A top 10 list of any kind can be so subjective. One person's experience playing a game will not be exactly the same as somebody else's. Having said that, I still think GameTrailers has put together a nice compilation of what they consider to be the top 10 most difficult games.
And in my humble opinion, picking F-Zero GX, for the GameCube, was just one of the many excellent choices on their list. Obviously no list would be complete without Ninja Gaiden. And I like how they just picked the entire series.
Another entire series makes this list that I absolutely agree with...but l don't want to spill the beans and spoil it for you. I'll let the video speak for itself. Oh, and I never beat the last game. How 'bout you?
Where the hell was Asteroids, Defender, and Berzerk?
I have beaten Zelda 2, Ninja Gaien 1 and Ikaruga all without using a continue. I haven't done each of them without losing a life, however. And I've beaten the rest of the Ninja Gaiden series, just not in one continue. Never really got in to Contra. The first time I played it (not that long ago actually) I managed to get to the second third-person-over-the-shoulder section with no continues, but this is after beating the shit out of Contra 4 so it was pretty easy to get the hang of.
I would have to say that the G&G series is definately harder than Battletoads by a wide margin. Battletoads is annoying. G&G is just brutal.
I personally think this is one of the best top 10 lists they have ever made. The only change I would make is to figure out a way to getN+ on the list some where. Maybe make it a top 11.
Battletoads drove me nuts. I could get about half way through and I swear my finger were in pain at that point. There's difficult and there's sheer unforgiving.
In all honesty, I don't know if Contra ranks up there with the rest of these games/series. Maybe I've just played it and Super C so many god damned times, but I don't find it nearly as hard as some other stuff.
How about Total Carnage? It was a Smash TV clone for SNES where you shoot mutated dudes and try to take down General Akhboob. I only beat it because I had every possible Game Genie code turned on.

Out of curiosity, what is broken in the NES TMNT game that is preventing it from being on this list? I'd definitely put it on here, mainly because that fucking electric seaweed/bomb defusing level is the bane of my existence.
It wasn't a clone, it was a sequel! Also as for the turtles, there is an area of the third world where you have to make a little jump that is next to impossible to make. The angry video game nerd has a video about that jump as well as the level 2 underwater sequence, which is also notorious.

I couldn't help but laugh out loud at that last response. Good one.
I've never beaten Super Ghouls and Ghosts that second time.
After you beat it the first time and it sends you back to the first level, I usually swear at the TV for about 5 minutes and shut it off.
Ah, yeah. I know exactly what you mean about that jump. A little two-inch gap ends up taking 45 minutes to clear because of the stupid jump mechanics and the roof you keep bumping into. That sucked.
I thought of another one: Gauntlet. I missed out on the original and only played the XBLA version, but it is a fucking bitch and a half.

I assume they're not there because they're arcade games, which were made hard in order to take your money. I know Ikaruga is on the list, but at least you could beat that game. :)

If you say so.
It was all about me...not you.

That game is complete garbage, especially the hoverbike levels... but I love it so much

And I'm in agreement with the Egg Man on Battletoads. Damn hard.

Games like that make Battletoads look like Barbie's Horse Adventure.
That's absolutely insane.
