LAST UPDATE: Dec. 26, 2010

Fellow Dtoiders always welcome to hit me up for play via these gaming networks/services...

Xbox Live: joblong
Playstation Network: J_ToSaveTheDay
Steam: sonikkuj

Also on Blizzard Battle.net, but since that's more intimate information (RealID!), please request via PM to be added as a friend. I mostly play World of Warcraft on Battle.net, but I do own Starcraft II (and suck horribly at it!).

Requesting aid from the D-Toid community!
Roek | 4:43 PM on 09.19.2009 14 comments

Hello all fellow D-Toiders!

I'd like to send a request for help from the D-Toid community... And no, it will not cost you any money. Just some time.

So I'm a college student, and I'm in my 5th and last year of my undergraduate program (an extra year has been tacked on because I've switched majors a few times and I transferred schools). This semester, I have the pleasure of being part of a course called "Writing Online," and one of my tasks throughout the semester will be to maintain a wordpress blog (because it's free).

I got to chose my subject, and I decided I wanted my blog to be all about sort of trying to expose the gamer experience to the non-gamer, hopefully to combat negative stigma that U.S. culture places on gamers. I feel that we often get portrayed as any combination of the following: lazy, anti-social, violent, teenaged, macho-male, weakling-male, or any other number of negative ideas you've probably had placed on you by SOMEONE in your life as a gamer.

So, I'm not sure a lot of people will be reading the blog, but I do know that my class will eventually get around to looking at it, at least. I plan to open a section called "Meet the Gamer" or something to that effect, though I think it will be called "Meet the D-Toider" since I only plan to ask for help here.

Keep in mind that the point of my blog is not to alienate non-gamers from us, but rather to try and demonstrate that we're just normal folks, too... So if you'd like to help, I would strongly encourage that no one say anything completely negative about non-gamers. It's my own view that everyone's got problems, and gamers are no different -- but that's no reason we can't be proud of how we chose to spend our time with videogames anyways.

I don't know exactly how I'll collect your responses just yet... I may open a new gmail account specifically for that end.

For now, I just kind of want to field everyone's interests with this idea. Please comment away if you think this might be a good idea or you have some ideas already that you'd like to share with me. It's my first time blogging, so I don't really have an established "voice" yet, as you'll probably gather from the few posts that are already up and the general lack of solid formatting on the blog so far. You can check it out here: pressinbuttons.wordpress.com

I'll check back later and see what you all think!

Is this post awesome? Vote it up!

I would definitely contribute. I'm a 47 year old female. I'm retired from a career in Human Resources and currently a housewife... and gaming keeps my mind active and gives me a lot of social contact that I lost when I retired from the workforce. Those are definitely positives that may help change some views of gamers in general! :)
(oh, and my husband is 52 and just took up gaming about 2 years ago... I might be able to get him to add something as well!)

This sounds interesting and relevant to my own views as a gamer. I'd be happy to contribute, so keep me updated when you open an account for submissions.

I'm down as a 24 yr old female college student gamer/editor over at co-optimus.com, laid off from the Medical industry, willing to contribute to a positive view on gamers/geeks in general!

Hit me up: Kpawlowski [at] co-optimus.com (all-for co-op gaming, which is social in and of itself.)

I'd toss a few words your way, if you're interested in the viewpoint of a slightly "offbeat" gamer.

Great, thanks for all the interest so far, guys. Seems we have a pretty wide range of folks willing to participate. I will try to contact everyone that gave contact info within the next week.

Just as a forwarding note going into this... I don't expect it to get big. Would be nice, but I don't feel I have the professional skills to really sell it or anything. But the people it will reach for certain -- the people in my class -- might be interested to hear from you all later in the semester when we look into one another's blogs.

Anyhow, again, I send my gratitude for the response so far!

Opened an email account for the purpose of the wordpress blog specifically, pressinbuttons@gmail.com. Feel free to send submissions! Say whatever you want about yourself as a gamer that you don't mind sharing with the public, and keep in mind that your audience will be non-gamers and fellow students (so please keep language SFW). I prefer Word 98/03 format files, but willing to take whatever will open in Word. If you'd like to include images to go with your contributions, feel free -- just understand that I'm not terribly good at any sort of web design (even the most basic forms) so expect images to be included in very simple ways (at the beginning or end of posts on the wordpress page, for example).

Again, the URL for the blog is pressinbuttons.wordpress.com. It's still rough, but feel free to check it out any time. Not all submissions will be featured on the front page, as I am required each week to do an original post of my own... Most of your submissions will be available on a separate section on the blog, but I will try to notify any readers about updates to the contributions section.

Thank you all very much, ladies and gents of Dtoid! Again, this is the only place I'll be asking for such contributions, so I will put a link to Dtoid for anyone that gets curious, and I'll make sure to note that all contributions come from this community specifically.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?

Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
