After reading an article today, written by known 360 fanboy Jim Sterling, I was very moved by much of what I read in the comments section. Since we all know Sterling to be something of a tyrannical ogre, I felt inspired to write a brief rebuttal to his "article" and to his nasty retorts in the comments of said article. Destructoid has shown itself to be a community in which those who have differing opinions, can be given a forum in which to do so intelligently and civilly. I hope that this article will provide a voice for the voiceless and all those poor souls who, like me, are forced to read through his oppressive writings. However, for the remainder of this blog, I will do my best to remain polite and try to logically and coherently point out all of the many reasons (several spotted by fellow members, who will remain nameless so as not to expose them to Sterling's inevitable wrath) that Jim's article is just plain wrong, in every sense of the word.

I hope those of you who feel similarly will read on.

Many of you are probably wondering why I chose that particular header image (pictured above) for this article. Well, seeing as how I hope this blog will be a general and overall rebuttal to Sterling's, I decided to make my header image part of this counter-argument. As pointed out by a fellow member, Sterling's header image...nay, all of the header images he employs are, to put it simply, "smutty filth". There is no place for such pornography on the internet, James. I understand that, like the aforementioned member pointed out, you are probably very lonely and feel the need to subject us to such imagery to make us understand your loneliness; however, I suggest you go out and try to find yourself a nice wife. Maybe by having a family, you might not feel the need to force your lonely perspective on the rest of us. I present to you an example of acceptable imagery. Above we see a family, FULLY clothed, and enjoying a plate of apples with their dog; a breath of fresh air on this site, I assure you. Please remember this image, Jim, before you feel tempted to post another image of a woman wearing a blouse.

Now to move on to the actual content of the "piece". Sterling begins his diatribe by pointing out that the new title, Hard Rain (I think some of you in the comments section might be misinformed on the name), from Quantic Dream is marketing itself as being "film quality"; which I think we can all agree, while probably effective marketing for the uninitiated, isn't necessarily productive for the gaming industry as a whole since many, though not all, developers and gamers are hoping to encourage the medium of videogames to take pride in what makes it different and unique from other forms of art. That being said, it was what followed that reasonable and defensible claim that I think many took issue with. Sterling went on to attack Hard Rain; saying things like: "It's a disservice to videogames..." and "There's a real problem...". A problem, indeed...a problem, indeed.

I know many of you are split on whether Hard Rain will be a true "game" or simply a movie that plays on the screen while "you just press buttons" (as one member eloquently put it). While I personally agree with the latter sentiment and hope that one day we will be free from a system that uses pictures and buttons altogether, I will go ahead and charitably approach this article from what I feel is the more sympathetic perspective held by many members; that Jim Sterling is attacking this game without having even given it a chance. Perhaps, as one member pointed out, his "fatness is going to [his] head", but even an understandable condition like 'head-fatness' doesn't excuse his need to condemn the game without trying it first. Let's pretend for a moment that Quantic Dream is, in fact, trying to do something new and different with our preconceived notions of story, presentation, gameplay, and interactivity. If that "were" the case, I think most reasonable gamers and human beings would find it tasteless and lacking in decency to condemn such an effort without even experiencing it. I hope that once you've had a chance to play the game, you might reconsider your stance. In the words of one member "Give it a chance".

However, the title of this article is not "Is Jim Sterling doing Decency a disservice?", something we already know for certain. I'd like to briefly examine the effects that the article in question and, in fact, all of Jim Sterling's articles are having on Destructoid as a community. Now I'm sure many of you will expect me to condemn Sterling's articles because of the harmful and contagious opinions he espouses and because of the membership requirement that forces us to read and comment on them. I don't like it any more than the rest of you. However, that being said, consider for a moment the result of those heinous pieces of writing. They have all brought together this community in an effort to speak out against our dictatorial leader. Without Jim and his articles, some of us might not have anyone to make fun of for being overweight or for having thoughts that weren't ours first. Jim is the necessary evil; he's not the villain this site needs, he's the villain we deserve. I say, 'Three Cheers for Jim Sterling!' We can always remember that however terrible his writing may be, it always manages to bring the best and brightest of our community together against him.

