Hello great peoples of the robot nation!!! Tis I, Redzie AKA Desutoid. I bring to you my latest exploits at A-kon in Dallas, Texas. A-kon, is “the oldest continually running, anime-based convention in North America”. With more than 14,000 people in attendance last year. I drove up north Dallas and met up with Dale North (lol--- went North to see Dale North) along with the
Japanator crew and the mistress blogger
Gia.
I went as the unofficial Japanator mascot,
Desutoid, an intentionally crudely made cosplay dedicated to the Destructoid official creator Niero. The new helmet I made for this convention is a lot bigger than my previous one and closer to scale with the real Desctrucoid helmet. I wasn't able to blog about the helmet as promised and complete it until I got to Dallas because my ride decided to go the night before we were supposed to leave.
At the convention, a few readers of Destructoid were present and immediately recognized me, Malice, was the first one to recognize me. A few others followed and soon also some guys from Madness Games who sold really awesome import games. Dale scored a copy of a really awesome Saturn SHMUP (with the manliest men evar!!), so expect a blog post about it in the future. Below is one of the guys from Madness games, Dac's epic “message” to customers:
We attended some panels on Friday, including the most legendary panel ever with legendary anime director,
Shinichi Watanabe AKA Nabeshin, who worked on Excel Saga, Tenchi Muyo GXP and one of my favorites, Yamato Nadeshiko Shichi Henge (Known as The Wallflower in the US). He was very energetic and friendly and there was no boring moment in his panel. We also sat through the
Bandai Visual/Entertainment panel with Rob Napton, who announced several new titles for their US release, including the heavily anticipated Gurren Lagann and newly-acquired Tamagotchi the Movie.
On Saturday, I ran into overall cool guy and Japanator troll, DarkCyder, who joined our posse and is gonna be on
Podtoid-San 60 and drove us to dinner (which is sorta tradition with Japanator which I also did in the past) on saturday night. We went to dinner with our friends from my favorite Houston anime convention,
Anime Matsuri , to this awesome restaurant near Denton called Tokyo One. Dinner was was amazing and was so much fun and the asians (which includes me) ate more than everyone. After dinner, we all went back to the hotel and just got lazy due to the awesome meal we just had except for DarkCyder, who went to the rave and Aoi went to go to the Hentai panel which I regret so much missing. A tip to co-goers, pack some aspirin (do not take with alcohol!), suck it in and party all night at least once.
On Sunday, the con wound down and I returned to my zombified state said farewell to most of my comrades in nerdom. Another fun con, which would've been fun if I was more prepared. Well there's always next year for AKON 20.
man I wish I got to hang out with everyone that went. I was there Friday evening and all day Saturday. I usually dont spend money in the dealer room, but I couldnt help pass up these awesome Stylish Lupin figures. I hope to meet up with everyone next year.
My biggest complaint:No fansubs in the video rooms. There are so many good shows from recent anime seasons that were passed up on. Its a shame.
GAH i forgot to ask,
Redzie have you been to AtsuiCon in Houston?
I picked up a flyer for it and wondered if it was any good?

This was done mostly to appease the industry that failed to show up.
@Heretic
Eff yeah!!!
@SpitFire
Im so sorry i didnt get to see your PM in time. It was cause I had to immediately leave the night before I was supposed to go. Many apologies.
AtsuiCon wasnt good last year.
@Kaijin
It was a great letdown that the industry folks didnt show up at all.
I'll probably drive up there next year, since I already live in Dallas.
