I'm delighted that you're choosing to update the heavy, arguably the fan-favorite of TF2, I've heard alot of rumors about 'Iron Knuckles', and 'Random item drops', both of which, I'm looking foward to (please don't disappoint!).
I'm a huge fan of your game, and all of valve's games, I like to think the fact I bought the orange box twice is a testimony to that. (PC/360 versions, if you're wondering.)
However I am saddened with your lack of 360 support with your updates, I do hope you and Microsoft figure something out soon, I understand that there's complications, but I'm finding the 360 version is becoming a little repetitive, and almost boring due to lack of variety, which really is the core of your game which I'm sure you already know.
Anyway, onto your heavy update, I'm really hoping you do something inventive with our beloved Russian gaint, but try and keep the feel, I have my own suggestion which I do hope you'll take into consideration, and I know I'm not the only one hoping for this kind of weapon.
What I'd really like to see is some kind of slow-charging cannon, I really feel like it'd keep with the heavy's explosive power, but continue to keep him tactical, maybe even more so.
The cannon would be a single-shot, explosive round, with reasonable splash damage, and a long cool-down time, making the canon have a long cool-down is essential to keep the heavy's weaknesses in check, while still offering the heavy alternatives, say you had to keep switching weapons to see if you could use your cannon again after clearing a sentry, you'd have to fall back on your side arm, making the heavy alot more vulnerable after firing a fully charged shot, but at the same time making the decision to actually use the cannon alot tougher.
It should be an explosive shot so that the heavy's wide spread of fire isn't completely lost, and he doesn't have to be completely accurate, so that, while it changes how you play, it doesn't change the class completely, and it'd really give the player a choice on what kind of heavy he wants to play as, this new weapon would likely be alot harder to defend with, but excelent for quick assaults on sentries or defenders.
The shot should be short to medium range, as to stop abuse, we don't want the heavy being able to take out sentrys from across the map, but we still want him to strike fear when you run into one as you run down a corridor.
I don't exactly have the idea completely mapped out in my head.. the charging is fuzzy, maybe the charge increases power the longer it's held, rather than distance, it should be held and not charged over time, the longer you hold down, the stronger the shot is, and the longer the cool down?
I don't know, it's just an idea, I really think it suits the heavy, hope to hear opinions. I hope my idea was coherent, and somewhat-well written, it's nearly 4am, so I apologize for typing errors, etc.
As someone who owns Orange Box on 360 and TF2 on PC I feel your pain. I too wish valve would pull their heads out of their asses and support their consoles products to the extent that they support their PC products.
As for your idea, I'm not crazy about it. I totally see where you are going. It would allow the heavy to be a little more versatile when there is no medic around. It would allow him to take out a lvl 3 sentry by himself, which would be useful. However, I fear that it wouldn't be much fun to play, especially if it replaced the chaingun.
I would much rather see an update to the heavy's secondary weapon. Honestly, how often do you have that shotgun out while you still have chaingun ammo left? I'd like to see something in that weapon slot that I'll use in lieu of the chaingun, depending on the situation I was in.
I was just thinking more about your idea. I think the weapon should be made to be super powerful against sentrys and other structures but slightly less powerful than a demo's sticky grenade when used against other players. This would allow for a less lengthy cool down time.
My main concern with the cool down time is it takes away from one of the best abilities a heavy has and that is to lay down suppressive fire. If he could fire these explosive shells every 3-5 seconds he would still be able to keep enemies behind cover. If he had to wait 10 seconds or more (which is what I'm imagining you had planned) then his abilities are severely gimped.
Anyways, I'm probably digging too much into this. I'll leave it alone now.
Ok I see what you mean. Firing weak shots with a quick cool down would allow for adequate suppressive fire and could make for some fun mind games too. Your oppenents, upon hearing your shelling stop, won't know if you're charging up a massive shot or if you've simply moved on. I like it.
Valve will maybe someday throw some of these changes to the console players, but at this point if you haven't realized that Valve's intended target is the PC gamer then you are just shit out of luck.
hmmm, some kind of charged-shot, explosive device.... like say, a grenade of some sort? you know what would really be awesome, if he also had a grenade that kind of stuck to stuff, and then could be triggered with the alternate fire button. you know, just an idea.
Thats cool idea. I was thinking more a of a cannon type weapon myself but with a high fire rate, low clip size with a small amount of splash damage. Gives the heavy a little more use against sentrys.
I really think Valve needs to get some kind of update to the xbox360 and ps3 versions so the players on those systems dont feel left out, and unloved.
This is a response to your entirely unnecessary and spiteful comment on one of my posts...
