MGS4 2006 vs MGS4 2008

In the video below, IGN shows us how the MGS4 E3 2006 trailer matches up to the MGS4 final build trailer. And in my humble opinion, the final build trailer is the hands down winner.

I know it's sounds like an easy choice. I'm simply picking the "latest and greatest" version. But if Killzone 2 is brought into the conversation...well, I think I you know where I'm going with that topic.

What do the rest of you folks think?

I think I like the E3 '06 trailer. I like the yellow-ish colors in it compared to the brown/gray of the final build. The '06 trailer has that sort of stylish daylight look to it whereas the final build looks more light real daylight.

It'd be interesting to play the game with the old style.

@G-C-S...Hmmm...well to each their own. I did feel that the yellow tinted '06 trailer looked stylish. But I just felt there was more detail and polish in the final build trailer.

It seems to be a strictly colour pallet only difference. Except for the later one being more detailed of course, they had more time on that one.

I do think the yellowish one is good, but it may not be very effective when playing the game.

@brainderailment...I couldn't agree with you more. I still wonder what Hideo Kojima was referring to when he expressed his dissatisfaction with the final game? He cited the game's graphics and his inability to realize his early vision. I can only wonder if his "early vision" predated the E3 2006 trailer?

i agree with reclusivespirit. but i think it has to be before the e3 trailer. because this one and the e3 trailer are practicly identical in graphics

If you study the 06 trailer. A lot of the tint compositing and some of the wash-outs are in place to compensate for the lack of detail in several shots. You can also see character models are blocking some background settings to also hide the early state of the game.

Seriously, I'm not saying the game looks bad, but the lack of color really is just bugging me. Why the hell are all games brown now? Like developers must know that people are calling out games looks for this. Now adays I'll just give major kudos to a game if it has the color red or blue in it, shit.

@covah

I'm with you on that. Color definitely needs to make a comeback.

Also, I've seen a lot of people complain about Gears of War being completely gray, but praise MGS4 for its amazing graphics. I don't get it.

Covah: Notice how the graveyard shifts from a sad grey to a more welcoming yellow? Expect a lot of shifts like this in the game.

It wouldn't really fit the mood if the graveyard had Lego bricks

I think the lighting is better in many regards in the 06 version though the tint really doesn't help a lot. The big benefit in the 06 one is that the lighting in the desert scenes looks a lot better. The 08 one may have better textures but light and shadow look a lot less pronounced in that desert sun.

The textures are definitely a lot better now though.
