My review of your review
Qraze | 11:06 PM on 12.12.2008 34 comments

I don't do reviews, i've never thought i should try to do one. I've never had that urge to try to rate or judge a game based on my experience of it. I've given props to games, i've given recomendations to buy a game but never have thought that i had the balls to tell you how i rate a game because i know most of you don't care what i think and i know it.

But as of late it seems we have alot of Eberts running around writing a review of a game we know is good without having to read a review for it. We have experts that write reviews and every Tom, Dick and Jane with or without an avatar thinks we should hear his rating. Let me stop you right here and just say stop it. We don't need twenty-one user reviews of gears2 or lbp. We know its good, we know and don't need your two cents to figure it out.

How about writng a review of something that no-one hasn't reviewed yet, like Age of Booty or something else obscure that we don't see every day. And another thing i don't like is a review of a game over two years old. We are all supposed to be the "hardcore" gamers here and we know that GoW2 or Super Mario World is a great game and don't need further motivation to play it or buy it. Once again, we know these things.

We all have our opinions on games but we also have editors who write better reviews and touch on more because they are professionals amd know how to critique something. We may not agree and may want to try the game anyway, we have our ways but when Jim Sterling says the new sonic game ain't the hedgehogs second coming, i take his word and don't disagree. I haven't played the game and can't argue with his reasoning. And we don't need a fucking Tomb Raider review, we all know the game sucks and is just trying to survive to make enough money for the company to break even. Quit buying the games and let her die, we need a new blood omen or even gex, not a tomb raider.

And those people who write reviews of the sacred games, the old school classics we know are great, have the common sense to realize this a gaming community, mainly filled with hardcore fanatics who have been there to play super mario world, streets of rage, final fantasy3 (6), chrono trigger, zelda, sonic and so many others that we know and don't need to be reminded of their awesomness. They are sacred and should and will remain that way without your two cents. You are only leading us to believe you just have now played them, which is good but a review isn't. Where i live people don't sing about moonshine, because some things are sacred to people. The old classics are our moonshine, we can talk about them, praise them, play them over and over, but not judge them, they have been judged and to do it again after they been under the knife for too many years is not a tribute to them, they have earned their lot fair and square.

This may be a failblog but its what i feel i must say about all these pointless reviews and the people who write them. You may not agree with me and that's fine, i said what i wanted to say that i think is on everybody's mind.

Nice. Just don't start sentences with buts and ands.

I would give you an 8 out of 10, even though I don't believe in scoring stuff with numbers anymore, so a B+ should do it.

I agree with the fact that people should stop writing reviews for the big tripple-A holiday games, and they should write reviews on the less known games. But I also don't see anything wrong with writing retro-reviews. Sometimes it is kind of fun to read someones take on a classic game, being compared to games that have come out since.

Also, Kirby! <(*o*<)

My review of your review of reviews.

Why should we want your two cents about reviewing reviews if you think reviewing something that has been reviewed alot shouldn't be reviewed. Since the Destructoid team is constantly reviewing their review system I think this blog is hypocritical, especially since you contradicted yourself in the first four words of this blog.

In fact how is it that I can get away reviewing a review of reviews? This is madness!

"but when Jim Sterling says the new sonic game ain't the hedgehogs second coming, i take his word and don't disagree."

People have a right to have their own opinion, they have the right to feel differently about a game then someone else. Some people will take his word, others will try and see for themselves. It's better to have multiple opinions coming from multiple personality's to see how the game stands up, rather then taking one persons word for it.

People can review whatever they want. So what? If you don't care, don't read it. Also, needs more fire trucks.

good point sir. I do find it funny when I see 3 reviews in the C blogs for a game that was just reviewed on the front page.

If you want to review those games and you feel you have something interesting to bring to the table, start your own thing.

Although we have a good amount of freedom here on the C blogs its only common sense that your post should still be somehow relevant to dtoid (meaning you should be aware of the main posts and not posting that they just confirmed the new 240 gig Wii hard drive 10 times the day after sterling already made some cynical almost funny but borderline offensive comments about it on the front page).

bottom line, use your brains children.

I'm not sure I completely agree with this. Just because I am paid to write reviews, it does not make me an "expert." I was hired for my ability to write, not my credentials as a gaming expert.

Destructoid editors are gamers, just like everyone else. We might know how to conform to a stylesheet a little better, and might be more experienced in writing for big audiences, but that doesn't make us any less infallible than a CBlogger.

I love reviewing, and I obviously wouldn't do it if I didn't believe my opinions were valid. However, that doesn't make me or any other reviewer infallible or "better" than another gamer.

I do agree that reviews of big titles rarely offer anything new. As you say, we all know what there is to be said about Gears 2. I would love to see more indie and obscure games reviewed (this is something I constantly think about for Destructoid's front page). But to invalidate the opinions of someone simply because they are not given money to rate a game is wrong, I feel.

You may agree with me on Sonic because our opinions generally sync up, that's fine. You should not agree with me simply because I have an arbitrary "reviews editor" title under my name.

Luff. <3

That should have been "more infallible."

well, Jim, i brought your review up becauase you are a fan of the hedgehog and your review of sonic was truthful and not biased. if a fan of a game don't like the new game i believe he knows what should be expected of that series. thats why i had referenced you in that way, not just because you are an editor but a fan. i do agree not everyones perfect and we all make mistakes.

the c-blogs are for everyone and everything, but when there is 20 reviews of the same game, i think its an issue that should be brought up and i did exactly that. i never said i din't want reviews, i love reading them and mostly i'll never play the game reviewed not because of the review but because i just don't have the money to spend on them.

to me someone who is a professional is someone who gets paid to do something and does it well. you can ride bulls forever but until you get paid to ride, you're not professional bull rider, you're just a bull rider. i'm not professional gamer, i'm a hardcore gamer. a professional gamer goes to money making tournaments and comes back with prizes. we in the c-blogs report on something due to the passion we have for games, that does not make us professionals.

I'm with Niero. 11 out of 10! Take note of this blog Pliskin. I don't want you to review anything anymore. Write a blog about an old game is something different but a review? That's bullshit.

John, an opinion is ones thoughts and speculation about something. a review is a judgement of something. a big differance in my "opinion. if i write my opinion of any game, it won't have a rating at the end.

Reviews are based on opinions. That's why one person might give a game a 9, and another give it a four. It's the individual's subjective judgement. Not sure how you can consider that a big difference.

an opinion is an ever changing thought, while a review is more or less set in stone, you can change your mind about a game but will that change your review of it?

A review reflects your opinion at the time of writing. Yes, hypothetically I can write a review then go back and revise my opinion of the game later. Most professional reviewers are unlikely to do that, since their job is to form a complete impression of a title before they write the review. However, there are rare cases when people go back and re-review games if significant changes has been made. Some examples would be if the review copy lacked a significant feature that was available in the full release, or ever-evolving titles like MMOs. Whether or not someone's mind changes later doesn't mean their review wasn't an opinion at that certain point in time.

i agree. mmo's, patches and expansions do merit a re-reviewing if something in fact changed the game.
