NXE Game Install Feature (List Heavy)

With the upcoming release of the NXE, and all the coverage its getting from DTOID and other sites (Red vs. Blue of all places) I thought it would be a good idea to find some more info about it on my own. So last night I receive a link to a site called Cheapassgamer.com. It is a link to its forum and a thread about the NXE. This thread however is not about the NXE as a whole, but about the new feature to be able to install games. My overall opinion on this feature, is that it will be very useful for prolonging the life of you XBOX 360, the less time the DVD drive runs, the less chance it will crap out on you, and the less heat it will generate, so less chances of RROD.

The users posted on this thread how much space was required to install games.

Now, from this list (and others along the forum posts) I can venture a guess to say that the majority of games will not be larger than say 7 gigs to install on your HDD. The only games that go above that are Lost Odyssey (23.3G), Blue Dragon (19.9G), and Infinite Undiscovery (12.5G). You can however install each disc separately with no problem it seems (as one user states a couple of pages into the thread) I dont see a problem with this, but what is a little bit strange to me, is that some titles are not supported. All 3 Burger King Games are not supported (who cares?), but also Crackdown and DOA Extreme Beach Volleyball 2 are not supported. Im not really surprised that the burger king games are not supported, but Crackdown is a surprise seeing as it is a pretty main stream game that Im sure a lot of people do own, quite strange. As of my posting this blog, I have not seen anymore note worthy exceptions to the games we will be able to install when the NXE comes out.

EDIT: Here is a list provided by BlindSideDork, that shows what improvements the install feature actually gives the games.   read

CERN fired the black hole machine today.

I'm sure you have all heard of the Large Hadron Collider, and some of you may recall this picture circulating around.

If you dont then read up on it here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Large_Hadron_Collider and here http://www.boston.com/bigpicture/2008/08/the_large_hadron_collider.html and this video explains it layman's terms http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_6uKZWnJLCM

Essentially, its a 27Km (17 mile) circumference particle accelerator. The experiments that physicists will be able to do with this will be vast, and could change our knowledge of how the universe works. They're even planning on making some (micro) black holes! Insane, no?
The whole area is cooled to 1.9K (1.9C above absolute zero - the temperature where even electrons stop moving - essentially nothing can exist below that temperature, or something like that). Or in a way that is easier to comprehend, -271.25 C (-456.25 F). All this, and it only cost $6billion. Pretty cheap for something that has the potential to destroy the world don't you agree?

Anyway the first official firing of this thing was today, its been fired. And nothing happened!

The fireworks start on October 21st, when there's actually a collision. Today was the first full test, getting the beam going around the LHC in both directions, but no collisions. The BBC have quite a lot on it, too.

For those worried that its going to kill us all, keep checking this website:

A Cast of Thousands: Dominic Santiago

Dominic "Dom" Santiago, Marcus Fenix's friend and fellow CoG soldier is of my favorite characters in recent years. Dom has saved Marcus on two occasions that we know of, once saving him from the death penalty after testifying in his trial, and again at the very beginning of Gears 1 rescuing him from Jacinto Maximum Security Prison which has been overtaken by the Locust Horde, and accompanies Marcus through all of Gears 1 as a major asset to complete their Light Mass Bomb deployment mission. But Dom is not just a supporting character, Dom's story is deep enough to make him a main character.

Though humanities plight against the Locust Horde is global struggle for all humans on Sera, the war with the Locust Horde has a more personal meaning for Dom due to the disappearance of his wife Maria on Emergence Day. The struggle to find his wife while fulfilling his duty as a Gear has Dom doing things most Gears wouldn't, like associating with Stranded in order to find information on Maria's whereabouts. Dom's search, however bleak it may seem, keeps him going and his refusal to give up, shines a small ray of optimism and hope in this story of a war torn world.

A note worthy point is Dom's status within the CoG army. Though he has served for years during the Pendulum Wars, including the Aspho Fields Battle (as mentioned by Carmine) and the ongoing Locust-Human War, Dom still has a rank of Private. This could be due to his testifying in favor of Marcus during his desertion trial, which could have possibly earned him mistrust among the Gears due to Marcus' reputation.

Another thing about Dom that is something I have thought about and talked about with others, is the fact that humanity was basically at a stand still with the Locust Horde, that is until Marcus Fenix is broken out of prison, by Dom, and leads Delta Squad against seemingly never ending Locust and insurmountable odds to deploy the Light Mass Bomb, a Major victory against the Locust. If Marcus is a major factor in the human victory against the Locust in the Gears of War story, then by association (and the fact that he is part of Delta Squad) Dom is also responsible for saving humanity from the Locust Horde.

