Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater. La Pucelle Tactics. Phantom Brave. Final Fantasy Tactics. Dark Forces.

Why am i listing games? They are the NTSC games i own for the PS2 (and PS1 with the last two), and i've never played them. NEVER.

Couple that with the fact i want to get Persona 3 special edition, and FES, it's made me realise i want (need) a US PS2.

The problem is, in the UK, modchipping and the like has been hushed up. Now it's done out the back of moving vans by people sporting eyepatches and a soldering iron in replace of a hand. Scary bunch. So yeah i'm at loss. However there is a light at the end of the tunnel.

Next month i'm heading to the US of A's. This means the land of US pricing (which is beautiful compared to the crap they slap on us in the UK), and NTSC consoles i can play NTSC games on. Yay me! But what about the future? This is what i've thought about recently... do the US PS3's still have hardware backwards compatibility? Should i drag a US PS3 back with me instead of a PS2?

ADVICE PLEASE!

Is there any other (easy to use, i'm not a solder king, i'm more likely to solder my fingers to the board than anything else) way of getting import games to play on the PS3? I don't seem to see swapmagic anymore for sale.

I would just get a PS2 if I were you. The PS3 has region coding for some movies, though no games, so it seems like an easy purchase, but it's really only useful if you're going to be importing a lot of movies.

Besides, the PS2 is WAAAAAAAAAY cheaper.
Strangely enough, I learned quite a bit about this the other day when attempting to purchase the PAL version of Ico for the ps2. What I've learned is as follows. You can use a simple region unlocking disk to to play foreign games on your ps2. However, in the case of the new ps3 models that use software to run ps2 games, I can't say if they would work. So my suggestion is to buy a american ps2 and play those games on that. However, the games STILL may not work because of a differemce in the TV manufacturing process between the UK and US. The ps2's here are incredibly cheap, also.

Or of course you can modchip your ps2, but I wouldn't reccomend that.
I wouldn't mind buying a PS2 for importing from the US myself. Does anyone know any good games sites that will ship to Ireland and the UK?
Superhobo: Try http://www.videogamesplus.ca/ Alot of their customers are actually in the UK.

liam: yeah, seems best to get a pS2 from the US.

DVD: Damn your avatar is scary. I just thought, as the PS3 is region free for games, i can play PAL games or import US games... but it would play US PS2 games too. However a bit of research says that BC on PS3 isn't possible now, that it was only on the 60/80gb versions? Hmm.
Buy the PS2. Its a great idea
just get a PS2. You'd have a hard time finding a 80 or 60 gig around here in regular retail and most other places will want more just cause you can't get others at retails.

seriously just get a PS2 then start ordering from either play-asia or NCSX.com (I think it's NCSX. google it.) play-asia is as usual the standard. NCSX is awesome as they have same day shipping as long as it's ordered before 5p.m. Eastern time. Only thing about NCSX is that they cost a bit more...
I'm with Shin on this one. Just bag a cheap PS2 while out there. They are still selling them in the U.K for £50, so you should easily be able to pick on up in the U.S for £25 (after pound to dollar conversion)

I recently purchased a Swap Magic 3.6 to run my import games on a U.K PS2 (you could buy a Swap Magic 3.6 or 3.8 and U.K PS2 Slim instead), however I may also just buy a U.S PS2, now they are cheap enough. Using a Swap Magic reqiures a bit of fiddling with you PS2, so a PS2 Slim or changing your PS2 original to a flip top PS2 case are the easiest ways to import joy, if you like modding).

Ganbatte.
If you're tech-savvy and not afraid to go into shady, grey legal territory, you can always try installing an HDloader on on one of the older, fat PS2s.
Personally, I haven't had too much success with mine, and I'm back to playing regular old physical media.
Yeah i was looking for the 80gb, and couldn't find anything in the US stores online.

Ok US PS2 it is. Just need to get something that's not black, so i don't get the one mixed up with my slimline :P Maybe silver or white, or pink! Black and pink PS2s. That would be kinda neat.
Sour: I looked at that ages ago, mostly so i could transfer my legal games to the HDD, then store them away nice and safe, while still playing them. My half sister who had the PS2-Fat then decided to gave it away to my stoner uncle, and i kinda forgot about that option.

Would i still need swap magic to play an import game off the HDD? Hmm.
