Feel the Hatred: My goddamn internet provider's stance on copyright infringement
Anthony Burch | 10:26 AM on 09.25.2008 60 comments

You know what's really fucking fun? When I've got an interview with the associate producer of Battlefield Bad Company in the morning, but I can't make it because I can't find the meeting details in my email account which I can't access because Cox Communications decided to fucking arbitrarily put a hold on my account for illegally downloading...

...A fucking Mega Man rom. Nevermind the fact that I could very well goddamn own it, or that it's none of their goddamn business what I download so long as I keep paying for service, or that they didn't give me a moment's fucking notice before doing so so that I basically looked like a total douchebag where the BFBC guys were concerned. I wouldn't have minded a goddamn email warning me, or at least some advance warning, but I got up this morning literally incapable to access anything on the Internet. And since the connection tends to fuck up anyway, I sat around like a retard for a few minutes waiting for the connection to clear itself up until I finally called tech support and got the information I should have already gotten through a fucking phone call. And thanks for threatening to terminate my account altogether if I keep destroying the videogame industry by downloading NES roms, you fucking jackoffs.

Thanks, Cox! You're bringing us one step closer to the end of net neutrality!

Note: Emulation is wrong and I'm an immoral person, but it's none of Cox's goddamn business and they should have let me know beforehand.

wow thats pretty fucked up...I don't believe that cox has a contract that specifies what content you can and can't download so I believe some privacy issues have been violated.

"I mean you shouldn't be downloading illegal things but they shouldnt be watching what you download either. "

Again...Right from the EULA that he (or his mom) agreed to by paying the monthly bill:

"CoxCom, Inc. and its local affiliates and/or distribution partners (collectively "Cox") are pleased that you have chosen Cox® High Speed InternetSM service (the "Service"). Our goal is to provide you with an enriched, high-quality Internet experience. This Acceptable Use Policy (the "AUP") has been designed to protect our Service, our subscribers, and the Internet community, from inappropriate, illegal or otherwise objectionable activities. Please read this policy prior to accessing the Service. All users of the Service must abide by this AUP. Your violation of this AUP may result in the immediate suspension or termination of either your access to the Service and/or your Cox account. This AUP should be read in conjunction with our Internet Subscriber Agreement, Privacy Policy, and other applicable policies.

By using the Service, you agree to abide by, and require others using the Service via your account to abide by the terms of this AUP. You should consult this document regularly to ensure that your activities conform to the most recent version. IF YOU DO NOT AGREE TO BE BOUND BY THESE TERMS, YOU SHOULD IMMEDIATELY STOP THE USE OF THE SERVICES AND NOTIFY THE COX CUSTOMER SERVICE DEPARTMENT SO THAT YOUR ACCOUNT MAY BE CLOSED."

Don't like it? You have three choices:
1. Have your mom cancel Cox to stick it to the man
2. Stop downloading illegal stuff you know is illegal to do.
3. Bitch about it on the internet

Cox, Comcast, Verizon, and every other cable/telco company has packet sniffers and network monitoring tools set up and running 24/7 to weed out illegal activities. It's no different than your work monitoring your internet traffic while you are at work (which they all do also).

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?

Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