I'd finally like to briefly address Mr. Sterling, himself. I understand that you aren't capable of correctly understanding how "GAME DEVELOPER ADVERTISES AND MARKETS GAME TO PUBLIC", but try to "open your eyes and take the twinkie off your mouth", put it in your mouth instead. Don't speak out against Hard Rain because it's comparing itself to a film, remember that "comparisons is how the brain works". I just think it would be a shame if your ignorance about what you were writing about, your impatience and inability to properly read the materials you were criticizing, and your quick temper fueled by blind loyalty to your previously held beliefs, were all responsible for more "articles" that, like this one, "turn[ed] everyone against the game". I hope you learned something here, Jim. I know the rest of us haven't.

Telling Sterling to use logic is like telling Ric Flair not to bleed.

It's not going to work, he's regressed into a wannabe controversial Adam Sessler persona who exists only to generate hits for the site and start flame wars. If he wasn't an employee of Destructoid he would have probably been banned a while ago for being a flame-baiting troll.

I stopped reading after "written by known 360 fanboy Jim Sterling".
I loled.
@SephirothX and Ace829

Thank you for supporting the point made in this article with your comments.
@Richard
I hear where you're coming from. I just felt the need to make a Ric Flair reference (I think it's that whole "I just watched the Royal Rumble" thing...)
Yay, another "legitimatecriticismlegitimatecriticismLOLJIMISFATlegitimatecriticism" type of thing.

I don't get it. Of course you have every right to criticize Jim's writing if you don't like it, but who exactly is forcing you to read Jim Sterling's articles? If you can't stand his writing, you do have the option to not read his articles and read the articles of the many other people who write for Destructoid.

Also, when did it come to pass that a man can't have a family and admire the female figure at the same time?
@Poe
In defense of the poster, while it's true that nobody is forcing him to read Jim's articles it is however getting to the point were there's at least one Sterling Troll-Fest on the main page a day, or at least 5 in a week. It's getting to the point where it's just getting too hard to avoid.
I really see Jim as a PS3 guy tbh
I'm curioius to know exactly what the op wants. Is it his resignation? His style of writing to change?
I can't help but wonder if perhaps the original poster is taking hs games a little too seriously if he feels the need to create such a lengthly blog which essentially defends a video game (heavy rain) and takes pot shots at one of Destructoids staff.

In short I would say get a life. You don't have to read jims articles. Peace be upon you and grow up.
@All

To those who are genuinely curious about why I wrote this or who feel I'm being inappropriate towards Jim, take a look at the comment (#58) that I made in Mr. Sterling's similarly named article on the homepage. If the two pieces of writing seem to reflect irreconcilable opinions about the man, then perhaps you've misread one of them. If things are still unclear, please never read "A Modest Proposal" by Jonathan Swift.
I don't really care what your position is on the argument, it was just really fun to read this article. This is the funniest thing I've read in a long time.
The thing is, you're not forced to read any of his articles. Personally I only read select articles on the front page... mostly for news, and spend most of my time in the c-blogs. You have a choice of where you want to spend your time here... and a choice of what you read.

Regarding the article images used... I too often feel that there is too much use of "boob" shots to attract a demographic that is likely a vast minority (13-16 year old virginal boys). However, that being said... those pictures do attract comments, controversy and are suited to a website that seems to parody "gamers". There seems to be a subtle humour in that there are outrageous fanboy comments made, use of slutty pics and other "typical gamer" headlines and articles here - though underlying this is a sense of mockery. Possibly you don't see this, but I think if you read between the lines you might (or maybe it's my own rationalization... but honestly, some of the stuff is too stupid to be real).

Regarding the article on Heavy Rain... I haven't read it yet (again I mainly stick to the c-blogs) but the controversy he causes obviously encourages participation on the site. I do agree that the way he handles negative comments actually can discourage members and prompt them to look for other sites - I've heard this from several people, but overall, it seems that controversy generates hits on the site and Jim seems to be masterful at creating controversy (possibly he needs to be a little more relaxed or fun in his comments and not seem to be personally attacking the OP, regardless of the provocation. This seems to be one thing that drives people nuts).

Meh... he's just doing his job. There are lots of people to read here, again, if his writing bothers you, don't read it. Read articles or blogs by other people. If you read his stuff often enough, you'll see a sense of humour there... he's pretty equally virulent towards both the PS3 and 360 and seems to be able to create a fanboy impression regardless of the platform.
Referring to a guy by name other than his posted pen name ("James") makes you look like a prick. I'm not sure if that was your intent. Don't be that guy.

Also, Jim Sterling's married, dude.

Separately, I think criticizing Hard Rain pre-release is a good thing, if that's what's going on. Its also probably good to call it by its correct name Heavy Rain.