Dom at first seems like a simple character, just another soldier who is friends with protagonist Marcus Fenix, but as you get to know him and his story, Dom becomes a more complex character who's story and past rivals that of Marcus' (desertion, his father and such). With his Maria tattoo proudly displayed on his right arm and his lancer in hand Dom continued the fight against the Locust and the search for his missing wife, and I hope his story ends well and does not end early.

Red v.s. Blue: Recon Chapter 7 Recap. Is Washigton Crazy? (Spoilers)

Another week, another RvB Recon Episode.

In store news a GrifBall shirt is now available, and you can start pre-ordering a "We are pleased"quote shirt from the Supreme Surrender mini-series.

RvB: Recon Chapter 6 The Recap:

The Chairman reads out a message to the Director of Project Freelancer. In this message we learn that Project Freelancer "was only granted the use of a single artificial intelligence unit for implantation experiments". Church and Caboose talk to Washington trying to calm him down after he has shot South, since Church thinks Washington is not of a sane mind. Washington tries to explain to Church that his actions were not out of crazed thoughts but out of sane judgment aided by Delta's suggestion. "Im totally, completely sane.... Now if you will excuse me I need to go blow up this dead body."

Church talks to Delta about Washington's state of mind, Delta states that "destruction of unused armor or equipment is standard recovery procedure." Delta adds the name of Washington's AI Epsilon "Epsilon was an unstable intelligence unit that had to be deleted, its integration with Washington's mind concerned our superiors. I believe that agent Washington's sanity is well within acceptable deviations... for now." All the while behind Church Washington has been stacking explosives on South's body and blows them up just as Delta finishes his statement.

Washington rejoins the group and after calling command "they wanted me to pass on condolences on Souths passing." to Delta. Church asks what Washington told them to which he replies "I told them Caboose did it. Apparently they have a shortcut on their keyboard for reporting his team kills." Caboose then states the shortcut to be "CTRL F U" Washington tells Church that "I would have told them you shot her, but I wanted it to be believable." to which Church replies that "Hey! My aim is fine." A small argument ensues about how the Meta managed to dodge Church's rocket. Caboose reveals to Washington that Wyoming's head was one the ship with Tex, Washington is perplexed to which Church replies "His helmet.... Tex took it for some reason."

The Meta has taken one of the teams Mongooses, the team discusses what to do, then Church asks "Why does it want these AIs anyway?" Washington replies "If you can get your hands on a Smart AI you can be damn near unstoppable." Delta then goes on to state "There is One, smart AI in the Freelancer Program, the Alpha" Washington stops Delta and after Church asks about it Washington explains "Its nothing its a myth." Then Delta interjects with something that Washington is sensitive about and Washington instructs Delta to shut down. Washington continues to explain to Church "Im tired of hearing about this Alpha, its all they talk about. Rumor has it the program only got one AI, so they copied it. The original was Alpha, then Beta, and so on.... Some took drastic steps to see the Alpha, learn where it was." Washington's recovery beacon goes off for an agent Mayne. The operator tells Washington to confirm, he does "Yeah its him, its the Meta." Church is in shock "WHAT?! The Meta is a freelancer?" Washington cannot get the coordinates from Command due to something jamming the transmission. Delta did not get the coordinates but he did get data that states "that the Meta is experiencing massive power fluctuations." Church deduces that it probably has too much equipment running on one suit, Delta agrees. "The Meta is probably dangerously low on power." Washington asks where it may be going, Church and Caboose know of one place, the map Last Resort is shown and the Meta is there.

END

This weeks episode had more background comedy in it, and was more a look at Washington and how he is viewed by Church. More story elements are put into place and a possible second confrontation with the Meta is set up. There is still no sing of Tucker or of Red tea, hopefully they will show up soon. This episode gets 8 elite skulls out of 10

Red v.s. Blue: Recon Chapter 5 & 6. No recap for 5.... Washington is one Cold Mother Fucker. (Spoilers)

Before I start just want to inform you (though ill be posting it up tomorrow night) that I will be hosting two Friday Night Fights tommorow. Gears of War, starting at 8PM, and Team Fortress 2, starting at 10PM. Now onto business

Yeah I know Im late, well life got in the way. Now lets go straight to the recap for episode 6. I am not recapping episode 5 cause well.. its a week late...

