Who wants to sell me a Sega Genesis?
Jim Heine | 3:59 AM on 04.19.2009 20 comments

So listen.

I would like to become video game collector, which at the current moment is sort of impossible because I can't afford to buy too many video games with my income (I'm 17, so I have no income). Despite this, I have made some pretty decent additions to my collection as of late. For starters, My cousin Eric sold me his dreamcast for $40, and for $40, I bought a PS1 and some old Sega Genesis games from my cousin John. He would have also included an actual Genesis with those games but since his old Genesis is M.I.A I was forced to settle.

I figured since I was on the internet, I could turn to my favorite hardcore gaming community and see if they'd be willing trade me a sweet old Genesis in exchange for some greenbacks. Now, I know what you must be thinking, "LOL eBay". Well, FUCK eBay. I'd like to buy from a seller that won't subject me to the hassle of PayPal (although if that's the only option I guess *sigh* I guess I understand) and from a seller that I can trust to not send me a box full of rocks or whatever. So, do I see any potential sellers? Here's what I'm asking:

-A Sega Genesis 16-bit console in decent condition (No cracks or other obvious damages). Cables and at least one (1) controller a must.

-Name your price (keep it under $70)

-I'd perfer if you included shipping and handling in your price.

-Serious offers only (so fuck off trolls)

I saw one in a thrift shop, boxed, two controllers and with Sonic for like $12. I would keep it under $30.

Also, what Garison said.

I think I spotted one at my local Mom & Pop video game store. If I feel generous enough, I'll actually buy it for you. :3

Your 17. The type of job you can do will hire. The "Times are Tough" shit really only applies to people with actual careers that make more than minimum wage.

Retail stores, supermarkets, fast food, and manual labor jobs always need people.

@Sick and Garrison

Obviously neither of you have tried to get a job in today's economy, its hard even for people with college degrees, you think they're gonna hire a high school kid?

Not to mention that even the jobs he could be hired for are highly competitive because of the economy and everyone needing a job so even a position flipping burgers is sought out for.

So both of you can shut the fuck up, don't be so goddamn ignorant.

Try goodwill! They often have some retro systems for good prices. Also, if you have an independent game shop nearby, I bet that you can find one there for a reasonable price, and even strike up a friendship with the owner (helpful for future purchases).
Also, don't be mean Kyousuke. It's tough to get a job, but its not an impossibility. If you keep an eye out for a job thats open to a 17-year old, you'll find that companies are more than willing to hire them. They'll often settle for much less pay than a college graduate. I do see the angle you're coming from though, and it certainly is valid, but theres no reason to be so harsh about it.

WTF is wrong with paypal? It takes literally 5 minutes to set up and is the furthest thing from being a hassle. On top of that Ebay isn't the place it used to be when it first opened, the fear of getting a box of rocks is just stupid unless you buy from a new seller with zero feedback who uses a stock photo for the auction.

When your town is a blackballed piece of shit, it is quite hard to find part-time work. I feel your pain.

I'm looking right now at a Sega Genesis in my local salvation army. It includes all of the neccesary cables, a controller and a copy of Barney' Hide and Seek. Its sticker price says $3.50, today is half price day.

I'm sorry. There is no way I'd give this up.

So, like, don't read the entire blog post or anything. What ever you do, don't do that.
