For some of you, you may have seen this already when it came out a few days ago, so, old is old, yadda yadda.. o_O
But, for the rest of us, I just watched the Angry Video Game Nerd's (AVGN) rant on both Superman for the ATARI 2600 and NES and what can I say? I loved Superman on Atari, but, right before I watched it, I had the faint echos of another DToid'ers words in my head .. It made me wonder would 'da Nerd actually be funny??
For cerial, it was only after hearing Mxyzptlk's words in my head 3 times over and over.... "He isn't funny.", that I stopped hesitating and pressed the PLAY button..
So, is he really still funny after all?
Quick, but unfulfilled answer: Maybe he isn't that funny.. Or maybe he IS! Read on and find out! Or, Watch on and comment out! lol
Since GameTrailers has so often failed in embedded.. watch the trailer here.. and to see the clip here is a FLASH link, or to view it in any flavor quicktime or windows media player look around GT upon clicking the flash link.
I laughed throughout his narrative of Superman on the Atari 2600, although he is much more annoyed by it than I am. In fact I love Superman for the Atari.. 11/10! It is challenging, and yes, seemingly pointless or illogical at times.. AVGN: "Why does the background repeat in different colors," etc., but my take on it was back then, (when I was a little little kid) I remember I loved the challenge, graphics and the discovery that awaited every turn and screen away. Map?? WTF?? You memorized the map!
Even though I thought his critique was too much, my memories of Superman (A2600) was too fun to let him get to me.. Until.. DUN DUN DUNNN.. He reviewed Superman (NES).. Then, I was dead silenced.
Bitch here.. Bitch there.. Fuckety fuck fuck over there..
Ok, I never played Superman for NES, and now I think I NEVER will. His biting critique was harsh and thick. I didn't laugh...... UNTIL........ He compared Spiderman and Superman in a way of wonder - AVGN: "Why the hell would Superman use the subway? Couldn't he just fly there? That would be like asking Spiderman to: instead of web slinging from building to building, oh no, take the subway instead and walk"..
Comedy Gold.
All in all, his video may just be a teaser for his next exciting episode of fan service: AVGN Reviews SUPERMAN 64. But, I still lol'ed.
What? You didn't? Please use the box below to express the reasons why. Oh, and be sure to include if you played superman on whichever system, and if you watched it sober (not me) or not (like me). Even if you did LOL a little, lemme know, thanks for your comments and feedback.
i have played superman for the 2600, and i don't remember having any idea of what the fuck was going on, or what i was doing. so, i guess that it was just enough to keep me entertained for 5-10 minutes.
don't worry so much about what other people consider to be funny. look at dane cook. he sucks and is not funny, yet millions of people are obsessed with him.
The Nerd has jumped the shark/nuked the fridge a long time ago. But I still somehow like watching his videos, most of the time they are at least entertaining.
@ ParaParaKing.. Yea, I admit that. I don't go out of my way to boast on the Atari 2600 generally.. But, to me, the best games were Superman, Spiderman, Missle Command, Pitfall(..Activision games), and Space Invaders.. Almost all the rest AVGN could have dissed all day and I probably wouldn't give a crud. But, that may be why he chooses the good games he reviews for slaughter. I dunno.
I agree with Perry Simm, AVGN has had better moments but at least he is still damn entertaining. I was really let down when at the end after showing all the requests for superman64 he gave in. I thought it would have been funnier if he said something like "No, fuck all of you, everyone knows how bad Superman64 before and hundreds of people have made videos tearing the game a new asshole. I won't do it." But alas, he gave in, whatever. I'm still waiting on the R.O.B. review that (I thought) was promised at the end of the NES accessories review.
I found this episode better than the last few because he actually gets angry for a change.
AVGN used to be pretty hilarious but all the recent videos don't make me laugh anymore. They are still entertaining but no where near as good as his older stuff. It seems like he's holding back in the later videos
AVGN is a funny guy, but he used to be better. Well actually I dunno, he used to be 100% good but now his stuff seems to be real hit or miss wether it's good or not. I didn't even watch the whole way through the one before this....
the nes Superman was obviously aimed at kids. thats why the sprites are designed like that and him being in his 20s bitching about the style of the game is rediculous. I've never really found the appeal in his commentaries. He bitches about a game back in the early stages of the consoles using down to go into doors instead of up. thats something that has been a norm that has grown out of over 30 years of games. You can't just expect every game in the beginning to have originally had a blueprint on how games are supposed to be.
I really don't understand why so many people find AVGN amusing. I keep watching his videos, and I can't remember the last time I've even cracked a smile at one of them. Maybe it's because I've played pretty much all of the games he covers, and had the exact same observations - twenty years ago, when I was nine. Maybe it's because people like Yahtzee, Fargo, Sharkey, or even Seanbaby do game comedy so much better. Maybe it's because I find the character he plays completely obnoxious. Most likely it's all of these things.
I'm sure he's a nice guy, and if any of you find him entertaining, awesome. Just like with the people who dig Dane Cook, Carlos Mencia, or Larry the Cable Guy, I just can't see the appeal at all.
Heh, ya, I know what you mean.. Maybe I always laughed WITH AVGN, now after this last one tho' I might be laughing AT him more in a way, since like I said, I played the heck out of Superman.. Now, if there was just a Wonder Woman game (on the 2600) that everyone could agree that was laughable... At least maybe a consensus is somewhat reached now. lol

I can't wait for Superman 64.
I played it and took it back the same day I got it.
It seems like you have really thick RetroGoggles for Superman for the Atari.

I meant the Superman 64 review, just thought I'd clear that up.

Also, I never watch anything sober, ever.

his silver surfer review was spot on though.
