Last night, I had a really great time playing a game. It was a true balls-to-the-wall adrenaline-pumping action kick. Using tight, precise controls I strafed around a corner, decapitated a baddy with my shotgun, dived behind cover, switched to my assault rifle and took down two assailants before ducking behind a wall to reload. At the same time, a huge monster was trashing above me, bringing down the city around my ears. It was fun, intense and I loved every second of it.
At the same time, this game gets almost universally negative reviews. They complain about the linearity, plot holes, and the lack of personality in the characters.
While reading these reviews, I can't help but think: "No shit, Sherlock."
They accuse this game of not being Bioshock, of not being Half-life 2. Again, I fail to be surprised. All they are doing, is lacking the right perspective.
For your reference: There's a movie called Deep Rising. It's about some fun but 2-dimentional characters who wind up on a cruiseship that's infested with huge man-eating tentacles. Do you need to know more? Of course not. This is a simple movie, a brainless "guys" movie. No intellectual effort is required, but there's a lot of entertainment to be found there. Just as long as you are not expecting to see The Godfather.
I like good writing as much as the next guy, or probably even more then the next guy, but once in a while I just like to play a fun dumb action game, just like I love to watch a fun stupid B-movie sometimes. Sure, the level design is linear, but that just means the next shootout is never far away. There's no stupid seesaw puzzle to be found, just straight-up killing with lots of cool enemies.
Legendary is the ultimate B-movie action game, and should be damn proud of it.