RvB: Recon Chapter 6 The Recap:

The Director once again starts off this episode, comparing the Chairman and his organization to the Meta. Which we now realize is the white armored soldier that has been stalking Washington and the group. As the Director's message ends, South is behind a Bubble Sheild while the Meta is attacking her with a Brute Shot. She is in danger, the shield wont last too long and the probability of her winning against the Meta is very slim according to Delta. So she does what she can to survive and is willing to sacrifice Delta to the Meta to achieve this goal. Just as her shield goes down Washington, Church and Caboose come to the rescue. Washington instructs Church and Caboose to not let the Meta near South or to let South escape. Church promptly tells Caboose to "help her." Caboose shoots South, incapacitating her.The team fights the Meta as well as they can, then Washington informs them that the Meta has gone invisible. Church ask for an explanation to which Washington reveals that the Meta can absorb the equipment of other freelancers. Church freaks out as he realizes why the Meta is in white armor, it has Wyoming's time ability, which the Meta promptly uses to escape the rocket launcher Church points at it. The Meta calmly walks over to Washington and prepares to execute him while the group is frozen, but backs off when something in its suit sparks with damage. The group goes over to South, Delta suggest that they move him to a new host, Caboose volunteers. After Delta is moved, he agrees with Church and speculates that the Meta has acquired the AI Gamma and Wyoming's equipment, Delta points out that they can probably destroy the Meta if they find where ever it may be going to repair itself. South stands up, she is badly injured and cannot walk on her own, Washington tells her to crawl, Delta however reveals to Washington what South had tried to do to escape the Meta, he also reveals that South was the one that betrayed her brother North back in Recovery One in order to escape from the Meta. Delta suggest to Washington that they "do not allow her to hamper our progress." Washington draws his gun and kills South before she can finish he question "What are you gonna do Sh..." She falls dead, Washington sighs and Church says "Dude, you guys are some cold motherfuckers."

END

Episode 5 uses a lot more use of in game mechanics used as special effects which goes back to the original series. Episode 5 just progresses the story. Just watch it I'm too lazy to tell you more about it.

As for episode 6 again just a lot of story progression. Caboose makes teh funny a few times, they freeze time, and there is combat. Both episodes get 10 elite skulls out of 10

Red v.s. Blue: Recon Chapter 4 Recap, Church has Returned. (Spoilers)

New this week at Rooster Teeth, besides episode 4 of Red vs Blue, is a new mini-series Supreme Surrender using the Epic RTS Supreme Commander. Anyway, lets get into the recap.

RvB: Recon Chapter 4 The Recap:

The Director reads his newest message to the Chairman, telling him that they the freelancers have the situation under control, and that his recovery agent (Washington) is already closing in on it. The Director expects that this matter will be taken care of shortly and that he will be able to return to his research without further interruption from the Chairman.

Washington and Caboose arrive at a blue base, where one of the original blue team is stationed. Caboose mentions that when they got their new orders "He tried to hide his from me" to which Washington replies "Really? I cant imagine why." Caboose reveals to Washington that the soldier they are about to encounter "knows the most. He know all about your AI game, He dated Tex." Washington is a bit confused as to how someone could actually date Tex, but this train of thought is interrupted by a sniper shot hitting the ground between Caboose and Washington. Washington retreats behind the nearest rock, while a familiar voice says that "That was your warning shot. The next one is going right between your eyes." Caboose does not follow Washington and instead stand there is one more sniper shots completely miss him, Caboose recognizes Church's voice. Church continues to try and shoot Caboose and misses him completely. Washington, from behind a rock, questions Caboose about Church and why he is shooting at Caboose. Caboose explains that it is a game they play, where Church "Pretends he doesn't like me."

The shooting stops and Church, from atop the base tells Caboose to leave. Caboose brings Washington up to Church, to which Church says "You brought a Freelancer here? Whats wrong with you?" Washington demands that Church open the gate, Church refuses till Washington points out he could just walk through the gaping hole to their right. Church grudgingly agree to open the gate. It turns out Church has been stationed there, alone, for over a year, of which Church says "Its been ummm... great, really great." Command radios Washington and he informs them that he has found "blue team members that have extensive experience with Omega." Church doesn't not like the sound of this, Command then tells Washington to head to Outpost 17B. While this is happening Caboose looks up and we are given a few seconds of someone camouflaged perched atop the team spying on them.

