The only thing I'd say is try and add a bit more visual flair, some variety, you know? Screenshots are always good, character ghosts, even just some lines or trim to break up the static black.
Good job though, especially since it sounds like you were working off a basic program without all the fancy bells and whistles of Photoshop and the like. Being a bit of a designer (loosely) myself, I'd like to hear your (and everyone else's) opinion of my own personal DVD cover I made for a class project.
It's darker than I would have liked, but we were going for that anyway. Plus our screenshots from Torque were incredibly dark too, so I couldn't do much. It's definitely worth investing (especially if you're a student) in Photoshop and Illustrator, if you like designing you'll go crazy with them.