That's all I got. Enjoy and keep reading!
Im not sure if this has been addressed but Hard Rain is a film with Morgan Freeman and Christian Slater. Anyway idk why hes considered a 360 fanboy tbh im new, but i thought the article was kind of out there. now a days thats all devs say that their games have Hollywood type scenes and production values. so it does seem hes picking on Heavy Rain for whatever reason and not just the subject in general thats pretty old tbh.
I'd contend that these articles do a greater disservice to the community, but I'd rather say that people in martketing are annoying, possibly inhuman.

Stop trying to tear the community a new one, go play a game.
Since I never expected this to go on for so long and since I'm starting to feel guilty that so many people are getting upset and nobody seems to have clued in, I'll just go ahead and reveal that this article is a joke. It's just a sarcastic joke, in the same vein as the Colbert Report. That's why all the facts are wrong (Hard Rain, Sterling's marital status, etc.) and why it's mostly nonsensical. I assumed most people would catch on when I called a picture of a woman wearing a shirt (the header picture of Sterling's article), pornography and offered a picture of Puritans as a "suitable" substitute. I just wanted to write a satirical response to the train wreck that happened in the comments section of Sterling's opinion piece. It frustrated me to see so many people miss the point of a simple opinion piece. Ironically, the same thing happened here. This is just a tongue-in-cheek response to that whole mess. I thought people would catch on and find it funny, considering how popular many of Sterling's Videogame Show videos (a feature in which he is purely satirical) are. Maybe now, some of you might look at Jim's article and the subsequent comments and then reread this piece and have a laugh. If, with this knowledge, people still find this to be an offensive or divisive piece of writing or if you just hate sarcastic humor, I apologize. I'll try to be more obvious with any jokes from now on. For the record, I'm a big Jim Sterling fan and I stand by most everything he's written and I'm eagerly looking forward to his Heavy Rain review. Sorry again for irking so many people.
Uh, the way they're marketing it is a problem. They want to sell the game as a movie and not as a game.

As much a people complain about the Wii skewing "casual" at least its drawing people into play video games. Isn't that the point?

This game is a point-and-click adventure trying to pass itself off as a movie. Not even Shenmue, Phoenix Wright or Myst, Broken Sword and others were ever as pretentious as Heavy Rain is. Those games celebrated the fact that they are games, Heavy Rain celebrates itself as a movie.

And since Ace Attorney Investigations will pride itself on being a game, guess what's getting my money this month? I can get a movie from Redbox for a buck if i want a real movie.
I'm afraid that no matter how far society comes, the tongue is impossible to spot in the cheek for some people.

Also; every time you explain irony to people who don't get it, a hipster loses his fruity scarf...so keep up the good work, I guess!
"I understand that, like the aforementioned member pointed out, you are probably very lonely and feel the need to subject us to such imagery to make us understand your loneliness; however, I suggest you go out and try to find yourself a nice wife."
"Perhaps, as one member pointed out, his "fatness is going to [his] head", but even an understandable condition like 'head-fatness' doesn't excuse his need to condemn the game without trying it first."
-He played the game. You love Sony.

"it always manages to bring the best and brightest of our community together against him."
-this whould be YOU????

Well I have another article for you:
http://www.destructoid.com/fact-ps3-fanboys-are-the-worst-149259.phtml

"It doesn't matter whether or not the fanboys have played, or even like, the games in question. If the game's exclusive to the PS3, you WILL give it a high score or you shall live to see the wrath of enraged Sony fans. "

"The worst thing about being on top is the fall to the bottom, and maybe the transition from PS2 dominance to PS3 heel-dragging has had a damaging effect on the fanboy psyche, leaving them vulnerable and insecure. Maybe fanboys are suffering from a severe case of paranoid delusion, brought about by denial that the PS3 is in third place when once Sony was leading the charge.

Or perhaps they just have tiny penises. Who knows? "
Since I never expected this to go on for so long and since I'm starting to feel guilty that so many people are getting upset and nobody seems to have clued in, I'll just go ahead and reveal that this article is a joke. It's just a sarcastic joke, in the same vein as the Colbert Report. That's why all the ...

Not funny, not sarcastic, just crap.
@augustoaag: D'aaaw... somebody couldn't take a joke so they decided to criticize the article both before and after they realized they'd been had. How cute. "Hard Rain" should have tipped people off right away that this wasn't serious.
Heavy Rain: "Because shaking orange juice cartons > everything else ever shake remote shake"
Jim Sterling trolls whatever he feels like at the time. He doesn't like the 360, or the PS3, or the Wii. He's so odd, and should be fired pretty much.
"I'll just go ahead and reveal that this article is a joke. It's just a sarcastic joke, in the same vein as the Colbert Report. That's why all the facts are wrong (Hard Rain, Sterling's marital status, etc.) and why it's mostly nonsensical."

