Well after two weeks of holidays, partying and being desconnected from the gaming world I'm back in the saddle. Wasting time at work, and playing video games :)
So, what better way to start a new year of gaming with a healthy and nostalgic rant? And what is the target of today's venting outburst?
These guys, my once beloved Shiny entertainment.
Have a look at shiny's games pre-2000 and you'll see some of the most wildly creative and imaginative games out there. Earthworm Jim, Wild 9, Messiah, Sacrifice, MDK, my god these were good games and still are. And you just never saw anything like them which was just plain awesome.
But then things all started to go pear shaped in 2003 when Enter the Matrix came out.
Now that game wasn't all that bad, not a great title but okay for a licensed game.
...okay it was shit. But I felt that shiny could leave all that behind them and bounce back with some gaming awesomeness with a new title. But what happened? Shiny go and make ANOTHER matrix game. Bad move? In my mind, yes. Licensed games rarely play well, they just sell well, nuff said.
And now we're in 2007/2008, and I find out about a licensed game for the movie The Golden Compass, and to my horror see that it was developed by none other than Shiny.
WTF?! Enough with the licensed games! Other developers are making licensed games but why must Shiny, who had such a great track record for wildly bizarre, creative and fun games resign themselves to pumping out movie games for the last 7 years. 7 YEARS!!! Come on!
Ugh well I think I've ranted enough for now, but I doubt I'm the only one that thinks it's about time Shiny thought up a new I.P. and brought back some of that crazy gaming magic that we all used to know and love.
Oh and Planet Moon studios, you guys have been good but I see what you did there. Smarty Pants for the Wii? Come on we need a next-gen Giants or MDK already!
Sincerely,
Some guy on the internet who should be working right now.
Cheers