Washington begins to move out, but Church refuses to which Caboose also refuses. Church then goes off on caboose about why he did not upgrade Mark VI armor and still has his Mark V armor. The argue about it, to which Washington goes "How do you ever get anything done if all you ever do is argue with each other?" Church replies "We don't. That's part of our charm, quit fuckign it up." Washington pleads with Church and Caboose to help him, Church however says that "If its killing freelancers I want to start a fan club for it." Washington reveals to them that they found Tex's ship, Church's tone changes and he agrees to go with Washington.

As the three star to leave the area, the camouflaged soldier is revealed to be the same Soldier in white armor that we saw after the credits of episode 3. He scrambles the conversation between Washington and Command and sends it to Sarge, the new message saying "This Command calling Red Base... Agent Washington has reassembled the blues... Gather your team we want you stop Agent Washington at all costs..." End....

After the Credits, just like in the last episode, one more thing is revealed. The soldier in white sees someone sneaking around the base. Turns out to be none other than South who has been following Agent Washing all this time. The episode truly ends with the Soldier in White going up to South presumably for a confrontation.

Another great episode, Church returns and that alone for me gives it a 10 out of 10, but the episode is actually quite funny. Aside from that, the visual trick used for the message scrambling scene is well done and one would never think you cant Actually do that in Halo 3. Overall this episode gets 10 elite skulls out of 10

Red v.s. Blue: Recon Chapter 3 Recap Caboose is BACK! (Spoilers)

Another Tuesday, another RvB: Recon episode. On a side note, I have decided that I will be doing this every Tuesday as long as there is a new RvB episode out on Monday. The blog will contain the recap and my opinion on the episode.

RvB: Recon Chapter 3 The Recap: A narrator relates a message to the man known only as the Director. The message states that they will be interviewing members of the Directors staff since he is apparently always s busy. The message then mentions outpost 17B and something called Meta, and then asks about what Meta is and what the Directors plans are with it. Washington arrives at Blue Outpost 28: “Rats Nest” and meets Lt. Miller. Washington is there to take one of Miller’s soldiers for a “secret mission”, Miller is not too happy about this since he says he has “Reds coming out my ass here.” Washington then states that Miller should worry more about getting his vehicles back to working order and stop worrying about troop assignment. Miller argues that it is commands fault for sending them a guy who “… said he was good with vehicles. But all he does is talk to em…” Washington gets a bit annoyed and tells Miller “I need Pvt. Caboose and I need him Now.” To this Miller’s attitude completely changes and he becomes extremely cooperative with Washington. Miller gives the duty of fetching Caboose to the British Pvt. Jones, whom they call Joe-e-ness because they have never heard the name Jones. Pvt. Jones argues that his names is pronounced a different way, but gives up and goes to fetch Caboose, whom Miller reveals is tied up in the brig. Jones is apprehensive but eventually does what he is told. Moments later we hear a gun shot, and Caboose walks out of the base, saying that Jones has somehow shot himself. Washington tells Caboose he needs him to with him to command. Caboose freaks out and wants Washington to tell him who in his family has died. Washington replies that no one has died, at that moment one of the blues tells Miller that Jones has died, to which Washington restates wash the just said, saying “Ok, no one, besides him.” Washington explains to Caboose what is going on and tells him he has to go to command with him. Miller requests to talk to Caboose before they leave. Miller tells Caboose to “Never, ever, come back here again.” And makes Caboose promise to do so, Caboose promptly says “Don’t ever go backwards.” Miller sighs and lets him go with Washington.

Another good episode, very funny, Miller reminds me a bit of Sarge and Caboose is as always dumb and oblivious which is what makes him funny. Washington’s growing frustration with this mission is beginning to show a bit and that makes for a few funny moments on his part. There are no special effects like there were last episode, but there is a surprise at the end of the episode after the box credits, and box set ad. I wont spoilt so go watch it. This episode gets 10 Elite skulls out of 10

Heres the link to the episode, ya lazy bums.

Red v.s. Blue: Recon Episode 2 (Spoilers)

As Burnie promised in the post for episode 1, episode 2 was released yesterday. So they kept their promise of releasing on Monday. The episode was good, not great, but very good. They are building up to the story, so its understandable that the episodes are still not great. There were some lulzy moments thanks to two returning characters and Washington attitude towards them. As always though the photo shop and editting is well done and there is one particular scene that is awesomely edited.

