This is kind of a new test way for me of writting reviews. I spent somewhere between 30-60 minutes playing, and now I'll give a
first impressions view.
Well, costing only £10 off the PSN store, it seems so far to be of good value, and hopefully after what happened for Bad Company, any DLC will be free. Speaking of Bad Company, it's easy to recognise the Frostbite engine, which is one of my favourites. Although there are lots of explosions and great destructive environments, it didn't seem as "breakable" in some places as its predecessor.
The title screen was very promising, being aesthetically brilliant with superb music to accompany it. The tutorial, was good and bad in places. Although its worth playing for a few minutes to get a grasp of things. I had to change the controls for the planes to be inverted, otherwise it felt just impossible for me. Tanks seem all right. I very much like the air strikes that can be initiated from radars, which puts you temporarily in control of a group of bombers that come in from the map end, and move together to bomb wherever you decide to press the fire button. Adding to the havok, there are lots of air and ground turrets.
The deployment from boats is a great start on some of the maps, where the two teams kind of race against each other to get the to centre points first, although the racing sometimes occurs inter-team with people rushing to the planes. My favourite map that I played in the short time was definitely Iwo Jima, which so happens to be the island I wrote about by choice in a school project in June, so maybe I'm just drifting to it for that... hehe. Points are distributed well for the tasks, but suicides have a nasty -10, which is likely to be your option if you bail out far from land.
The weaponry on both sides is very balanced, but it's a little sad to see just 3, instead of 5 classes. As far as I can tell, there are nowhere near as many weapons as BC. There is also a sort of Squad system, but I am yet to understand that. For the Trophy Whores out there, 12 can be earned, ranging from bronze to gold. There are also additional in-game "Stamps" and "Postcards" which are more achievements, but they do not affect your PSN Trophies, (or XBL Gamerscore, as far as I know).
That about sums up this short review, as I said at the start it was a kind of test. All comments and creative criticism a very much accepted and appreciated.
I can finally fly the planes... though the cluster bombs don't often seem to do much and I find the cursor on the MG's a little high (which means you have to be basically nosediving to use them!) I guess it's more realistic... but not as much fun as having easier plane controls and a bit more opportunity to take out ground targets.
Nice first impressions review!! (and yeah, it's still a good deal for the cost!)
The only improvement I can suggest to the game is make the regular plane bombs more powerful and the sniper more powerful/less recoil.
You know what? I like this review. I agree with a lot of points you made. The boats are indeed an awesome way to start. Elsa pretty much sums everything else I have to say about the game.
@Zippy
I think making the snipers more powerful would kind of kill the game for me. Maybe that's because I hate snipers in almost every game. Now I feel kinda awesome if I kill someone as a sniper. In some games it feels just a bit cheap sometimes.
Can you explain what you mean with: "there should be classes also"? You mean more? Maybe you forgot a few words? That or I'm too Dutch to understand.
Maybe it's just because I dont have an HDTV and I cant see anybody very well, but I cant fucking kill anything. I'd be lucky to find anything at that, for such a big map you'd expect more people to shoot but I barley ever find an enemy. I even loaded the sniper class, hoping that the scope would let me murder without having to squint at my tiny little panasonic TV, and the springfield is underwhelmingly weak. I shot a guy three times in the chest and he never went down, it's ass! If I'm not in a tank, I cant do any damage. Speaking of vehicles, the controls are blah. I can only move forward and stop, I cant even go backwards in the jeep. If I ram into a wall, game over.
Also, why are capture points so easy to take? All it takes is one measly man taking a boat around to a point they want, and my team's defense crumbles. Bullshit.
As for the snipers, I guess you are kind of right. I have no trouble killing people with the sniper, I just think it should AT LEAST have less recoil and a TINY TEENY bit more damage to help.
Hm. I can understand what you mean with a small screen, shame that. Also, I think the gun you mean, for the USMC Riflemen is an M1 Garand, but I can say for sure it's not a springfield.
@Zippyduda
Snipers are already a bit over-powering when they are together in my opinion. If they were stronger some games might just become camping fests?
By the way, I play as a sniper most of the time in almost every game that provides a rifle with a scope, and I can tell you it's not always about camping, depending on wether or not your spot is any good and how close enemies are.. You're gonna want to move a lot.
Snipers ftw! hehe ^_^
Aaah good to know dude.