Traffic was held up like mad for a giant arrogant police funeral motorcade. Fucking pathetic.

- Jim Sterling wrote on the 25th January in his twitter

When criticized by various people for such a disrespectful statement, Jimster's replies are;

Excuse me for thinking that causing major traffic problems just because OMG COP is arrogant.

Oh dear I upset people for not elevating cops above the status of Gods.

FUCK YEAR AMERICA!

That motorcade was less for the dead cop, more for the egos of the live ones.

I don't automatically give respect out to someone based on career choice.

And Jimster goes on and on defending, in his eyes, that perfectly normal statement. Jimster does humanity a diservice.
twitter

bbcode fail, dammit.
Glad to see people are writing blogs as fail as the article and the comments of said article.
Sarcasm's a hard sell on the internet, man. It helps if people either know that you're not a blathering jackhole in the first place or you go so extreme that its barely sarcasm anymore.

Seriously, people have written this same sort of article with a straight face before. Its sad.
I stopped reading after "written by known 360 fanboy Jim Sterling".

Pathetic.
Oh, and if it's a joke, you need to try harder. This was less outrageous than some of the ludicrously stupid statements some of these morons have made.
Wow. Have you even read Jim's articles? Utterly (Is that with two ts?) pathetic. I don't have a problem with you disagreeing with him, but calling him a fanboy and saying that he is doing a diservice to Destructoid is just juvenile. You, sir, are doing a diservice to the Destructoid Cblogs.

No, seriously... you're an idiot. Besides, everyone knows that Jim loves the PS3.
This was a joke? Doubtful. Don't back away when the heat is on, stand up and defend your position.
Fucks sake I can't believe how many people took this literally. Well done, Richard. A+ would read again.
OMG JIM STERLING IS SO CONTROVERSIAL AND BAD FOR DTOID! I CAN'T BELIEVE THEY KEEP A WRITER ON STAFF WHO FORMS INFORMED OPINIONS! WHY CAN'T THEY JUST GET BRAD NICHOLSON TO WRITE EVERY ARTICLE!
Very, very funny. I like the fact that it sits on the borderline of deadpan and cutesy.
@Jim Sterling

Sorry it didn't live up to your standards. Hopefully you chuckled at some point.

@wanderingpixel

"Well articulated article, Jim." "Enjoyed the podcast despite the lack of Jim."
-Actual (non-sarcastic) comments I have made

Believe it or not, I like the guy; and yes, this was a joke, though thanks for the support. Funnily enough, considering how much more harshly it's now being trashed, I think I would have avoided much more heat had I gone on pretending it was real. I guess my sense of humor isn't for everyone (or in this case, most people).
yeah, didn't read the article or comments... so if this is a joke, I bit down hard on the flame bait.
Dynamic Sheep: I was about to say some stuff, but that Brad idea is fucking amazing.

QUICK HITS REVIEWS, GOOOO!
Isn't it sad that some people have to have a joke right in front of them and explained in order to understand it? And yes, I did read Swift's "A Modest Proposal".

Also, this:

"If he wasn't an employee of Destructoid he would have probably been banned a while ago for being a flame-baiting troll."
These comments make me so sad.
Unmatched subtlety, I liked it.
Jim is a fat cockhead. God bless him.
"If he wasn't an employee of Destructoid he would have probably been banned a while ago for being a flame-baiting troll."

Except not. Considering some of the bullshit comments and personal attacks on staff that we let slide, I'm pretty mellow.
Come on guys. You guys should have figured it out by the "Hard Rain" reference.
I lol'd. Nice one. Don't worry about offending people, the people who were offended were either too thickheaded to pick up on the sarcasm or just didn't read the article. Either way, they're only making themselves look stupid.
I'm confused--are the comments supposed to meta-ironic?
"There is no place for such pornography on the internet"

BWA-HAHAHAHAHAHA.
Jim, I seriously hope your "if this a joke..." comment was somehow sarcastic in itself, as nearly every time you post a lolsarcasm article you have inevitably laid into people for not 'getting it'. You may be many things, but I didn't have you down as a hypocrite.

As for everyone who is outraged here, read the fucking blog properly.
Joke topic.
