Sin & Punishment: I Need More Games Like This
Riser Glen | 7:55 AM on 10.04.2007 26 comments

It came out the day I got a new WiiPoints card. I went around asking bunch of DToiders how I should spend it, asking for their opinions, to see what games they would recommend. 100% of them said "Get Sin & Punishment." Oddly enough, I never heard of the game until then. So I watched a few videos on YouTube and read a few reviews. All of them started getting me interested in the game. But when I heard that the game was made by Treasure (the makers of Ikaruga,) my interest was peaked.

So I downloaded the game and booted it up. Immediately, I started sucking at it. I thought the controls were awkward and the game was too frantic. But I wasn't going to let my 1200 WiiPoints go to waste, so I kept at it. I went into training mode, changed the control scheme to "Type 3" and started playing levels over and over again.

Pretty soon, it all came together. I started moving correctly, started learning how to properly use special movements/options and started to really, really enjoy the game.

Sin & Punishment is an arcade shooter in every sense. The goal is to blow stuff up, stay alive and get points. There's a story in there too (along with English voice acting,) but to be honest, I haven't really payed any sort of attention to it. All I know is that I am addicted to the gameplay, and the only mission I am on is the beat my old scores.

The video above is a good demonstration of what Sin & Punishment is all about. Shooting and slashing your ways through various enemies on the screen while jumping, double jumping, strafing and side-dashing your way around projectiles and obstacles while getting points and progressing your way through the (too me, irrelevant) story. And as you progress, the levels, characters/monsters and action become more crazy and fun.

It's games like this that remind me why I play video games (sorry for the Cliché remark, but it's true.) It makes me miss actual point systems. Systems that give you a physical number to improve on by becoming better, not just points for the sake of completing mundane tasks (every time I hear someone brag about their "gamerscore", I laugh till it hurts.)

Using my new rating system that I just made up, Sin & Punishment gets a:

I am very much digging this game as well.

I agree with your rating system but I raise it a Steve Martin in "The Jerk."

What are the points on the rating system? I realize Groundhog Day is pretty high, but is it below Stripes and Meatballs? I know that Charlie's Angels is probably the lowest possible score, but where does Ghostbusters fall?

Oh yeah, S&P is awesome.

@Dan

I use the classic controller. I personally found it a bit easier to side-dash in type-3. I never used the GC controller on it though. I should give that a shot.

I thoughts the controls felt off, but i was playing with the default scheme. It felt as though it was build mostly for the N64 controler layout and felt awkward on a gamecube one. I'll have to try the different types though, see if I can find one that feels better.

I really enjoy it (though there isn't a Treasure game I'm adverse to).

question..
groundhog day is good.. but is that like a 3/5?
in my mind the bill murray scale goes like this...
5/5 - caddyshack, ghostbusters, stripes
4/5 - what about bob, kingpin, rushmore
3/5 - goundhog day, royal tennenbaums
2/5 - lost in translation, life aquatic
1/5 - garfield

So how much Japanese is left in the game now? I know they turned on the English menus by default instead of having to unlock them, but did they even leave in things like Japanese subtitles for the movies?

Woh woh woh, your scale is waaay off. Ground hog day is great but if we're talking all his movies here you have got to royal tenebaumsa and lost in translation on there...There is a reason a got a nomination for lost in transaltion, amazing film and amazing performance. Great review by the way.

Amazing game. Been rocking it all week. Controls took a little getting used to at first but that is just a minor complain.

Treasure FTW
