs to drop about Ł50 (approx $75) to sell enough units to become a success.

1st Party Support - Sony get together a bunch of big vita fall releases in time for the holiday season. Release a God of War and get Sony Bend to make Golden Abyss 2 add in killzone mercenary and a price drop and its a sure-fire way to sell vitas. Assassins Creed 3 Liberation reportedly sold 600000 units which considering the install base of the vita this is relatively good numbers. If Sony conjures a strong fall line up and drops the price the 3rd party support with follow suit. This needs to be like the nintendos 3ds turn around of fall 2011 with mario kart , 3d land and the price drop. Sony needs to pull the switch on the vita and fast.

The frustration of Kratos in God of War is Comparable to my Frustration with vita 1st party support

Its common nowadays in games journalism sites such as Destructoid and IGN to read comments from readers complaining about how the vita has no games. While that may be true for the current state there are enough vita titles to go back to that should keep people occupied at the moment. I aim to highlight some of these titles and give a quick review round up as the current vita drought continues :

Uncharted Golden Abyss

Although it was bashed for its gimmicks which personally I believed all were used well except the hand to hand combat swipe mechanic. This was one of the stand out launch titles and is a really good game. The uncharted name almost does it a disservice as the amazingly high standard that naughty dog had set for the home console games couldn't be reached by bend especially as it was probably put out quicker then needed for vita launch. Hopefully Sony Bend can improve in Golden Abyss 2 but all in all as a 1st try its a great launch title. 7.5/10

Wipeout Vita

I can praise this racer till the cows come home. Great launch title on par with the console version. Gimmicks can be turned off if required although they are generally well used. Cross Play feature works great and to top it all off Playstation Plus here in Europe are about to put this on the instant games collection. Although its not the realistic racer such as a Gran Turismo that most are used to once you adjust its a blast. 8.0/10

Sound Shapes

One of the greatest little platformers I have played in the last few years. I would go as far to rank it up there with Rayman Origins as one of the best of them. Mechanics are great, no forced gimmicks, the sound design is the best of any vita game and it is all wrapped up in a cheap cross buy bundle. The demo is up on the store for you to try yourself. A must buy for any vita owner. 9.0/10

Little Big Planet Vita

I am in no way a Little Big Planet fan and personally I like the look of media molecules next game upcoming vita game tearaway better. But LBP vita is in my view the definitive version of the series and was the first that really engaged me as a player. If you enjoy the other games you will love this but don't let it pass you buy if the series hasn't grabbed you yet. 8.5/10

Gravity Rush

Gravity Rush is the best reason to own a vita hands down. I look forward to see it become a franchise as the surprise I was taken by when i first played the game. I became overwhelmed by the sheer polish shown throughout the game. I thoroughly enjoyed It and unless you are completely turned of by the idea of playing any sort of Japanese game you will enjoy it to. Besides realism in games is overrated and the idea of having to suspend your belief when playing games like this is so dated. Games should take you away and transport you to another world and gravity rush does just that 9.0/10

A notable emission from this list is Persona 4 Golden as it hasn't been released here in the UK and I will get round to reviewing it later on. I hope I have shown you readers how perception of the vita needs to be changed and what Sony needs to do to get this handheld back on track. And hopefully if this does occur the first picture on the article will transform into this :
