I must say, this game is one of my favorites. I'm an explosion-holic, so this is right up my alley. Here are some events that have transpired in my play-through this far. Share your fun stories too! Post however you want, a list, dramatic retelling, campfire sing-a-long (Internet win for someone who pulls that off), whatever fits your story.
1. Tutorial level, half of the roof of the science lab flew right above my head. If he had an afro, it would've looked like a slanted plate.
2. Decided to make a remote charge line to ambush the EDF (one of the first missions in Parker where you can ambush from a bridge). Set them up, and as they drove over them, I set it off. The second car went hurling backwards, while the front one barrel-rolled into the bridge, taking out three citizens in the process. At least the bridge went down.
3. Wanted some demo. work done. I drove a car next to a building, but didn't realize an EDF truck was right next to it. I decided to just gun it. Happily, I took out the gunner on top with my car, and as I hit the building, the top collapsed on the truck...and then I blew it up just for laughs.
4. Tagged a soldier. Watching them run with a remote charge on their face/head (I swear it looks like a head crab with a blinking light on it when you place it right) is funny. Its funnier when they return to their squad, only for their squad to run away. Cue obligatory Benny Hill music and you have the funniest situation. Well, until the remote charge fell off. Then I just blew up the EDF group.
5. Made a remote charge line. An EDF carrier was rolling by, and blew it up. The resulting explosion hurled it upwards into a backflip. When I realized it was off the screen, I looked around. It then crashed on my head just as I had looked up.
6. M.O.A.B's are fun. They're really fun when you have 3 trucks following you and you jump out, run across the bridge, and trigger the 9 charges you put on it. What, I had like 30!
7. Nano Forge is the tits. I nanowned (trademarked as of now...maybe) a soldier by destroying the bridge he was on. As he fell, his comrades in a tank just nails him in the back. EDF soldiers fly far.
8. Guerrilla reinforcements are a pain in the ass. I threw a remote charge from behind cover, and I saw it was moving on the mini-map so I detonated it. Turns out a woman decided to be rambo and ran out to attack the EDF, only to be stuck and then blown up. Her explosion took out a group of EDF though, so that was nice. It was like a suicide bomber, but unintentional.
9. Homing rockets are nice. Thermoberic Rockets are better. Trust me when I say this, Wrecking Crew mode gets a lot funner (and shorter) when you use unlimited ammo of those.
10. One of the greatest moments I can remember at the moment. I decided to be a bad ass and chased an EDF troop with my hammer. As I hit him, an EDF truck came by. The troop hit the truck and from the force damaged it. I had already nearly blown the truck to smithereens. When the soldier hit it, it blew up too.
Well, we are approaching the launch of everyone (or at least 99%) of the gaming world's favorite new game, Left 4 Dead. While I know I will be staying up till 2AM (because I'm in Texas, and its being released Valve's time zone, so 12 PST is 2 CST), I wonder how many other D-Toid members are going to be doing the feat, especially having pre-loaded the game. I will suffer tomorrow through class to do it, but damn it if I won't have fun.
A couple of things I was thinking about earlier today made me realize that maybe I should share them with fellow gamers, about the game. Now, must of this might be redundant to you, so I'm not saying "oh I'm smarter and more l337, therefore I pwn j0 mom", but I dare say I haven't heard a lot of people talk about this. Plus, I just think brainstorming as a game community is a great thing.
So, here are my thoughts about Left 4 Dead, the soon-to-be launch, and why i think this will be the greatest game ever.
1. Movie Stereotypes: Gruff, old army guys, comedic relief black guy, biker dude with cocky attitude, girl that will inevitably be rescued no matter what...this game has it all. And now its time prove those stereotypes wrong...or right...who knows
2. The PC version will kick more ass than the console: I'm saying this as a console gamer. Reason?
Valve will be making more campaigns, I know it, and they will be making top-tier ones...for free. Xbox, not so much. And then of course the user-generated content. I personally, after seeing Left 4 Dead, being run on Dustbowl from TF2, am wanting a mode where you have to capture each point in a level before moving on to the next one. Its like a mini-finale in each game. And being a boss zombie in those situations would totally allow you to piss people off...while playing the game right.
3. Community: Its a fact, this game is going to rock. But it really rocks because anti-griefer measures have been taken (see Witch), unless you are on a non-dedicated server. Then good luck fighting 30 witches. Plus, as a gamer community, I see D-Toid having a lot of fun, and then all of the other L4D dedicated communities. A few dicking around moments, but still, great fun.
