A hacker out of Germany called StreetskaterFU figured out a way to play games directly from the PS3's HDD, without the need of the actual blu-ray disc the game is on. And he dropped this little nugget off at the PS3Hax Network about 3 days ago.
There's also a sketchy YouTube of it, which I'm posting in here. And according to StreetskaterFU the video shows:
- Warhawk running from HDD
- no PKG version
- no WH disc while WH is running
- Motorstorm running as proxy disc
- legal way
This is definitely within the realm of possibilities for the PS3. With the ability to have Linux running on your PS3, it is generously gifting hacker's with a way inside to generate "back-up" copies...or even discs, of the games.
I'm all about ease of use when I'm playing games. And loading games directly from your HDD sounds like the way to go for me. Especially if you're fortunate enough to be able to install as large a HDD as you can possibly afford. Although I still have the original HDD on my PS3.
I don't support the pirating of games. It's just not my thing. It would be unfortunate if some hackers possibly ruin this HDD install for us PS3 owners. Perhaps it will be history by the next firmware update?
You may want to watch this with the sound turned off. There's an annoying clicking sound in the video that sounds like someone typing on a keyboard. Apparently it was the camera's auto focus as it was filming. Very irritating.
interesting. it's possible that it's legit. hard to tell for sure. apparently there was some exploit in 2.10 that let unsigned code run. if this is real it's cool but i'm guessing it wont be practical since it would be patched quickly in a subsequent firmware update. it will probably happen practically, eventually; but using a mod chip.
if it ever does, i expect games to start coming w/ a bunch of extra garbage data scattered throughout the game code to artificially inflate the disc size. I know it's practically like that in a lot of games atm, but that's more of data being cloned at different areas of the disc to compensate for BD's slow seek times.
Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
I think the camera was on it's own.
He has the download version of Warhawk.
Next thing he'll post is him playing Siren and Bionic Commando from the HDD...*gasp*!
I'm sure it could be done but then we would get weekly firmware updates like the PSP due to piracy concerns.
And "legal way?" Hmm...

It seems this is the same kid from TEAM ICE that made the fake ISO loaders and what not.
If it is, great break through... though I dont seeing it last long with all the F/W updates sony rolls out.
