So I had contemplated posting a blog asking about the likelihood of a Watchmen videogame that would undoubtedly coincide with the upcoming release of the film, when it struck me that I better google it first, lest I be smacked by numerous, "Google is your friend" replies. Alas, I stumbled upon the following story over at
MTV.com.
Now, my question becomes, what is to be expected of the title? Personally, I've never heard of the developer (Deadline Games) and I'm not familiar with the two titles referenced in the story (Chili Con Carnage and Total Overdose). What I am familiar with is the tremendous awesomeness of Watchmen, which I'm currently about 3/4ths of the way through. It's my first read-through and I have to say it is simply fantastic. I hope that neither the game nor the film will be disappointing. Judging by the trailer, the latter looks very promising.
My expectations for the game are very low.
OH SNAP!
One of the Main themes of Watchmen was the fact that none of the characters had super powers (except doc. Manhattan). I don't think a game starring them would be all that fun or interesting. This is one game that I will definitely not be picking up =\
Batman doesn't have any super powers, and he did alright.
@char: I can't get enough of it. I have to force myself to put it down after I spend like an hour or two at a time with it. I agree about the parallel plots/locales/themes in adjacent panels. I have no idea how they are going to try and deal with that in the film (i.e., the pirate comics?). I'm also not sure what kind of approach they are going to take with the chronology, as the narrative hops from decade to decade through clever, literary techniques that seem like they will be impossible (or at least difficult) to replicate on film.
Now I loved TO, it was cheesy, ridiculous, over-the-top action. It was at the same time one of the best and worst games I have ever played. But, most importantly, it was fun as shit. Get it, it's cheap as hell.
Now reread that paragraph, replacing Total Overdose with Watchmen. Does that sound like Watchmen to you?
But, Deadline Games is also making Faith and a .45, which, last I heard, is supposed to be awesome. It's less over-the-top than TO and more realistic (not realistic, but you know what I mean). If Deadline can stay away from the goofiness that they do oh so well, there is hope for Watchmen, and Faith and a .45 for that matter.
Keep your eye on this one, this game could go either way.
Also I read through the graphic novel about a month ago, it is very good. Very well written and thought out with compelling characters. Rorschach is a straight G.
From what I've read, they're leaving the entire Pirate comic out of the theatrical release. I also heard that later down the line they are going to release it on DVD (with the main character being played by the guy who did Leonidas in 300).
There are also murmurs that they rewrote the ending so that it had a more contemporary ending. Fuck people who think such things are a good idea...