Episode Recap: The narrator provides some detail about the conversations between the director of Project Freelancer and someone else. Washington approaches Blue Base to discover that only Sister is left, she offers little help as to information on where the others went and accuses Washington of being a cop. Dissatisfied with Sisters lack of information, Washington contacts command and informs them that he will approach Red Base. As he approaches Red Base however cardboard cut out pop outs of the Red Team warn him, in sarges voice trying to imitate his team members, no to come any further. (THIS IS THE AWESOMELY EDITED SCENE ->) The last cardboard pop out turns out to be Sarge himself faking being a cardboard pop out (which takes fucking skill). Washington then discovers that only Sarge and Lopez, who now has his body back, are left in Red Base Washington the asks where the rest of his team went and Sarge replies that they are all deserting cowards, especially Griff. Sarge reveals that he disobeyed orders from command to relocate with the rest of his team because Sarge will not leave till he defeats the blues. Washington suggests that Sarge is A-Wall to which Sarge is speechless. The episode ends with Sister shouting from the right side road leading to Red Base to Sarge not to say anything to "That cop." to which Washington sighs and the episode ends.

All in all the episode was very good and I rate it 9 Elite Skulls out of 10.

Red V.S. Blue. ITS BACK... with other RvB related news

Months ago I blogged about the state of affairs over at Rooster Teeth Productions, the guys behind Red v.s. Blue, The Strangerhood, P.A.N.I.C.S. I am pleased to state that (even if you already know) Red v.s Blue is now back on track with its new series Red v.s. Blue: Reconstrutcion.

Now this new series seems like it will have a bit more serious undertone, and more characters that you can shake a stick at. It is recommended that you watch the mini series Out of Mind and Recovery One in order to know a couple of things about some characters in the new series. "We plan to release RvB:re on Mondays all throughout the Summer, so please stay tuned." said Burnie. So mark your calendars and do absolutely NOTHING on Mondays till you watch RvB:Recon. Rejoice and enjoy friends.

In other Rooster Teeth News "We are also adding another regular feature to the site on Fridays -- Dev Day. Each week, Gus, Ben and Nathan will be bringing you new features to the community site." states Burnie about their new development feature. Their first Dev Day post was about The Goods Highlighting.

"As part of our new weekly Dev Day segment, we've rolled out a brand new feature to the site this morning. The Goods Highlighting. Now whenever you visit a user profile, your similar interests will light up in a bright color" said Ben in his Dev Day post.

In Rooster Teeth Store News, it is the last time for god knows how long that we will be able to get our hands on the original character t-shirts since RT is retiring them. So far Griff has been the only one retired but if you check in the store you can see that the shirts for Doc, Simmons, Tucker and Donut are all on the road to retirement. Also the box set of the original RvB is now for sale in all its awesomeness.

Death of D&D Co-creator causes me to reminisce.

Surfing the gaming sites I frequent today, yeilded a news post on GameRevolution about the death of D&D co-creator Gary Gygax.

After reading the story, I could not help but reminisce about the times when me and my friends sat around a table in one other friend's basement exploring dungeons, slaying mythical creatures, and having a lot of fun in the process. Those times were fun and so far in between that each time we got together to play D&D it was not something we just did, it turned into an event. Hour after hour ticked away as we played, leveling our characters, progressing through our story, rolling a whole lot of dice.

D&D is responsible for the modern RPG, all of the underlining of RPGs were practically first present in D&D, such as leveling, classes, and hit points. If it wasn't for D&D who know were the modern RPG would be now?

So I bid farewell to such a brilliant mind and thank him for his work.   read

I fail at cblogin'

So last night I was on the internets, minding my own business, reading a couple of cblogs, downloading some anime, not really doing anything productive. At the time i was not logged into DTOID, then a blog idea hit me, but as the chronic procrastinator that I am I put it off for later, as if the two mouse clicks that were necessary to log in were a task i could not accomplish easily. Anyway, as Necros knows this has happened a couple of times already, I have had an idea for what I think could be a very good cblog, put it off for a couple of hours or days, and when I finally decide to sit down and write it the idea to my disappointment is gone. I hate it, because I want to be a bigger part of the community and blog more than I have.

As a bonus for this completely unnecessary post, I bring you this epic song I found on youtube a few days ago. Pay no attention to the video, listen to the song and you will see why its so epic.