4. One leg up - We already have a Leeroy Jenkins: This guy not only has the worst luck, but he has the worst plan...that goes oh so wrong. I have declared him Leeroy Jenkins of Left 4 Dead because of 2 phrases...
a) "ABORT! ABORT! ABORT THE PLAN!!!" (said after busting through door, only to be tackled by Hunter)
b) "*crying* ZOMBIE BUKKAKE!!" (cried while being curb stomped by 20 infected)
Enter the hilarity here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GotNTtt1NNQ
5. Steam Community games; All you have to do is make a Steam Community, and you can connect to other games played by community members. I say D-Toid gets on going.
6. "Strategery": Who doesn't love a game where you can make a make-shift barricade with gas tanks, and then blow the zombies to hell...and then have a Smoker lasso your friend and drag him into the fire, where no one can rescue him. I saw it happen on the 1Up show review of this game...strategerize around this.
I could go on, but really, I think you see what I'm doing here. Comment on here, tell me where you agree or disagree, or tell me how far your roflcopter flew after watching ZOMBIE BUKKAKE! Brad.
I look forward to some zombie killing with you D-Toiders.
SteamID RoninZero777
And now I gotta go and get some root beer to drink during playing. good luck...
and
"Gentlemen....its zombie time" (<--new catch phrase to L4D I made...see what I did there?)
Alright, so if you don't know about this game, go to left4dead411.com or any other site for more info. Including this one.
Ok, I'll wait till your done looking.
You've see all there is to see? Great.
I've been excited about this game since I heard about it. Zombie apocalypse? Sweet. Co-op with smart people? That would be great. Re-playable campaign? I plan on going back to the first two stages of the demo now. Basically, so far, this game is great. You really have to focus on team-work, otherwise, like you've seen elsewhere, you are going to be sorry. I attempted to go Rambo a few times...only worked out once (and that was with a machine gun turret set up). Every time I did, the Director would punish me with sending a Hunter or a Smoker my direction. Sweet, isn't it?
The Director is great at keeping the game intense. You'll never play the same game twice, as they have promised. The Director AI is probably one of my favorite technical innovations of the year. Its just sophisticated and great. The only AI I have trouble with are the normal infected...granted, I sped through Normal difficulty just to get a taste because I had to go back to studying. But most normal infected seem oblivious. I'm hoping it was just the difficulty setting. Though, I will mention I was very cautious as I walked through the wasteland that was once a city.
The graphics are pretty great. Nothing that will truly amaze you, but it looks damn good in motion. Plus, zombie decapitations...awesome stuff. There's nothing like turning a corner, having a zombie high-tail it towards you, and then make it barrel roll from a shotgun blast that takes its arm and head. The simple things in life, Valve gets right.
Now, to all loners out there who never want to socialize with people, you are probably wondering how the bots work in single-player. There were a few times it seemed they were clueless, but at all major points of action, they were on their A-game. Seriously, best squad/co-op bots ever. They knew when to heal me, and never let me die from a Hunter or Smoker. In fact, I think the longest it took them to help me from being pinned or constricted was a second and a half or two seconds. They know what they are doing, and will definitely help you out. The command speech wheel works great, that was a bit of learning curve for me (not used to a system like that). So rest assured, your team-mates aren't just meat shields...they're meat shields with brains. They will help you, heal you, cover you, and get pissed if they are in the cone of your shotgun blast. I know I'll enjoy single player.
I haven't gotten to test this game out with other people (hopefully with brains and not "griefers"), because I need to study for a college exam today. Once it is finished, I probably will be hopping on.
So, in short, this demo has shown me this game will be great. Epic great. There were somethings above that I nit-picked. But damn, does the Director know how to make you jump in fright and laugh at the same time. And that, my friends, is all the proof I need that this game is going to be great. Great fun for everyone.
And now, I close with a little signature thing I will be doing with anything I refer to Left 4 Dead or other zombie-related stuff (a mix of team fortress 2 and an anime):
I'm in college attending Texas A&M.
I play guitar and write a lot of music.
Check out my band (hard rock music), Off the Zodiac. www.myspace.com/offthezodiac
I listen to rock, hard rock, and metal.
As far as videogames, I'll play anything that's good. I probably like action the most, first or third person. But for some real fun, get me in a racing game. I pretty much rip it up in those.
Currently, I'm playing:
Half-Life 2 (another run through, with SMOD...extremely fun with impulse 101)
Left 4 Dead
Rock Band 2
Grid
Super Smash Bros. Brawl
Fallout 3
and soon, Prototype, The Conduit, and much later, Split/Second.
