NXE Game Install Feature (List Heavy)
RHWeeeee6 | 10:12 AM on 11.17.2008 31 comments

With the upcoming release of the NXE, and all the coverage it’s getting from DTOID and other sites (Red vs. Blue of all places) I thought it would be a good idea to find some more info about it on my own. So last night I receive a link to a site called Cheapassgamer.com. It is a link to its forum and a thread about the NXE. This thread however is not about the NXE as a whole, but about the new feature to be able to install games. My overall opinion on this feature, is that it will be very useful for prolonging the life of you XBOX 360, the less time the DVD drive runs, the less chance it will crap out on you, and the less heat it will generate, so less chances of RROD.

The users posted on this thread how much space was required to install games.

Now, from this list (and others along the forum posts) I can venture a guess to say that the majority of games will not be larger than say 7 gigs to install on your HDD. The only games that go above that are Lost Odyssey (23.3G), Blue Dragon (19.9G), and Infinite Undiscovery (12.5G). You can however install each disc separately with no problem it seems (as one user states a couple of pages into the thread) I don’t see a problem with this, but what is a little bit strange to me, is that some titles are not supported. All 3 Burger King Games are not supported (who cares?), but also Crackdown and DOA Extreme Beach Volleyball 2 are not supported. I’m not really surprised that the burger king games are not supported, but Crackdown is a surprise seeing as it is a pretty main stream game that I’m sure a lot of people do own, quite strange. As of my posting this blog, I have not seen anymore note worthy exceptions to the games we will be able to install when the NXE comes out.

EDIT: Here is a list provided by BlindSideDork, that shows what improvements the install feature actually gives the games.

Who cares about the Burger King games? I care about the Burger King games. But other than them, I'm sure I'll take advantage of this for the smaller games, since space is always at a premium on my hard drive.
BlindsideDork's Destructoid Blog
Yeah, I saw this last week and was so utterly unimpressed and disgusted. Most of the installs only really do a barely 10 second quickness to a loading time.

Only problem with that...usually the loading times were 50 seconds which means it is not a significant decrease in loading and virtually unnoticeable. Talk about a waste.
Char Aznable's Destructoid Blog
Really, Blue Dragon? 19.9 gigs? Really?

I can't even fit that onto my lame 20 gig HD, because it's magically reduced to 12 gigs before even touching it.
RHWeeeee6's Destructoid Blog
I knew Necros would say something about the Burger King Games. Also, if you were a little bit more selective on your DLC Necros maybe you wouldn't have that problem.
BlindsideDork's Destructoid Blog
Also, here is a better list, it actually shows how some of the games are "improved."
RHWeeeee6's Destructoid Blog
Thanks BSD Ill add it to the post.
Char Aznable's Destructoid Blog
Looking at that new link from BSD, doing this hardly seems worth it. Maybe installs would be useful with something like Oblivion or Fallout, where you load every time you enter/exit a building. Otherwise, meh, I can wait the extra 10 seconds.
NihonTiger90's Destructoid Blog
This seems like a bit of a waste, especially, since most people still have the 20GB hard drive.
brainderailment's Destructoid Blog
Goddamnit! My burger king games aren't supported.
Daxelman's Destructoid Blog
It's optional right?
BlindsideDork's Destructoid Blog
100% optional.
Kryptinite's Destructoid Blog
The best thing about the Installs is that the 360 is now QUIET AS SHIT! I plan on installing all the games I'm playing. Hell, I even installed Lost for shits and giggles.
king3vbo's Destructoid Blog
I won't be doing it, since I only have a 20GB HD and I can wait an extra 5-10 seconds
seltzermx's Destructoid Blog
If you think about it though, those effect add up over time. If I can save say 15 seconds per load in Gears of War 2, and if I were one of those people that would go for the "1999" achievement where you play 1,999 games, that adds up to over 8 hours total saved. And thats just one game. Heck I'm sure I woulda shaved off 10-20 hours off my Lost Odyssey play-through had I had the game installed. Its all a matter of the long-run.
Timmeh's Destructoid Blog
It may extend the life of your DVD drive but I can guarantee you your HDD isn't going to thank you.

I foresee lots of dead MS HDDs in the near future.

@ Seltzermx

I've been playing through Lost Odyssey and I haven't had any problems with load times. They've all seemed really quick to me.
Guagloves's Destructoid Blog
The only reason I want a new hard drive is that so my xbox doesn't sound like a vacuum cleaner anymore.
zombiekiller13's Destructoid Blog
I'm picking up a 120GB HDD soon, seeing as though I can really only install 1 game at a time on my 20/12GB.

I installed Bully, since I'm finally getting into the 360 version. Found that the load times are cut slightly, and it's not as choppy as it normally is.

But I was really wanting this to stop the loud disc drive. Definitely throwing RB2 on once I get a larger drive.
BlindsideDork's Destructoid Blog
I should get a new HDD, but I don't want to spend so much on so little.
giraffywaffy's Destructoid Blog
Does anyone have any clue how long these install times will take?
ChronosWing's Destructoid Blog
Bah, get back to me when MS starts selling empty HD shells that I can put my own 2.5 HD in.
The Bez's Destructoid Blog
Is there an easy way to transfer my data from my 20 gig hdd if I buy a 120 gig hdd?
giraffywaffy's Destructoid Blog
@The Bez:
There is a transfer cable available on microsoft's website for free.
Kryptinite's Destructoid Blog
@the Bez

If you buy a new 120GB HD like I did, you get a disc and transfer cable that does all that for you. It took about an hour to transfer everything.
Necros's Destructoid Blog
Regardless of load times (which, I think, any little bit helps), keeping the damn DVD drive silent is a big enough boon that I will do this with whatever game I am currently playing.

Also, I don't think you need to keep all every disc of a multi-disc game installed at the same time, people.
the GAMEGOBLIN's Destructoid Blog
I was so pissed that Earth Defense Force 2017 isn't helped at all by installation. The loading times really bothered me (considering missions end fairly quickly) and I was looking forward to playing it on the hard drive.

Bummer :(
hood_954's Destructoid Blog
is this the only thing installing does? slightly improve loading times and decreasing chances of offline lag? cause if so, i honestly don't think it's worth it. Also, i'd rather have the console RRoD than the HDD overheating and causing all my data to get lost
ArrestedDeveloper's Destructoid Blog
This is going to accelerate my time table for upgrading the hard drive. I've been sitting with a 7 gig or so buffer but with 1 game and a demo that will be chewed up.
falinter's Destructoid Blog
Finally I can install my beloved Bomberman: Act Zero.
I Predict A Ryan's Destructoid Blog
Makes me glad I have a 120GB elite! :D
I still have like 95GB that needs using.
